Learning to sew is not a difficult process. You can find sewing instructors through fabric stores, YWCA, homemaking organizations, etc....
I learned to sew when I was 9 years old. The first thing I made was a pillowcase.
I am now 53 and I sew on a weekly basis.
Find a class or an experienced seamstress and sign up for classes. If and when you go to purchase a machine, do a bit of studying about the different machines and what they have to offer. "Try out" different machines to see what suits you.
Do you want something that is a sturdy machine or something lightweight, do you want basic stitches or fancy ones? There are many, many options available now.
Consider the price. New machines can run anywhere from $80.00- thousands. If this is all new to you, consider purchasing a "used" machine. If bought through a repair shop, you will get a fully refurbished machine for a minimal price.

Ready to wear is ok, but sewing your own clothes is better because, you choose the fabric, pattern, style and fit.
When you sew, the material is better quality, thread is stronger and the items "last" much longer.

The best part is, you are only limited by your imagination.

This whole situation is tragic! So much damage and lost lives, the whole fiasco of trying to rebuild, none of it makes any sense to me.

I see things from a different point of view. Where I live, is where the FEMA trailers are/were built.
Buildings, that stood empty for years, were suddenly teaming with workers, supplies, equipment, and banners. Every possible place was used to build the trailers.
Ads went out for workers and lines stretched for blocks.
The companies were offering fifeteen to twenty-one dollars an hour to anyone who would work for them. They didn't care who they hired, as long as they could hold a hammer, they got a job.
Once production lines were set up, trailers were being built, on the average, of three to four day. I can't tell you how many acres of "rework" trailers there were. Most of what was trucked down there, had serious flaws, but they passed "inspection".

This is why I consider this whole situation a fiasco.
Millions of dollars were spent to build the trailers, the people, who needed them, didn't receive them and the workmanship was shoddy, at best.

I have to agree that this situation is an extremely poor example of how our government handles disasters and if everyone knew what was actually going on, they would be appalled.

I feel so sorry for you, losing your beloved "homeland" and having to relocate to a different area, wondering if things will ever be"as they were".

Yes, gardening IS hard work and gardeners DO deserve praise for their efforts. One thing about gardening, either you love to do it or you you don't, there's no middle ground.
Personally, I love to garden and at times, it is backbreaking work but, the benefits well outweight the pain. I know what is in my soil, how my plants are grown, and I don't have to worry about pesticides and contaminents in my food.

That's the whole point. "Locals" know this is going to happen, because of the ads, promos, etc..... It's the "out of towners" the police are looking to, who cause these problems.
The people, who get arrested deserve to be arrested.
I think it's great that the stats are published!

Very good article and pics!
These insects are harmless to people and help keep the cicada population under control. They are all over, where I live and I enjoy watching them. There has to be at least 2 dozen, burrowing in my driveway, right now. I just go about my business and they don't bother me, at all.
