I hope that you are right about turning the corner. And what you say about estrangement and the 60s + media simply makes sense. I really hate the great divide. And this divide is perpetuated by both liberals and conservatives through their conversation to each other. My love for my veterans is in great part what made me decide to stop mouthing off in relation to politics here upon Gather. Did you see David Brancacio's [sp?] NOW program on PBS tonight. It was excellent. It was about the extraordinary care given primarily by 2-3 families and wives to two-three veterans wounded in our current wars, each with severe head trauma. Of course it was a push to get this caregiver's bill through Congress. VERY IMPORTANT. My husband said..."this makes me so angry [what has happened to these young soldiers] that I cannot watch this." I said to him...people need to see this. This is what we all need to see and feel for it engenders compassion and compassion engenders action.

Norm can I assume that you know the "Patriot Guard?" They fill me with such awe. I came across the river coming home from the Center this afternoon. I turned off to go to Costco...and found myself sitting at a light next to 3 Patriot Guard Bikes! They pulled into a restaurant. I pulled right in behind them and stopped to tell them what I think of them. What they do is so incredible. They had just escorted the casket of an east side POW to Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. And each was a Vietnam Veteran. I was quite privileged today.

Well, gotta take my doggies out.

They go to war because they are rightly following orders. That is what you do in the military. Many are in the military because they are grateful to live in this nation and wish to give back. Many come from a long proud history of military service within their families and are following this honorable tradition. There does not have to be a dichotomy between protesting war and serving ones country. One can be a pacifist and serve in the military. Frankly, a pacifist who willingly serves in the medical corps is truly demonstrating his/her commitment to pacifism. Patriotism is not dead. Always, always honor those who serve ........... always.

How right you are Norm. There is a place to come together. There always is. But people identify themselves to deeply with their politics. They do it publicly and pride does not allow them to back off, see the real picture ... see the other person, see them well enough to take the "I" out of their politics ... see the other well enough to allow compassion to rule. This will have to happen for the many many young soldiers returning from our current wars to ever reintegrate back into society and heal.

Money reigns. It is unfortunate but a fact of American life. Perhaps they felt that as legislators, with the economy in the shape that it was in and with Republican troubles that the savvy thing to do was to back the ACAR of 2009. However, as legislators significantly related to and connected to the credit card lobby it is within their own private interest to allow the continued and the increasingly high rates until the new law takes effect. A bit of compromise on their part. I use credit cards only when they pay me to do so.

For me it is quite simple. If one has a different political view, then one becomes apolitical. When people speak of their politics one speaks of themselves. When supporting our troops one can only do this with love. So ... you put your own politics aside for they are relatively unimportant when providing support to out troops. You get out of the way and you simply love those who have fought for our freedoms. You support them with your votes that ensure that they have what they need while fighting. You vote for those votes that ensure that they always have care once they come home. You thank them when you see them. You volunteer at your local VA and then you move on and find another manner and place where you might volunteer. Quite simply you love them. Politics do not matter! Oh, and when necessary you become a voice for them.

Norm those are incredibly kind words. I must tell you that if you met me, you would see how ordinary I am. I have long known that the key to healing is love. And I truly mean that. Love can change many things ... no, all things. This love is a gift from God ... after all I did ask for a new passion within my life ... and I did not dictate from whence I would like it to come.

I did not know that about her. Thank is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it.

When our men and/or women are wounded by war [and few are not] there can be and are no politics in my head or about my life. One puts aside all things political and simply loves and appreciates the one who has been to war. I have watched for many years while love and acceptance heal one who is in pain. And they hurt most of all.

In the old days ... the days of Homer, Odysseus ... well, the community was prepared for war. Yes, the whole community was prepared for what to anticipate and how to react. They were taught of the pain as were the warriors. The community was taught to honor the warrior upon his return. A place was held for him to return to work ... often work of high repute. Ahh well, these are things that I suspect that you already know being a lover of history.

Tragically today the military and civilians are separated. And I might add this is very purposefully done by the military. This creates a "them" or "us" mentality. This mentality becomes fused into politics wrongly I might add. That situation sets up even further the divide that exists. I think that many cannot break away from their politics long enough to love and honor those who have been to war and yes, no matter what anyone says it has been for "us." My politics are about me, they speak to who I am. When I do something for veteran, when I care for a veteran ... I can have no politics whatsoever, if I am to be effective. OK, well we could speak of this all day ... and I am headed across the river. Thanks again Norm.
