Excellent! I'm a big fan of 'From Our Own Correspondent', and I can't get through a week without Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's film reviews from Five Live.

Here are some thoughts:

1) Because our listeners represent a broad spectrum—from copy editors to people who are learning English as a second language—what might be a basic grammar topic to one person may be something completely new (or a welcome refresher) to someone else;

2) The articles are merely companions to the complete audio episodes, which contain acted-out sketches and further discussion; these can be heard by clicking the ‘Listen’ links at the top of each article—the ‘Listen to 64K stream’ opens a new window without interrupting your Gather session; and most importantly,

3) If there’s a topic you’d like us to explore, please visit www.mpr.org/gg and use the ‘Contact Us’ link at the bottom of the page to submit your idea. (We previously had an easier-to-use form at the top of the page, but that’s being redesigned and we hope to have it back in place soon. Sending a message through Gather is also an option.) Many of our episodes are inspired by listener feedback, questions and suggestions.

It may not be a very creative answer, but 10,000 Maniacs' "Like the Weather" off their In My Tribe album always seems to fit the bill. The song doesn't just acknowledge the cold, wet, grey weather; it revels in it.

Barb, to answer your question, yes. We learned in the course of making this episode that SADD had changed the words behind its acronym. In fact, its Web site acknowledges the group was "founded as Students Against Driving Drunk." The group seems to have broadened its mission.

Ooh... good catch, Barbara. The word poorly is one of those words that is an adverb (i.e. done in a poor way) but it's also an adjective that means unwell.

So the nice thing about "I feel poorly" is that it's good either way. As is typical with language, there are always exceptions to rules.

It's important to read Mr Quinion's comment closely (or better yet, listen to the audio for the spirit of it). He's saying when people think something makes sense — not just one person — then it makes sense to that group of people.

It happens in households all the time. For example, a lot of people have something in their kitchens called a junk drawer. All the members of the household understand "junk drawer" is a drawer filled with pens, coupons and other bric-a-brac. They know it doesn't contain actual junk in the sense of useless articles or refuse … nor does it contain a Chinese sailing vessel.

When people agree the meaning of a word or phrase, then it makes sense to them. It's this kind of understanding among people that Michael Quinion is describing.
