Yes, there is nothing surprising about individuals in positions of power being abusive and in many cases committing criminal acts. The aim of my writing and related activities is not to repeat this common knowledge, but to identify particular corrupt and criminal individuals. I am also working on means by which ordinary citizens can take effective actions in exposing and at least curtailing and maybe eliminating such corruption and crime when the so-called legal authorities refuse to take action in the face of undeniable evidence. This memo you commented on is but one instrument for this. In my case, the so-called legal authorities, including the judge William Rush written about in the above memo, worked with the criminal attorneys at the Pullman and Comley law firm to cover up the theft of the thousands of dollars of my medical films by false statement, perjury, evidence tampering, forgery, and witness intimidation. My book on this which I have titled HOW A $6,000 THEFT LED TO THE EXPOSURE OF CRIME AND CORRUPTION IN THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY LEGAL SYSTEM is completed. I am doing the final editing now, and will be publishing it as a print-on-demand book and an ebook soon. Completed chapters can be found at henryberryinct.blogspot.com. I describe he book as first-person investigative journalism in the manner of creative nonfficton. It is another instrument of citizen action in dealing with corruption in government and professional circles.

Like you, I believe the auto companies should be helped over the finance and insurance companies if given a choice. But apparently we're past that - we've reached the point that any business sector that feels it can get in on the vast Federal response to the recession is going to give it a try. My post was not a criticism of the overwhelming majority of individuals in the automobile business, but rather a wry piece on how top executives try to wheedle money out of government. My default position for thinking of top executives for the most part is Enron. The top people at Enron got caught only after causing immeasurable harm for legions of others. I don't see that the top financial-industry executives, insurance executives, and even now auto executives are qualitatively different from the top executives at Enron. It's just that the Enron people got caught. For a long time now, I've simply assumed leaders of American instititutions across the board--government, religious, private, financial, medical, charitable, you name it--have simply been helping themselves to what they could get in exceedingly crafty ways. What we are seeing with the parade of executives in Washington is an extension of their double-talking and self-dealing. They've sucked up all they can out of the private and global sectors and are having to turn to Washington to keep their charade going. I'm struck by how the Federal treasury secretary and other top financial people have taken center stage to the virtual exclusion of others reflecting other areas of society, such as the labor secretary. This demonstrates the imbalance you refer to in your response to my post.

Yes, Obama will make mistakes, and he will run into opposition - this comes with the territory - what I was circling on in this post was how Obama will react to the opposition he will inevitably run into - there's inherently a conflict between trying to be reassuring and trying to bring change - one (not even Obama) cannot be reassuring to everyone - I wonder if Obama (and by this I don't mean to be underestimating him or the people who suported him) is fully prepared for the virulence and the duplicitous tactics of the ones who will oppose the changes those who supported him presumed he was talking about though he didn't go very far at all in specifying these - after all (a point I did make in the post) he was able to avoid this during the campaign - how Obama articulates, implements, furthers, and defends the changes he wants to bring are what I'll be looking at as his presidency unfolds - this I think will be the most interesting--and the most dramatic--part of his presidency.

I don't know what you mean - I thought I was simply making a observation and musing about Obama in the future - I wasn't reading into motives (although I did say something about campaign strategy) or saying anything about reasons why anyone would support Obama (as I did).

Thank you all for your pithy comments to my post. A couple of other thoughts in response to them: (1) As reported with the Obama tour of the White House with Bush, the president-elect is now lobbying to get the auto industry in on the Federal rescue plan; (2) We're seeing how even someone as motivated as Obama to seek and lead change is in the grip of historical and domestic forces making for a perpetuaton of the status quo; (3) The term bailout is coming to replace loans now that journalists and the public are learning about what is really going on with the hugh payouts; (4) The government is trying to keep up support for the bailouts/loans by saying the public is gettting a stake in the companies - but so what?, ask the stockholders of failed companies, the employees who lost their jobs, and the 401(k) investors what a stake in mismanaged, quixotic companies is worth; (5) You'd think the government would at least require the auto companies, for example, to put forth a plan or program of what they're going to do with all the money they'd be getting, i. e., how they're going to invest it in themselves rather than use it simply to prop up weak operations; but the government is rushing to give the money away to companies rushing to get in on it, in relation to the above point about historical forces, we're seeing how much intellegience such as Obama's plainly outstanding intelligence has to do with government operations.

Carla G. - Yes, on the surface Obama appears to be the clear winner, and to have pulled ahead by a wide margin. Yet, McCain keeps hanging in there, even chipping some points off Obama's lead of a week or so ago. And there's still two weeks to go before election day. If McCain keeps chipping away at Obama's diminishing lead, the election is going to be a toss-up. In hindsight, the choice of Palin as a running mate will appear extremely fortuituous (though never brilliant or wise, I don't think).

Poll figures I've seen lately show McCain drawing within 2-4 points of Obama - after Obama had a double-digit lead about a week ago. Something has to acccount for this. Neither Obama nor McCain has changed their spiel all that much. The only wild card, as far as I can see, is Palin. If the race continues to be a close as only a 2-4 point difference (which is more or less tied considering the usual margin of error for a poll), Palin may just be enough to garner a small number of percentage points to tip the balance in McCain's favor, as strange as this seems.

The financial mess--as Obama usually calls it, rather than crisis--is so vast and complex and took such a long time to develop and will take such a long time to clear up even minimally, it's hard to blame either party or any individual or group. I think homeowners contributed to the problem as well as Wall Street markets--there was a mania and prevailing dishonesty among many persons in many areas of the economy and the society. But anyway--I didn't need the financial crisis--as Bush and his crowd usually calls it--to have a low opinion of Bush, or to be worried over a McCain presidency. The more I see of McCain, the more I see him as a mirror of Bush. While McCain is trying to carve out--more or less expediently and erratically--policies and directions to distance himself from Bush, I see them both as basically the same type of swaggering, needlessly provocative, aimless type of person. McCain may have different policies and directions than Bush, but I don't see they will be improvements in getting the U.S. back on some sort of pathway of decency, respectability, wisdom, prudence, admirability; this latter to some degree because of a forthrightness, courage, and fortitude in dealing with the country's faults.

Basically, my comment re: Trophy Wife was a comment on the calculations of presidential politics and the media; not meant to be critical of Palin or an opinion of her. She was largely unknown at the time. Nor did I mean to imply that any one who has risen to the position of state governor would be merely "wrapping." This would show my ignorance and prejudice more than anything about Palin. It would also be an insult to the Alaskans who voted for her and who support her.

After learning as much as I could about her in recent days and following her and McCain on the campaign trail via TV spots, I don't see that she has the depth or range of experience to be a stand-in for the president in a complex, hazardous world where unexpected events can happen any where at any time. More broadly, while she and McCain are feisty, I'm not sure how far this would carry in dealing with the chronic, deep-rooted problems America faces at this time; or rather, moving the country from the sad situation it has allowed itself to sink into.

David K. says that it is McCain's judgment in choosing Palin which should be talked about. Yes, judgment - but judgment is based on intuition, experience, natural intelligence, foresight.... One has to wonder what is going on with McCain as a person. He has the image of a maverick and something of a renegade in the Repulican Party. This is beginning to look more and more like some sort of romanticization or mythmaking of someone who simply shunts here and there. What are McCain's beliefs? What has he committed his life too? McCain's choices may be unexpected, but they are not inspired nor inspiring. His explanations for them seem an afterthought, not sound reasoning. No one would say that McCain, notwithstanding his maverick streak, does not have integrity, courage, patriotism, and stamina. But the image of him as a maverick is starting to look like a explanation for someone who not only regularly has questionable judgment, but who does not know how to make a judgment.

The main card he is playing is his experience. But what is this? I do not think making connections in Washington for the past 20 years or more qualifies much as experience. What is McCain's "experience" when you come right down to it? I'd say experience is something like Dwight Eishower's leading the Allied Armies to victory in World War II. (Not by contrast, Schwartzkopf's leading American troops against Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard, surely one of the biggest mismatches of all time.) But there's no one around like Eisenhower these days. Besides, times are quite different. The threats are not mechanized; they're tribal, biological, nuclear, and sometimes imperceptible.

At this time, I'm tilting slightly toward Obama. Although I think he's something of a wild card too. But I think with Obama there's more potential for the right sorts of things to happen.

You start off by citing "client misconduct..." - when my subject is serious, undisputed criminal activity of specific attorneys in the public and private sectors of the Connecticut legal system and of a few judges.

Guan Guanine - yes, the titles would remain baffling to the average reader after reading the text; but part of the point of Dexter's book is that the relationship of the title to the book or at least the auhtor's reason for choosng the title are cleared up--no longer remain baffling, though possible always questionable; and yes, Dexter takes no position on what makes for a good title.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, there's a lot of crime and corruption going on - as there is anywhere in the world. But I think the levels of it in the U.S. are at or approaching an alarming level. I'm not satisfied with merely exposing the crime and corrupion in my area, however. Certain persons I have targeted have lost their jobs,; and in other cases, their prestige or influence have been considerably reduced. My approach is not simply reporting or exposing the crime and corruption I have become aware of--and which has affected me personally in varied ways--but in going after the criminal and corrupt individuals. Before long, I hope to be able to report and to outline methods I have been using to get at these individuals who commit their crimes and enjoy their corruption who think they are so safe and secure in the bureaucracy or coporate world. To say only in general at this time, these methods skirt the legal system and similar official channels (which are in many cases shams), but are not illegal, though they are threatening to the individuals who deserve to be threatened. Some of my methods have been effective. I know this because of the witness intimidation I have been subject to for the past several years, including vandalism and a death threat. You know you're on the right track when criminal and corrupt public officials and those allied with them in the private sector conspire to try to eliminate you or to frame you to get you into jail in an attempt to render you invisible and harmless.

That's what lots of people say. But actually, I've done pretty well as both a plaintiff and a defendant in court cases. As I mentioned, the harassment case against me was dismissed with the agreement of the prosecutor, judge, and person filing the complaint with me as the pro se defendant. In a civil case against the corporate law firm Pullman and Comley, the defendant attorneys sued for theft of property of mine and varied claims of legal malpractice had to forge documents, tamper with evidence, and submit perjured affidavits from themselves and another lawyer to try to win that case. When I exposed their crimes of the cover-up, they found a corrupt judge who commandered the case and threw it out on a technicality. I believe this judge, named L. Scott Melville at the Bridgeport (CT) Superior Court on Main Street, consulted with the attorneys on the cover-up; and then commandeered the case when his advise to the criminal attorneys went awry after I presented additional evidence exposing the forgery, etc. I believe this judge was bribed or given some compensation for his criminal role in abetting the crimes of the attorneys in the original crime of theft. I describe the judge L. Scott Melville as a local go-to judge for criminal attorneys. In my civil case based on violation of my privacy, an illegal wiretap, and a cover-up of the wiretap against the Fairfield County State's Attorney Jonathan Benedict (who was involved in the widely-publicized Michael Skakel murder trial), after he refused to turn over to me paperwork relating to the illegal wiretap upon my request for it, the judge ruled that he in effect was admitting my accusations of involvement in the illegal wiretap; which is a criminal, not only a civil matter. So Fairfield County technically now has a self-admitted criminal as its highest state law-enforcement official. But the citizens of Connecticut are used to this.

Anyway, the problems I have run into in the court system are not from representing myself pro se or factual issues or legal grounds, but corrupt individuals in the legal system itself. So I've turned to the media for exposing and dealing with the multifacted criminal and corrupt activity and many related individuals in the legal system I have run into.

Yes, you're right on the mark. I haven't got to it in my book-in-progress yet, but I figure that they wanted to get into my apartment to get their hands on the evidence they know I have and destroy it. But, as a former chess player, I have managed to stay one step ahead of them. I was arrested once on a trumped-up harassment charge. It was intended to be another means of intimidation of me. But I defended myself pro se - and the case was dismissed with the agreement of the judge, the prosecutor, and the individual who filed the charges. My degree in philosophy has finally been put to some practical use. Thank you for your attention to my circumstances, accusations, and efforts. What you get into the picture in a necessarily sketchy, but apropos way is part of what I'm tryng to expose - namely, how the criminals and pathological individuals in the legal system so easily twist things because of the innocence, trust, and decency of the public. One last point - the criminal attorneys are not trying to involve the police, i. e., law enforcement personnel. They already have: The Fairfield County State's Attorney's office has become virtually their handmaiden in trying to further intimidate me and destroy evidence confirming the original crime of the theft of my medical films costing about $6,000.00. No, it's not criminals in the police office - but in the Fairfield County State's Attorney's office, the Fairfield County State's Attorney Jonathan Benedict among them. What I think is of particular public interest about my case is that it is not a routine or familiar case of criminal activity in law-enforcement. What is of particlar interest is the joining together of pubic and private attorneys to try to disguise a patent criminal act by attorneys at the Connecticut law firm Pullman and Comley and jointly engage in a campaign of witness intimidaton of me for bringing the crime to the attention of the law-enforcement agency. The combined public and private attorneys at high levels in the Connecticut legal system tried and continue to try to fabricate a case against me out of thin air.

I think for most writers a website is necessary these days. Apart from how efffective it is, it at least gets one into the picture, and it is there for anyone wanting to get in touch with you. Websites are inexpensive these days. And most services have templates, so you can have an attractive website at no expense and little trouble. Website management is something else - requiring quite a bit of time and ongoing attention, commitment. This of course takes time away from writing - and this sort of administrative, basically clerical-like activity can be boring and aggravating. Book and author promotion is something else again beyond basic website management - this can be like a fulltime job, becoming exhausting and endless. There's always one more contact, one more media outlet. Website/Internet/Search Engine promotion is only one aspect of book promotion. But with the place the Internet has taken in the culture, it is a primary aspect. I don't see how most authors today can ignore it and expect to be taken seriously or become successful. To answer your question directly and simply, I think a website is a basic part of the business of author promotion. Your question seems to imply there is a distinction between a website and a business with respect to author promotion - but I don't see one.
