It's such a good strategy that it has failed each and every time it's been tried. Bill Clinton didn't win by going left in the primary and moderate in the general. His appeal had little to do with shifting message and policy from left to right, his appeal was about hope, sympathizing with the problems of the American people, and charming your socks off. The most successful candidates turn Presidents, FDR, Truman, Reagan, they all won not by being moderate but by standing up for their convictions.

Because candidates don't often give a lot of truth and conviction in no way invalidates the argument that that is what appeals to young people.

Jeffrey, I'd love to get into issue responses. The only problem...no one made any substantive differentiation on issues, although they certainly exist. Go to scottau.gather.com and see my previous post on climate change credibility. I think substantive disagreements DO exist, but the debate with 60 second answers didnt allow for that, unless you count Gravel's shots at Obama.

Good article and analysis. We are going to have to use tax incentives and consequences to make this happen, but it had tremendous potential if we do it the right way. Auctioning the permits off off is a good, simple choice, but again this can't only be about punishment, it should also be about reward and encouraging companies to go green!

It's interesting you say that. Believe it or not, most Americans are willing to pay more in taxes if it means everyone in this country will have health insurance. I was even shocked by this new data, HALF of all Americans even said they would be willing to pay $500 more in taxes per year if it meant every American would have health care. $500!!! And it wouldn't cost nearly that. Americans WANT to help their fellow citizens.

PLEASE change that to Democratic Party instead of Democrat party. "Democrat Party" is a purposefully derogatory word used by Bush and his admnistration because polling shows it turns people away. If you are gonna call them the Democrat Party then the other guys must be the Republic Party.

In addition, as Obama likes to point out, he has the same level of experience that Abe Lincoln did when assuming the presidency, 7 years in the IL State Senate (Lincoln was in the state house) and 2 years as a U.S. Senator. Another fair point is that currently we clearly have the most EXPERIENCED foreign policy team in an administration we have ever seen, and what did it get us? Maybe Washington experience isn't the right thing to be looking for. However, there is still something to be said I believe for executive experience and a proven record. On that note, the winner goes to Gov. Richardson.

Randall- no, I am not against all wars, I protest the Iraq war, I was for the war in Afghanistan and the war on terror, when we fight it the right way. Iraq I believe has been a giant distraction from the war on terror.

Brandon- First of all, thank you for your service, sincerely. I believe the military has done a phenomenal job. Moreover, you are right, you have dont all that you were ASKED to do, and all that you could be expected to so. Troops alone can never solve someone else's civil war, a struggle between Sunni's and Shi'as which hast lasted centuries will not be solved be 20,000 more forces or 100,000 more forces. And our soldiers are being ill-served by their commander in chief by being asked to step into the middle of this civil war.

Second, of course I know that there are many intelligent people in the military and I would never write off your comments. My cousin served in the navy and another cousin did a tour in Iraq. Your ideas are MORE valid having served in Iraq.

Third, having lived in Cuba on a study abroad program for 4 months, I can assure you, there is no pending nuclear attack! This is a 50 year old grudge that we can't stomach admitting we were wrong about. Our Cuba policy has been an absolute failure. The days of the Cuban missle crisis and cold war are long since passed.

Lastly, in terms of going to war for oil, I did not get that from some liberal lefties, but from the President's mouth. Not BEFORE we went to war, but later. BEFORE we went, the Vice President claimed the war would have barely any cost at all because the oil profits would make up for it. $362 BILLION dollars later (http://nationalpriorities.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=182) that obviously turned out not to be true. Then during the war, Bush claimed one of the new marks of victory would be securing oil profits. To the comments about the draft ... I absolutely agree with both of your comments, that is one of the major differences and would certainly motivate both young people and the middle class to take more action to stop the war. However, I am not convinced that it is the right thing to do. A National draft might enable neo cons to think that there is no limit on the number of military adventures we engage ourselves in, all we have to do is draft more people. It might provide a dangerous opening to those who want war with Iran and others. Secondly, there are plenty of patriotic Americans, not only conscientious objectors, but those who would prefer to serve their country in a different way, as a teacher, a doctor, a parent, in the peace corp, or in a million other ways. They too are patriots and should not be forced into military service.

Diana...Thanks for your comments, I think you are right, with a little more focus and dedication we can really achieve some things, we are more organized and ready for this fight than ever before.

David...You make some very good and interesting points comparing this with the Vietnam anti war movement. I am all for political action as the PRIMARY means toard accomplishing our goals, lobbying, being involved in PACs, campaigns, whatever political action you choose. However, I still believe there is tremendous value in protest. Just as there can be a drumbeat to war, the message pounded into us night after night on the news, there can also be a drumbeat for peace, or for new solutions. Consistent public pressure, despite its sometimes symblolic nature, when done the right way, can be extremely effective.

Mr. Dershowitz, you completely miss the point here- "The plight of the Palestinians has been covered more extensively, per capita, than the plight of any other group in the world, certainly more than the Tibetans and the victims of genocides in Darfur and Rwanda."

You are talking about in ALL media. Sure, coverage of the Palestinian plight is heavy in other countries, but most certainly not in the United States. I am news-junkie and I don't think I have once seen a piece on the plight of the Palestinians on any of the big 3 (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News).

Coverage in the U.S. is what is important since the assertion is that Israel's case is being advanced by the United States where we can not have an open discussion about our support for Israel without being labeled anti-semites.

Mr. Dershowtiz, I am a Jew, and THAT is demonstrably the case. Every time someone even tries to prevent another view on Israel than the AIPAC/ right wing view, they get called anti-semites. For example, Mersheimer and Walt. Their piece wasn't that well done, but yet their assertion was proven TRUE only because you and others did exactly what they asserted you would, called them anti-semites.

The target for the piece is the left not the right... the hope is that those already with the Democrats will distribute it to their friends who may be a little further left and don't plan to vote with Democrats but rather work outside of the system. There are a lot of people like that out there, particularly in New Jersey!
