Thanks for reminding us.

It's so tempting to simplify this subject: Wall went up; wall fell; all is ok. It's much more difficult than that, as you know. I spent eight years in Berlin, between the ages of 4 and 12. My mother is a native Berliner, and her side of the family still lives there. What I think surprised them -- and most natives of the city -- was the messy reality of a unified East and West. Reunited families discovered they had little in common; economic resentments ran high; capitalist and communist notions of productivity had created an irreparable rift.

The unintended consequences are still there: T-Shirts proclaim that some want the wall back. Graffiti advises "Ossies go home!" And the economic disparity continues. East Berliners are an "other" on par with the much-maligned Turkish population.

Every Michael Moore film I've ever seen has changed me -- if only slightly.

Sicko is the most humane, the least pedantic of all of his films. Just as Holly and Kay say above, it's a movie about people. I loved it.

I, too, think the analysis is brilliant. Especially, it is bold and confronts issues that I do believe are being masked in the name of PC.

I'm particularly interested in your notion of finding a new language to discuss racial differences, as you mention at the end of your post:

"While we on the panel mostly talked about the effort to find a new language to discuss racial differences in medicine..."

Is the search for a new langague for dialogue isolated to the medical realm, or is this an ongoing theme?

Do forgive me if this is an issue you discuss in your book; I confess that I have not yet read it.

John, I must say that there have been three of your postings that have had an almost dizzying effect on me--challenged my way of seeing (not that I'm committed to it). This is one of them. And thank you; this, after all, is what I'm ultimately looking for when I'm spending time on Gather.

Although I tend to believe in anything T-Bone Burnett has a hand in, I admit I, too, was skeptical. But I love it! Both Allison and Plant find the perfect balance between deference to one another and freedom to expand and explore within a new medium. This is the element of surprise that we all look for in great music and writing.
