I have just asked my Boss to check it out for me. He says that, as far as he knows, the story goes that it all started in 1902 when President Theodore Ro9osevelt helped settle a border dispute between Louisiana and Mississippi. It seems that the President was taken on a Bear hunt, but that he refused to shoot a young bear cub. The incident sparked a cartoon which first appeared in the Washington Post, but was taken up by many other newspapers across the country.

This inspired a New York novelty store to display a toy bear cub in its window next to a copy of the cartoon, with the title 'TEDDY'S BEAR'

In 1903 the German firm Steiff exhibited a toy Bear at the Leipzig Fair. George Borgford & Co. of New York placed an order for 3,000 of them.

In 1904 Rppsevelt dropped a Moose as his campaign mascot , and used a Bear instead.

It was in 1906 that the words 'Teddy Bear' were coined by 'Play things' , a Toy Trade Magazine.

The new cuddly toys were so popular that Steiff declared 1907 'Barenhahre' - the Year of the Bear.
