I've been meaning to get this book and will do.

On a side note, Tuedays with Morrie is still one of my very favorite books and I recommend it all of the time.

I was just in your beautiful country for three weeks in December and enjoyed every moment. I have a long list of favorite places in New Zealand which include the Bay of Islands, Queenstown and Raglan. I wish we would have had more time as I would have enjoyed going even farther north to the Kari Kari peninsula. Oh, let's not forget beautiful and ever so quaint Russell. It was just perfect!

Every little nook, cranny and waterfall was far more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. We'll be back again. Thanks for this great article, Pat.

Maui..When I lived on the island I was able to fill my days with nature and adventure. When we visit now as a family, it's even better because I can share it with others. I couldn't live there now though because there are too many other places I want to explore. Still, the memories live on....

I think you have just explained something that I could never find the words to explain. If I didn't have writing to blame all of this on, where would I be? Probably alone because no one would have patience to tolerate my constant escapes away from conversations in order to jot down notes for the next chapter, book or article. This was great Katherine.

I'd second everyone above who has said they learned a lot about writing through reading. My interest in writing didn't appear until my college years although my vivid imagination was always readily available. I also think just the practice of writing for so many years even through the rejections and turmoil that we face in life has allowed my writing to improve. I think it's true that when you write what you know, it comes through with more clarity and presence of voice. So in summation, I'm self taught by all of the great authors of past and present.

NZ is very pristine and still very untouched. It's a beautiful place that I would recommend anyone go and visit. Wish I was there again right now...

My daughter is also eight and can read faster than I can. She started hating reading last year because she was told to read the same stories 4 times in a row to improve on her speed and fluency (due to state standards). That was in 1st grade and she was already at the top of the class. Still the pressure wore her down but we continued to read with her and also allowed her to stretch her wings with the reading of non-fiction books on Egypt and books for older readers (The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe, etc). This year has been different, lacking much of the pressure she had last year, and she often chooses to use money from birthdays, holidays etc to buy herself books. I'm very happy about that because I truly believe she will be a lover of the written word. After all, she knows if I'm not reading, I'm writing something to be read. Ha.

My son is a great reader but I don't see him reading things like Captain Underpants or some of the other books available to 6 six-year-old boys these days. I read The Cay to him last year and he absolutely loved that book. He's never been into tv unless he's watching Animal Planet, Discovery Channel or The History Channel. I think it'll be tougher to keep his interest in reading but he knows that we love to read. I think it's an important example to set. As Donna said above, turn off the tv, turn on some low music, and read.

I didn't enter the contest for travel photos although I know some others who did. Photography is something I just enjoy. I have so many pictures that it's probably ridiculous. Writing is something I have to do. Maybe I'm addicted because when I'm not writing, I'm not fun to be around. lol
