i think in a world muddled with political inconsistencies, when our president - the one real human being in this world that we should for all intents and purposes be able to look up to - is caught in a web of either lies, stupidity, or both...it might be comforting to give yourself up to fantasy for two hours of one day. to say, you know what, i am going to escape for a little bit - not irresponsibly so, but just to indulge myself. i want to see a superhuman character. i want to believe, if only for a little while, in myth and legend. i think the political and cultural context in which we find ourselves right now is enough reason to justify a little harmless fantasy and escapism.

bruce, you say "This absurd depiction of men doing huge deeds that would be impossible is almost such teenage fantasy, and it is the only thing out there anymore."

i would argue that that is the essence of the western. what else is a hero if not someone who can acheive the impossible. perhaps you might look at why it is that audience connect with these characters?

Thank you all for the comments! Anne, you are right about Hitchcock appearing in all of his movies and certainly not all of his characters are exactly the same, but to me, the interesting thing is how he used the actors, and how there are similarities in theme and character throughout his movies. This is one reason he's considered a great auteur - you watch his movies and you know they're his. They couldn't be made by anyone else.

Paul, I would disagree. I really liked Die Hard, but Bourne has the edge by far. I think the fact that the movie, rather than "save the world" is one man's personal quest to find his identity makes it thematically much stronger.

SO good.

Ohhh I want to go to Spain so badly. I've been to Portugal and France, but I feel like I can't say I've really been to Europe until I've been to Spain and Italy. I'm so jealous!!

p.s. Have you ever, by chance, been to Belize? I am going in a month, planning my trip now!

Stephen, are you really arguing that it is better for a 15 year old to see gory, bloody fighting and people killing and maiming eachother, than *gasp* a gay couple?! Really?! I don't even think it's an issue of homosexuality or homophobia, I think this comes down to the fact that anyone could think that someone loving another person is more harmful than someone killing another person. That is unthinkable to me!!

Personally, Casablanca is my number one - though as a film student, I recognize the importance of Citizen Kane. In terms of narrative though, I think Casablanca is the best. I think Godfather may have moved up because of its cultural prominence now - it seems I hear at least one Godfather quote a day.

I loved this movie. I have a feeling it might be my favorite of the year (and yes, I do know we haven't even gotten to Oscar season yet!)
