Wow! Thanks everyone for the amazing stories. This is one of the most interesting threads I've ever seen on here! I once drove a "stolen" golf cart around New Haven all night while drunk. It was fun.

I'm not quite sure. I've started doing freelance writing, which pays some bills. I also have a day job, teaching for Manhattan GMAT. Then I write 500 words of fiction almost every day, and work on music. I also review books now (I reviewed "Elegance of the Hedgehog" for Public Radio International, the book you mention on your page: You can read my review at www.tommywallach.com)

To finish, Stefanie, I think what's most likely is that the Decca thing won't pan out in terms of a full deal, but it will put me in a much better position to get a deal with a smaller label, that has less of an expectation in terms of sales, and has a bit more time and resources to devote to somebody small, like little old me.

Hey Stefanie,

Well, I'd like it to, but I don't think the odds are very good. Decca has done a lot of wonderful things for me, and I'm forever grateful, but they've decided not to go to bat in terms of marketing, yet they expect me to have quite serious sales (tens of thousands of copies). In this marketplace, without some serious luck, that simply isn't possible. I've signed a contract for 3 CDs, but Decca won't exercise the option to make them unless the EP makes some money. It's a complicated universe. For example, I don't get any money at all until I've sold about 100,000 EPs. I'm not in this for money, so that doesn't bother me, but it's still strange. : )

I'm generally more structured than that, but that comes with time. I do think that's great for people just starting out. As for what I'm working on now, there's always a dozen songs somewhere along the line. I've been listening to a lot of Thom Yorke, and he makes me very jealous. If I could write like that, I would.

For the people who've asked about shows and tours, I'm in grad school right now (Journalism at Stanford), so it's hard to find time. Also, I just don't have the audience yet to make it happen. Apparently, there's a website called iLike, where people in different cities can write if they want someone to show up. Perhaps you could mark me there? If there's ever a big enough audience, I'll come!

I do generally write my own lyrics, but if you're implying would I write music to someone else's, I'd absolutely give it a try. I'd have to like the lyrics though... (I like your Emily picture)

As for writing advice, as I just said above, the best way is to force yourself to a word limit every day. I don't even believe in a time limit, because that allows you to get nothing down on the page. 500 words is sorta the standard. It's not very much (about a page and a half in a paperback), but in six months, you'd have 90,000 words, which is a medium sized book!

Hey Jennifer,

Writer's block? A little bit, but not too bad. I write 500 words a day of fiction, and I don't believe in writer's block. I truly think it's an excuse not to try. That being said, whereas I'm mostly perspiration on the fiction front, I tend more towards inspiration on the music front. In other words, I don't sit down every day to write music (I sit down every day to play, but that's different). I really only write a song when an idea for music or lyrics comes to me. So in some ways, I do have writer's block, because I can't just sit down and do it. Phew!
