There may be only 20 million Americans who hold right wing views, but it doesn't take much to turn a country into a nightmare image of itself.

We must constantly defend liberal democracy from the forces of conservative fascism that lurk not only in politics, but religion and society as well.

November, I sure do remember the consternation over Halliburton duering the last Administration, but in that case the company had a direct link to the Vice President who was a former chairman. There's more than a little difference in the government rescuing a company and a company having direct influence at the highest levels of government.

As for picking winners and losers, that happens in the marketplace; at least the government can, when properly administered, make rational decisions about who wins or loses.

Col. George, American corporations are at or near the bottom in terms of taxes and regulation among all Western and developed countries. It's lack of taxation and regulation that's lead to the greatest income disparity in the US since 1929.

Jason, not all Jews are hard-core liberals. I used to work at a Jewish community center and there were a couple of very conservative congregations at the facility. One of them, Congregation Kol Halev, used a curtain to separate the mens' and womens' side of the worship area. As I understand that sect's practices, it's the men who worship while women sit in silence, "absorbing" the benefits of being in the "Presence" of Ha Shem (God).

The only time military Keynesianism works is when there's a shortage of military goods. Otherwise, there's no impetus for industry to ramp up production and boost the economy with jobs and in-demand products. We saw how military Keynesianism failed in the Gulf War: the US had and continues to have a surplus of military goods, so going to war didn't boost the economy then nor this decade in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

Georgiana, the fundamentalist mindset, if you can call it that, allows for no variance from accepted principles, unless you're one of the chosen, and then any transgression can be forgiven as a mistake. The "thought" process in fundamentalism are very contradictory: you're expected to believe one thing even though your experience shows you otherwise. Often, this leads to a mental gymnastics usually kept in check with frequent worship events and gatherings to reinforce beliefs.

I'm all for a multilateral approach to south Asia questions and issues. Mnay of the nations, especially former Soviet republics aren't in a position to do much, but shouldn't be written off either.

Tensions between India and Pakistan are a major roadblock to cooperation, but I'm sure it can be acheived with due diligence on our part.

Generally, I agree with you.

I do, however, see a strong reason for us to remain in the AfPak region: to leave opens up a power vacuum that would endanger us in the not-too-distant future.

I'm ecstatic that President Obama is taking time to formulate policies that will serve our troops and country well.

Withdrawing from Afghanistan has some very awful policiy implecations for us: it destabilizes nuclear Pakistan and provides a shelter for a potentially resurgent al Qaida and Taleban. Neturally, the two groups won't always see eye to eye, but to call either country, Afghanistan or Pakistan, a nation is stretching things a wee bit too far.

If we continue in Afghanistan long enough for Pakistan to defeat the Taleban and al Qaida forces there, we'll be in much better shape geo-politically and in terms of national security. Our presence will also help Afghanistan sort through enough of its problems to be more or less self-sufficient.

We also have troops positioned globally to react to anything there or elsewhere within 24 hours.
