Um, just wow. People who do not agree that he is a charismatic leader are what, lacking in intelligence? I stand by my earlier (ignored) comment about Obama's supporters.

Dubya is an often clueless dweeb who speaks honestly. Does that equate to charisma? According to Mariane's definition, it does.

I mostly find myself sad at how this election that is, in theory, all about bringing us together has left more than a few of us out in the cold wondering how we (feminist, gay, atheist, et al) became the parts of the coalition that don't count.

From the linked article: "What am I talking about, you ask, what is leadership? Leadership is the quality that encourages people to become followers. I know, it's a circular definition, but that's the best I can do."

By that definition, he qualifies as a leader. But that means little since it is, as you say, circular and a bit of a 'duh' now that he's elected. (And one might ask compared to what/whom, but that might be seen as mean.)

I have a very serious concern about where things go from here and it has less to do with Obama than his supporters. I read Sumner's belief that Obama ran a flawless campaign and don't know whether to laugh or cry. This campaign fractured the party that used to be the real big tent in US politics; broke it in unrecoverable ways. The unwillingness of some to acknowledge this means the change in tone will continue. Oh, goodie! Four years of sexism, race-baiting, and blind adoration.

Some of you will point at others as the problem, and I will acknowledge that many parties led to the schism, but there has been a distinct lack of post-election reintegration of disparate groups. This I lay entirely at Obama's feet. Many people I know, lifelong Dems and progressives, feel shoved aside and the shoving continues to this day. (Warren is only the most recent slap in the face and I don't think he is any better than Wright.)

To my eye, Obama seems to present exactly more of the same. Sure it's a Chicago Democrat version of that, but it's the same old stuff. Since I also fail at the 'see the charisma' test, and find his speeches obvious and not-so-exciting, I guess I qualify as one person he should be leading who refuses to join a parade that seems to only value me when it comes to showing off the Unity pony.

Sy, before I answer - and my dr. says i have to start using my arm now that is out of the cast, so I will - I am curious about two things:

First, define leadership. Or 'potential to be a leader.' Yes, I know what the dictionary says, but I am curious about what you see as critical leadership qualities in this context.

Second, the omission of (Bill) Clinton from your list is striking, at least to me. Why? I assume you see him as a non-leader from what you wrote but...?

But Tom, this seems to all be based on an incorrect premise.

"Bank of America said late Tuesday that it is not freezing any current or new lines of credit to McDonald's franchise owners, despite reports citing an internal memo from the fast-food giant advising franchisees of the contrary.

I remain unconvinced about the bailout, both the actual need and the usefulness of the proposal.

Like Di, I have been living within my means and am beyond annoyed with the rest of you! I did not take out a loan I knew I could not afford, only use plastic when I am buying online and have no choice, and in general have been telling the rest of my friends they were going to run into this wall for years. Why should I have to pay for other people's stupidity and greed?
