Thanks for all the thoughtful comments on my article. We produced this program on the Rural Studio as part of a larger collaboration on consumption and sustainability, which became a vessel for covering a topic we might not have touched upon otherwise.

Hawkowl D., I absolutely love that you quoted Freeman Dyson. I've interviewed him for a show about Albert Einstein and marveled at his appreciation for the beauty of mathematics, and it's ability to describe the ineffable. He was recently interviewed for Slate [http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2007/09/29/freeman_dyson/]. His answers may prove as a good starting point for moving this discussion in an alternate direction, and helping us look at Darwin as a man who revered nature and its mechanisms of self-correction. His stratographic hand-painted watercolors speak to this side of a passionate young scientist.

Tom and J. Cliff, thanks for the kind words about the piece. We discovered Diana Matar, the photographer and narrator, while searching the Fifty Crows site. They showcase some fabulous photojournalism taking place here and abroad.

We admired Diana's photographs because they convey a sensitivity and a likeness to ourselves, as Westerners, rather than many of the hyperbolic depictions we see in our daily papers and on the nightly news. They're not sensational -- mothers picking up children from school, women waiting for the bus to go to work, couples standing on the street and dancing . It's that elegance and beauty conveyed in her photographs that that caught our eye. Her background and perspective grounds those images in ways we might not have known.

We were producing a program on Haitian Vodou (http://speakingoffaith.org/programs/vodou/) when our online editor found one of her photographs of a "party" on Flickr. He asked her permission to use one of her images and found she had visited a good number of ceremonies and thought it be a visually interesting story to tell. It's been a great experience.

Scott L., I encourage you to listen to Rabbi Dorff and Luke Johnson's own words on this topic. Rabbi Dorff's daughter is gay and so he's had to look to his own tradition for answers, and to question. He's stated in several articles, and in our radio program, that even though Jewish law may forbid homosexual relationships, it places a strong emphasis on companionship -- that no one person should be alone. So, for him, it's a matter of compassion for others who are suffering and including them in the community rather than isolating or exiling them.

carolion, nice thought. We'll be doing a program focusing on community work in the Black Belt of Alabama. In preparing for these interviews, I heard a young Caucasian student talk about how he had bused through some of the poorest communities without ever noticing, or stopping to talk to people he'd seen through the window. It's through these community projects that he's touching the other on a human level.

Sandy F., the sentiments of your closing thoughts are wise and nicely put. Mariane Pearl did teach me though that forgiveness comes at its own pace, and that different approaches create a different sense of need.

Wow. What a great string — so constructive, such a generous spirit and tone. BTW, I also spent some time watching the Harris/Warren debate, and my reaction eventually was the same: there is no point to this kind of tit for tat. There's no arguing — or resolving this — by way of debate, as though we are talking about one kind of knowledge here — factual, logical — and not "poetic" knowledge as well as a vast well of human experience.

Aaron, your quote of the hymn reminds me of my recent interview with former President Jimmy Carter that we'll be broadcasting next week. John's idea of love and the concept of agapic love play an important role in how he sees the world and how he deals with different leaders around the world -- even some leaders who have been marginalized for their heinous actions, such as Kim Il Sung.
