Thanks for the informative article, Serina. What you've stated is very true, people with mental illnesses are stigmatized for the behavior of a few.

My son's previous diagnosis was high-functioning autism. I found out yesterday that my MIL is still telling people that he has autism, rather than bipolar. She seems to be unable to admit that the autism diagnosis was wrong. I think she prefers the label of autism because it does not carry the stigma of mental illness, like bipolar does.

BTW--my son does have violent rages when he is manic. However, his rage is never directed at any person or animal, he simply seems to be trying to get all of that built-up anger out. I really wish that people could take a step back and view the behavior a little more objectively, rather than immediately reacting with fear when someone is upset.

Thom, I'm so glad that your wife is doing better.

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in here:

I have a son who is bi-polar. Sometimes it feels that I have no one in the world to talk to about the extreme stress that this disorder inflicts on the entire family. My extended family is not interested in helping or even listening, so I turn to strangers on the internet. You may judge me, and Thom, if you wish; but until you've lived as the caretaker of someone with a mental illness, you may have no idea of the extreme stress involved and the very real need to connect with others who can relate to your experiences.

I'm glad you have such a wonderful friend in your life, Rob. Scott truly seems to be one in a million :)

I spent my easter with just hubby. The kids were off visiting family on their fathers' side. I did call my mom, though. We had a lovely 90 minute phone conversation. I should do that more often.
