It's great that several of you grew up eating pomegranates--I remember having them once at my grandmother's house when I was young, but I didn't really acquire a taste for them until I was older.

I'm so envious of those of you with pomegranate trees! When I was researching this article, I learned that they are among the longest-lived trees in the world--they can live for centuries!

You're so right--for me, the slow roasting time of acorn and other squashes is the perfect accompaniment for the long-simmering soups and other slower-cooking dishes I turn to at this time of year!

I just got 5 eggplants at my CSA today--I'm so excited to try some of these suggestions! Laura, I make homemade pizza all the time, and will definitely try your method for using eggplant as a topping. And Pamela, I'll be on the lookout for your eggplant recipe--sounds like a must-try!

Thanks for that tip--yes, any plum dessert can be made tarter by simply omitting the sugar. I do like the crust of sugary juices that forms on top of this tart, though!

It is very satisfying to see the same folks at the market each week. I know some people who go out of their way to enhance this social experience, arranging to meet friends at the market, etc. Once school starts back up in a couple weeks, a few local elementary schools also take outings to the market, which I think is a great idea, too.

There's an apple/fruit vendor at my market who is so nice about letting people try all those different varieties that might be unfamiliar. Thank goodness these local markets and orchards are keeping some of those delicious, lesser-known, more fragile varieties alive!
