Thanks for posting this article, Adam. I just got back from a week in Duck and actually read Shadow Divers while there. Wish I would've read this post before I left! We go to Duck every summer and last year I started a tradition of reading books about the Sea while I'm there. Last year I read The Perfect Storm and The Hungry Ocean.

Nice article, Rose! My Mom is from Germany and I have an aunt who lives in Bremerhaven on the North Sea. I haven't gone swimming in the North Sea since I was a kid when we'd visit during summer vacation. I usually go in the fall or spring these days, so its too cold for swimming. Germany is much more diverse than most people imagine--its not all mountains and lederhosen. Thanks for sharing.

Hey--I grew up in bars and so far so good! :) Just about all of my great uncles owned bars. I loved freaking my friends out and taking them in the bar for trick-or-treating. All of the old guys would give us a dollar. Sadly, at least one girl was told she couldn't play with me anymore. What a cute kid!

My first car was a dark brown 2-door 1972 Ford Maverick that I shared with my Mom in the mid-1980s. She drove it to work and I got to use it in the evenings. I was one of two teenagers in my group back then who had regular access to a car. The first car that I purchased was a dark red 4-door 1985 Ford Escort. I bought it brand new during my first year in the Marines and totaled it within 6 months. Since then I've never bought a brand new car.

I think an understanding of history and how it has shaped our present is crucial. I first got into history as a 6th grader studying the Egyptians (which was presented in such a way as to make Egyptian history completely irrelevant to today. History=dead people). It wasn't until grad school, though, when I started studying womens' history that I came to see that we're still very much"living out" history. I believe that change for the better happens much faster when we make an attempt to understand why things are the way they are and understand that many ways of being are not "natural" or "just the way things are." Can't wait to check out your new work!

A lot of folks credit Cornwell as being the one who triggered the CSI craze. It seems to me like she single handedly created the genre. I love her early books, but the cruelty of her later novels are hard for me to read. Cornwell says she writes that way so as not to trivialize the horror of the crimes she writes about. Postmortem, her first, was the only book so far to win all of the international crime awards. She has a new novel coming out in May, however its not a Scarpetta novel. Glad to hear you liked Blow Fly, Maria!
