With all due respect, you've not told the full story here. Kennedy wasn't the hero he was made out to be by the media. We learned later that a secret compromise was made with the USSR for us to also remove our missiles from Turkey and Kennedy signed an agreement not to invade Cuba thereby strengthening Castro's hand in solidifying his communist regime. In fact, some U.S. military leaders felt Khrushchev may have provoked the showdown just to accomplish those two things and that Kennedy was suckered. From Wikipedia:
After much deliberation between the Soviet Union and Kennedy's cabinet, Kennedy agreed to remove all missiles set in Turkey on the border of the Soviet Union in exchange for Khrushchev removing all missiles in Cuba...The practical effect of this Kennedy-Khrushchev Pact was that it effectively strengthened Castro's position in Cuba in that he would not be invaded by the United States. Communism would survive in the Caribbean Island. It is possible that Khrushchev only placed the missiles in Cuba to get Kennedy to remove the missiles from Turkey and that the Soviets had no intention of resorting to nuclear war when they were out-gunned by the Americans.

So, history is never as clear-cut as we'd like. But thanks for an informative piece on a vital time for our nation.

You're right about hospitals. I too have memories over a lifetime of friendships formed in hospitals both when I was a patient and when loved ones were ill. And my wife was formerly a nurse! Well written.

Well done, Ed. The most successful poems do have meaning, I always insist, but not the meaning of the rhetorical argument but rather the meaning of surprising discovery, for both the poet and the reader.

Having followed the confirmation hearings at the time, seen the recent 60 Minutes interview and heard Rush Limbaugh interview Thomas for over an hour on radio, I feel your review here seems right on point and an excellent addition to the writings on the topic. The treatment Thomas has received at many stages of his life and certainly by the left and media following his nomination to the court are the epitome of bias and brutality. I admire his aplomb. And your ability to convey it in your review. Thanks.

We have a cat named Missy that has GOT TO BE a cousin of Mao and who at this very minute is pestering me by meowing and licking my leg and rubbing against my foot and will be jumping onto computer next. Wants fresh food, I'm guessing. Just came into house a few minutes ago. Very proud of herself this morning as she killed a rabbit in garden, so thinks she should get a special treat! ;-) Cats!!!!!!

Your concerns are well founded here, Sunnye. In fact, the media is MISINFORMING the public on much of the war and what the long-term consequences might be. Opinions aren't worth much if they aren't based on facts. Certainly they can't properly run a war! Thanks.

This was a fascinating review and interview for me personally to read for several reasons. My wife is Catholic and from the Philippines and the spiritual beauty of sun and shore and sea comes through and calls up deep images for me that resonate with emotion. Then, too, I'm in the process of writing my own memoir and feeling the surges of joy and harsh pain of uncovering long-buried memories. You certainly have that right! Finally, being a lover of language, I relished the way you both employed the written word. Kudos to you both, Beryl and Aaron! And best of luck with your next book projects.
