Good thoughts, Diana. My guess would be that it's because we've seen this mining story before. Oddly, the more common something is, the less important it seems when it happens. A bridge collapse like that was amazingly rare, which is ironically why it drew such attention (that, and the pictures were dramatic). In fact, more people probably die from events related to safety in the mining industry than die from bridge collapses. I guess it just shows cold hard math is not what's behind patterns of news coverage. It's also true that all of us drive over bridges -- so there's a nearly universal interest in the subject.

An argument about the merits or lack thereof of Matt Drudge could go on and on, but Gary suggests kind of a thorny question: If so many people think MPR/NPR are biased, did that show up in the bridge coverage? For the sake of argument: What would coverage from a "less liberal" source look like?

Or does bias become irrelevant when the event is a disaster like this?
