I'll send this to Mo and Cynthia! By the way, last month's Psychology Today had an article about a young man who is a numbers whiz. He was home schooled, or rather just unschooled, perhaps by his artist father whom he travelled around with extensively while he grew up. His peers were his father's friends, all creative individuals. I recommend reading about him. He seems so enthused about learning, esp numbers!

Thanks, all for commenting on my poem. Yes, I did use the Steven's poem as a stepping off place to start with but my senses took over and sitting on the porch overlooking the creek and listening to the oriole serenade in the aspen, and watching the eagle down the creek a little way, I thought of all the wonderful trees in my life. I live in the middle of the Manistee National Forest and it takes me several miles of driving through the forest to get to a real paved road and then still it is a forest road for 15 miles to town. Yet wherever I have gone in the world, the trees draw me near. I especially love the massive trees of England, and felt honored and saddened by the huge American chestnut stumps and logs rotting in the woods outside my door in eastern Kentucky. I think I actually felt a tree scream one time as I watched it ripped out by logging machinery. Picnics under trees can't be beat, either.

Okay! Here's the deal with those fish. Each one was made from a form that they had cast from an artist (not local) Then several selected area artists, including my good friend Bill Hattendorf, each got one to finish as they pleased. Bill did his with images of Petoskey stones. The fish will be auctioned off in a few weeks and the proceeds will go to the Portage Lake Watershed fund for lake restoration. Great cause. We've been doing a lot of this type of thing around Manistee County. Last year it was lighthouses in the city of Manistee.

I really think the FCC has over the years dropped the ball, in that they have not been on top ofthe use of this kind of language over the public airwaves. The only word they prohibit seems to be the "f" word and the "n" word. They have let the hate and vitriolic crap spew out at higher and higher levels. It's my opinion that the public has matured enough to decide that they don't want this on public airwaves anymore. And the sponsors got the message --the market rules. Imus can move over to Sirius radio if he wants. I won't be listening to him. (Actually I never have. I'd rather listen to NPR's Talk of the Nation.)

Well, my pen is taking a bit of a hiatus, because music is running through my head these past several months, so I've taken up the composing pen again. I find this much harder to get down on paper, but I'm determined to master this. Right now I'm working on a piece for organ, piano, trumpet and SATB. I think I've almost got it down on paper. And then I have to teach it to my choir and get the organist to learn her part. It's a whole different thing, because you can't go solo. I love writing and it flows so much easier. Good ideas, Kathryn.

There is a big furor out in CA now as a bill has been presented to ban corporal punishment for children under 5. Makes sense to finally reach that point, since it's ridiculous to have it okay to abuse the most defenseless people of our society. Abusing spouses was finally made a felony back in the 70's and how much longer do we have to wait to protect our most precious possessions? They should be cherished and nurtured.
Good article. I do know many people who homeschool their brilliant kids and there are home school associations where the children get together to do group activities. There are surely different types of homeschoolers and not all those folks do it for religious reasons.

Every morning I wake up and read the poem sent to me on my email from "Writers' Almanac" that also could be heard on NPR but I don't get it here. Garrison Keillor makes a wonderful choice every single day of a gem well worth reading. I often copy them into a file to reread, or send them to friends I think would also enjoy them. There's so many to read or listen to. I think I liked poetry since I was little because I was a singer and was exposed to lyrics by Worsdworth, Blake, Shakespeare and Keats, etc. in art songs I learned. But listening to them read outloud in my college Eng. Lit class, read by our irreverant professor who sat on the desk and spent all that time on the 19th Century just on the poetry was certainly where I fell in love with read poetry, not just sung poetry. He always said "Be sure and read them outloud three times".

These facts are troubling for me, but even more disturbing is the situation of the young children who are being left with grandparents, or other family members while their mothers are serving overseas, not just one year, but then again and possibly again deployed so that children are being traumatized by departing parents for long periods of time. These children, many under 5 years old, are losing out on formative years with a parent when it's imperative that they be making meaningful attachments to loving adults, and they do not understand. They too are being permanently psychologically damaged irreparably!
