You're absolutely correct - and I predict it will get worse instead of better.
The motivation is greed and until we turn our (collective) mind towards something more important (like people), our country will continue in the spiral it is in now both morally and stability wise.

This speaks to everyone who has a chronic illness or pain - that nether world between breaths you visit that are totally without pain - few and far between - where you are able to see straight into the heart of humanity, sigh, breathe again and find a feeling of complete harmony with the universe.
Thank you for illustrating that for those who stand at our side.

I would have to say two ....The Cinderella with Leslie Ann Downs as Cinderella and The wizard of Oz. Not only did they play a huge part in my childhood, but in the childhood of my children.
When I was young, they aired Oz and Cinderella at the same times every year and it meant that for that evening, we would all be nestled down in front of the t.v. with carmeled popcorn and fresh apple slices. The Wizard of Oz used to scare me to death! Cinderella followed the same scenerio. I loved it somuch, I began the same tradition with my children. My husbandand I would make carmeled corn, slice the apples and open up the sleeper sofa - all of us would pile onboard and munch away! Things got interesting once we had all six children - mom and dad had tomove to chairs! We have a wonderful time. I miss doing this so much that when they stopped airing them dependebly (Like the used to), we purchased copies of the movies and established our ownmovie nights! I cherish all of those memories!

Yes, Donna, I agree - if this young man did indeed suffer for so long with depression, etc., it would have been irresponsible of the parents to just let it go on without any actiion on their part. The problem is this: We don't have enough information to know that is what happened.
Cho could have gone through extensive counseling while in high school and the parents and professionals thought he was good to go out on his own, when something else triggered his extreme actions.
On the other hand, some trauma may have befallen him while at school that he was too good at hiding...until the day he exploded in a violent rampage.
It is probably the easiest and most often thought - the one makes us look at disgust toward the family that could have produced this "monster" and blithly released him on society - but here again, we do not have the information to make that judgement.
If indeed the popular train of thought is just as many assume it is,my question is still valid: what of the family?
Is this THE incident that will bring them to God? Do they go on about their daily actions, without guilt or remorse, blaming his actions on something or someone else? There are far too many scenerios for us to know the truth.
Not knowing, not understanding - and even if we did know or understand and not like what we saw, they too are worthy of our prayers and compassion - even in the midst of extreme grief.

Standardized testing has to be the 'junk mail' of testing...it is the lazy way out to try and survey something complex - the students taking these standardized tests are still unable to write a decent letter or to sound educated when they speak. When will we stop ignoring the fact that standardized testing is not only helping inferior learning practices to take place, but bringing down the entire educational system in the states?
Standardized testing is a horse-cart in the world of jets. Please, please, retire already!

Krissy- I remember those days of being at a ballpark with diamonds for different ages in play all around us, from T-Ball to High School leagues - and our 6 children scattered between all of them with an older child or two in a travel league...we did alot of sprinting between diamonds, hauling buckets and buckets of cool drinks and snacks..rushing to catch the last few or the beginning innings of the traveling league...exhausting! It was so much fun, the memory makes me feel like tearing up!
On the bright side, this all occurred in my youth...so I just have to show up at the grandkids games in a few years looking matronly and a special treat tucked in my pocket for MY team star!

There is no doubt that it is a hard decision. My very own cousin had 2-sisters in her home for more than 4 years. One of the children were just born when she took them in - just at the point of adoption, the birth mother changed her mind. It was so heart wrenching, she could never try to adopt again. It is such a shame, her home would have been a wonderful home for a child.
Perhaps the 'safest' way to go in that respect is to adopt a child out of the foster system -many of these children have parents who's parental rights have been terminated. There are some young infants in foster care as well. The only cost you bear is the one to change their name upon adoption. (About $90 where I live).
If the child has something that might need continuing medical follow-up, you receive money monthly to help with those costs until the child is 18.
Even though none of us would adopt a child for the money, it does help if you are middle class and doing this from the heart!
I do think Jen had a very valid point too, we do know the children in America have enough to eat that are 'in the system.' Frankly, I had never thought about that. I am sure, however, that foreign adoption would be out of reach for us due to the cost. On top ofthe adoption costs, some of the countries you have to literally 'pay bribes' to complete the adoption because it is expected.
Such a sad situation - having people who would make wonderful parents, seperated by money or fear from children they could love.
If only we could do something to change both systems!

It is not worthless to bear burdens - it is part of our growing experience - but all is in God's hands and what IS for naught is more aptly put - is our continuous worrying about those trials and tribulations. We must be able to lay our burdens at the cross - turn them over to our Lord.

Seventh grade?Who in the world was thinking about sex in the 7th grade? I guess I matured rather slowly!
Of course...once it was experienced (at a ripe old age, I assure you)...well....it has continued to fill my thoughts - much to my husband's delight!

Nancy -
No one wants to see children (or parents) behaving badly during sporting events, but if a ban on booing is instituted (and like I said in my article, I DO NOT believe people should boo at sporting events or performances), it is an infringment on our right to freedom of speech.
We cannot legislate behavior. It is crazy to think we can....and when doing so infringes on our rights, it is a dangerous precedent to set.
Not only are there rules regarding behavior on the field, there are field rules for the behavior of spectators. When spectators get rowdy in public, the police can be called....all without a ban on booing!
Isn't this a better solution than LEGISLATING a ban on freedom of speech?
