Sublime poesy. As anachronistic as my own, indeed. May I suggest that there is a beat too many in the fourth line and that 'Comes most forcefully from scents up the nose' would only add to the bathos.

Edgar Allan Poe springs to mind. Your poem is very clever and atmospheric, full of vivd, haunting word-pictures and dark imagery. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading. On the page she 'Threw on her habit', but word of mouth has it that she threw it 'off'.....I'm not sure which image I should bring to mind, the sinister black shape moving through the shadows or the pale, bony silver-haired wraithlike soul gleaming in the moonlight. Equally disturbing options, methinks.

Thanks, Sandre. After the Romans, washing went completely out of fashion in northern Europe for well over a thousand years. On a recent visit to Versailles the lack of toilet facilities was notable (in Louis' day, that is - in fact the French have progressed considerably in this respect since the nineteen sixties) (What?). On the whole I think I prefer the modern way.

Dogs, eh? Actually I've never had a dog, but a good friend of mine owns one and it is totally mad. The pair of them got expelled from obedience classes.

Thankyou Susan. It is a dramatic monologue in metred couplets (almost entirely iambic) in the style of Robert Browning whose 'My Last Duchess' is most exquisite dramatic monologue I know. Read it and you hardly notice the metre and the rhyme. That's the effect I always aspire to. No, I don't use a rhyming dictionary.
