My opinion on this is that the the Church will do what it wants to do, and if it chooses not to do adoptions anymore because the particular religion that it represents does not approve of the lifestyles of some potential adoptive parents, so be it. The Catholic Church has a specific set of beliefs and practises that define it as a religious institution, just like all the other religions out there competing for your attention, and it is applying those beliefs to a particular situtation. There are other places to go and adopt kids, just like there are other religions to look into if the one that someone believes in happens not to suit them anymore. Personally, the more I read articles about the conduct of various Christian churches, the more I am glad to not be Christian:-)

One of the reasons that I took up knitting with such gusto is that I wanted to change my life. Now I'm teaching myself crocheting, and I want to relearn sewing. My mother in law has sent me her antique needles and favorite hand-written patterns. Not to be outdone in the motherly race, my mother is getting her sewing machine ready for me to pick up this summer when we make a family trip to visit:-) It doesn't seem like I've done much, but it keeps me away from the telly and I've spent far less time in front of the computer. Instead of being online every day for a few hours, I'm online every few days for an hour at most.

I think you're doing a great thing for yourself. Especially the books. Reading is always wonderful and bookcrossing.com is an excellent way to send happy vibes out to the Universe:-D

I have a husband who glares at me incessantly while I am here reading for "just five more minutes" and it usually does the trick, since I can't stand to have someone reading over my shoulder:-)

That sounds like something I'll have to hunt for over the Boxing Day Sales here. RYC: I am trying to teach myself to crochet but I'm finding it really difficult. My mother might come to visit over the holidays and if she does, I plan on cornering her and getting her to show me.

I do the exact same thing when Dave says he's just stepping out for milk and it's an hour later. In my head I know that he'll return with a full card of photos that he just had to stop and take, but that doesn't stop me from mentally rehearsing my phone call to his mother.

Years ago I used to have a sign in my apt that said "Don't park your broom up your arse!!" Every now and then I remind myself of that sentiment if I find that I'm getting persnickety:-)
