Amazing capture. What did you use: plain vanilla digital or something a little more special? Any special settings you use?

By the way, I know what you're saying about quick changes, my daughter is 14 this past April and I sometimes can't believe how grown up she looks just in the last year. It's frankly a little scary.

Ivan N. is definitely right: it's clearly japanese knotweed.

One thing to note: no matter how attractive, this is considered an invasive species, and should be eradicated. Poking around at the above link should give you a good lead on how to do that. Basicly, you need to repeatedly cut it (multiple times per year, for up to 5 years) and deep till the soil, all the while trying to cultivate a native species to out-compete the knotweed.

Definitely NOT Wisteria: wisteria is woody (this is by description herbacious, or perhaps a gram), and a vine (whereas this is not a vine). Plus, the flowers are wrong to be wisteria.

not lilac
not honeysuckle
not hogweed

Based on your description: dies off in the fall, grows up to 17', blooms late august....it does NOT fit the description of honeysuckle or lilac, as suggested above.

A lot of honeysuckles are vines, and the shrub varieties don't tend to be more than 10' at the most. Also, almost all honeysuckles bloom late spring - NOT late August. Lilac and shrub honeysuckle doesn't die off in the fall (they'll lose their leaves in the fall, as most woody plants do). Also the description of a "bamboo-like" stalk doesn't quite fit with honeysuckle or lilac.

It's tempting to call it Hogweed, based on the flower description, height, and stalk description...but the leaf shape as far as I can see it in the photo again suggest that this is NOT what it is. Hogweed has large compound leaves, the leaves in your picture look to be small to mid size leaves with a spade shape.

So, while I can't tell you what it is, I can tell you what it's probably not: lilac, honeysuckle, or hogweed (pending a better picture of the leaves).

If you can, you should post better pictures of the leaves and stalks. That'd help identifying it.

(That was one of the many tounge twisters that I used as a fun capstone for some of my more advanced ESL classes when I was teaching.)

The obvious one (sorry if this is a duplicate of one above): don't slather it on too thick, as many paints will have the tendancy to peel (esp. latex paints) or crack and chip when too thick. Better to go back over and do a second coat if necessary.

David: the thing that really chaffs me as a fan of the Pats, was that since they lost the superbowl last year, some people scoff at their whole season. Name another team that's gone 18 and 1!

Yes, I think the expectations will be high this year, and I doubt they will live up to them. That's not to say I expect them to be lousy, I just doubt they can match last season's achievement.
