Thanks for your comments, Webbie. This is an issue that has troubled me for a long time. I feel that most people are either hypocritical about this or, as I said in the article, they have not thought it through. But critical thinking is not something that most people employ when it comes to religious issues.

You are right about the need for tolerance, Jerry, but I don't see much progress. The anti-gay-marriage vote in Maine yesterday shows that the majority of people are still influenced by religious dogma. Leave out religion, and it would be hard for ANYONE to find a reason to oppose marriage between any two people.

The whole Republican shtik is based on myth...the biggest one being that if you cut taxes for the rich business owners, they will make SO MUCH MONEY that they will voluntarily let it "trickle down" to the working folks, and then EVERYBODY will be rich! Meanwhile, since it takes money to run government, you will have to sneak some tax increases in for those working folks, but they will be so GRATEFUL to their obscenely rich bosses that they won't mind. And anyway, if you can't raise taxes, just run deficits and let somebody worry about it in the future.

I have quite a different view of the "Gipper." He was governor of my state, California, before he became President. He did the same thing here that he did as President, so I knew what was coming long before he ran those huge deficits, all the while complaining about "big government." I knew, because you see, he did EXACTLY THE SAME DAMN THING IN CALIFORNIA!
I guess that was when I first realized that you needed to pay attention NOT to what a politician SAYS...but what he DOES.

A fine, rambling essay with lots of provocative ideas, Dick.
I will only comment on the last. You didn't quite suggest this, but is it possible that the establishment of a good health care system might make us healthier just because it is there? I think it's true that Americans live a more frenetic lifestyle than, say, Europeans.
The thought of getting sick and losing a job when you are financially overextended is scary. Could worrying about it make you sick?
Sort of like a self-eating watermelon...

I think the kingmakers of the Republican Party are too smart to run Huckabee. They know that a lot of moderate Republicans would be uncomfortable with him...and I doubt if he would get a single Democratic vote.
They will look for someone who can "sugar coat" their agenda. Like Romney.

That would probably be my choice too. South Africa is really nice...good climate, beautiful country...they are having some economic problems though.
New Zealand has the advantage of being much less dependent economically on the import/export interrelated economies of most northern hemisphere countries.

We don't have the perspective of history yet to show the extent of the damage to our nation caused by these three people. In the case of Cheney, it's tough to figure out whether to blame his puppet President, or the person pulling the strings.
I think history will show that Cheney has caused more damage to our nation than either of the other two that you mention.

Yeah, you're right, Gary. In some areas, they have gained power. I was thinking nationally...like President Huckabee. That would be really scary. I have actually thought about what I would do if the Religious Right gets control of our government and turns the nation into a theocracy.
Where would I go?
My list has two names so far...South Africa and New Zealand.
