What's ludicrous? Where to start? Shall we start at the beginning?

When Bush Jr. was installed in office in 2001, he had an economy that was very healthy. In fact, it was running a surplus. After 8 years--6 of which included his party controlling the House and Senate--we have an economy that is in the dumpster. Who's to blame for this mess?

According to you and Kay's cat, it's President Obama who has been in office less than two weeks. That isn't ludicrous, it's insane.

We can also pick apart such specious claims that poor people don't pay taxes. Everyone pays taxes, Ron, unless they live out in the woods in a hole in the ground and never interact with civilization.

When you and Kay's cat complain about the NEA being funded, you aren't talking about TARP. You're talking about earmarks. Here is a pie chart that depicts earmarks in relation to the federal budget (http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2008/09/john-mccains-bi.html). Even so, such earmarks do have a stimulus effect on the economy.

Dan G: There have been plenty of MDs who were crackpots and bigots. Joseph Mengele? Wm Shockley won a Nobel Prize for Physics, yet it didn't prevent him from being an advocate of eugenics. So, educational achievements doesn't necessarily bar someone from crackpot bigotry.

As for winning 10 terms in Congress: Texas.

Again, the fact is very plain: for nearly two decades, racist rantings appeared in publications bearing Ron Paul's name. If we assume the best--that Paul didn't author or condone the writings--it still demonstrates Paul is at best an incompetent idiot.

Really then how is it that there are people registered to vote in two different states when you're only suppose to register in one state at a time?

Being registered in multiple locales or states is not against the law. If it were, there'd be a lot of military folks and snowbirds who would be in trouble. What is against the law is the same person voting twice or in mutiple locales.

But again, there is no proof this is a problem.

I have to present IDs to do all sorts of things that are far, far less important than voting.

So? You signed up for whatever it is that requires you to show ID. Again, there is no evidence that fraud is occuring.

It's really quite simple. When you place onerous requirements on people--certain people--in order to vote, you are disenfranchising them. This is what the segregationists did in the Jim Crow-era with poll taxes and literacy tests.

Again, you really fail to address the central issue: given the fact (and it's a hard fact) that voter impersonation or ineligible voting is virtually non-existent--what is the true purpose of legislation that could adversely affect between 10 and 20M US voters?

Most art, music included, is about provoking certain emotions. If you're looking for pure escapism, you may as well listen to the music of the Carpenters on Muzak.

Rock and roll, as you correctly note, is about rebellion. It also is the offspring of a number of genres (folk, blues, jazz, gospel, etc.) which were heavily tinged with political messages. If you've ever listened to Woody Guthrie or Billie Holliday or even some of the very old bluegrass music--you're more than likely hearing a protest or political song.

Tjhe problem that's ignored here is the problem doesn't exist. As I noted, there have been exactly zero cases prosecuted in Indiana where someone tried to vote who was either ineligible or in place of another voter.

Zero.

People do need to grow up and recognize that if the GOP is trying to pass a law to address non-existent crimes---perhaps the law isn't being passed for the purpose of preventing crime. This is yet another case where the GOP is trying to disenfranchise poorer voters. It's really no different than the poll taxes used in the South during the Jim Crow-era.

The dishonesty of Rob Port is indeed amazing.

The idea that the simple act of obtaining a state-issued ID in order to vote, something that is totally free for those that can't afford it, is an insurmountable obstacle that a significant number of citizens can't overcome is just plain ridiculous.

Either Port has not read the Indiana legislation or he is being willfully dishonest. While the ID is free---the means to obtain it may well not be. For example, if one doesn't have a driver's license or passport or other Government-issued ID--one has to produce a certified copy of one's birth certificate. In most states, a certified copy of a birth certificate will cost you $50 or more. Additionally, in order to obtain a certified birth certificate, one must physically go to the county clerk's office--which may be hundreds of miles away.

Perhaps the most glaring aspect of Port's dishonesty is the omission of how often voter fraud occurs. In Indiana, there has been exactly zero cases of voter fraud prosecuted in cases where someone who is ineligible to vote has voted.

COL W's remarks are simply ignorant and illustrate why the GOP finds themselves in this mess. He trots out the "tax and spend" chestnut, for example. Let's say--for a moment--the charge is true (it's not); Dems tax and spend. Isn't taxing and spending a much more honest to go about it than the GOP way of 'Borrow and Spend?'

It also is telling that COL W. would support a known racist like Ron Paul.

Petreus is generally reguarded as the biggest expert on counterinsurgency in the world. He litterally wrote the book on the subject.

Actually, no. Petraeus is considered an expert but he doesn't hold a candle to Galula or Nagl or Kilcullen. In reality, Petraeus is more a student of these folks than an expert.

Interestingly, Petraeus is an author of the Army Field Manual on Counterinsurgency. In this field manual, Petraeus notes it would take a surge of 200-250,000 troops in Iraq to get things under control. Yet, he has a surge of 30,000.

The good news about the report is that nothing's really going worse, but several things are getting better, some significantly better.

This is a whopper.

Petraeus and Crocker admit there's been no progress on the political front in Iraq. Without that, there can be no lasting security in Iraq. IOW, we would have to stay there for decades fighting a low grade civil war. Second, on the military front, Petraeus boasts about significant progress against Al Qaeda in Iraq. Unfortunately, Al Qaeda in Iraq comprises between 2 and 5% of the insurgency.

We also know that Iraqi casualties have not diminished and as Paul G. notes many Iraqis are fleeing the country. And the folks that are fleeing are the business owners and professionals--making the long term goal of a stable Iraqi society very remote.

Not necessarily; what it does show is that Freddie is more motivated by money than principle.
