i live in philadelphia where last year over 400 people were murdered. most of them were young
-one little boy was seven-and most of them black. almost all of them were killed with guns that were purchased on street corners and out behind the 7-11.
now, i know that we're never going to change the laws that make it so easy for any kid, criminal or crazy person to get a gun. but i sure as hell would like to change the culture that makes it cool to have a pistol, flash it around and to someday use it on another person. i wrote a novel called bang BANG about a young woman who sets out to change the culture.
her name is paula sherman and she has some really bold ideas. one of them is that if all the women in the country decided that they wouldn't sleep with men who had handguns and the men had to decide which kind of bang bang they preferred......
but my song wouldn't be 'paula's song' although that would be a lot of fun. my song would be a song by a guy who falls in love with his gun. he'd sing all the love song tropes, he wouldn't care that his nra membership was making a few lawyers rich, he'd love her (him?) anyway.
now that you got me started: maybe my song would be from a mother who just buried her kid. she could thank all those rich folks in the suburbs who protected the right to keep and bear and she wonders if they'd like to keep and bear the grief that she'll have for the rest of her life.
i'd love to hear your voice wrapped around the idea that we've got to back away from the guns.
thanks for asking,
lynn hoffman, author of bang BANG
