Yes - we'll be watchdogs. We cover the news.

I meant that I'm certain there will be news watchdogs watching us. It already happens. But that has to go beyond speculation. If you want to move beyond speculation, you're free to do so.

FWIW I'm glad they fixed the pageview numbers, that print mistake caused quite a bit of hub-bub.

I think we'll cover the news. I don't doubt there will be feedback and challenges from watchdogs - that's their role.

Diana, I think that the discussion will continue - and that there will be more opportunities (hosted by MPR or other organizations) to try to address it. Or at least try to adapt.

Hi Tom, thanks for kicking this off. You make a good point:

Some of the feedback I've received includes notes that this change actually puts us on par with Canada's practices.

At time of writing (and outside of NewsHour) I haven't seen people citing the medical reasoning, or communicating how that data shifted happened over time. That leaves us with - is this about cost? Does it tie into other healthcare issues? Or is it just the communication?

I'm really glad you spoke up here.

Note: I think you meant "causing some women to have [un]necessary surgery"

I shared this discussion on Facebook (thanks, Gather, for making that easy) and have two very interesting responses:

Matt Abe elaborated on the topic: "Ramsey House Finishing School seems to take this idea to an extreme. The Jon D. Williams Cotillions (http://www.cotillion.com/) are a more real-world version of what our kids and American culture desperately need in the face of an increasingly coarse popular culture. [...] I didn't mean to sound negative against the Ramsey House camp. I applaud showing these girls that there are alternatives to gangsta culture, hypersexuality, and pop culture misogyny. Boys need to hear that message too!"

The answer is that when actions, on the part of individuals, which produce more benefit than harm to others are rewarded and those actions which produce more harm than benefits to others are not rewarded, the result will be that the individual will tend to do those things which preserve, protect, and defend others. Such behavior results in the long run in the survival of the society.

That's a perspective that isn't clear, is it, Sarah. And a good point. Above, Larry wrote about a single family home having multiple forms of income.

Personally speaking I guess it would depend on the situation. We've taken in folks rent-free or barely-worth-mentioning-as-rent for short spells so that they could get out of a jam. If it were long-term that might be a different discussion.

That's a really good point about multiple incomes into one home. It also means more hands for home maintenance and family efforts. Then again, the frustration could go up to 11 too *grin*

Oh man, I haven't picked up a Heinlein in a looooong time... thanks for the recommendation.
