I'm thinking tis time to give up on this whole thing.

I'm sorry as hell that I have the NERVE to go out and have a life and can't always sit here and read my connections' articles the minute they're posted... nor do I have the time or inclination to wade through miles and miles of CRAP posted by people who are not connections to find my connections' articles, which, it seems, is now the only option to me.

See, I went out this evening... got back just a little while ago and started trying to catch up on my connections' ~posts~

Not being used to this Feed contraption from hell, I made the mistake of starting at the top - with the most recents ~posts~

Just now, I hit My Gather to go back and continue down the list and lo and behold, that blasted Hawthorne has decided that I have had enough.

I now have only 6 ~posts~ to read .... 805 connections - 6 posts. Unfortunately, the same 6 posts that I have already read, since that's where I started.

So - my choices now?

I can comment stalk.

I can wade through spam hell and click only on my friends' posts.

I can go to each of my friends and then click on the link for their ~posts~ and find them that way. Yeah, I'll get RIGHT on that.

I could, I suppose, for the future, turn on email notifications - but why the HELL should I have to?  Articles for Me worked for me. It worked exceedingly well. It even had comment count indicators so that I could check back and with a glance see when there were new comments and I could decide to go back and check them again. IT WORKED.

I do not want to be flooded with emails. I do not want to go into and out of a new email for each and every ~post~ my connections make. Articles for Me was quick and painless. Email notifications is intrusive and annoying.

But some nimrod apparently did not like the fact that some of us chose not to be fed... that we chose to work around their dictums. So they disabled it.  They didn't replace it with anything ... they just disabled it. You know what that says to me? That says "Fuck you". From Gather to me. I consider myself told. I consider all of us told, actually.

Even after Hawthorne, the workaround link for it worked just fine. But now they have broken the workaround, and I got home too late and I'm not allowed to catch up.

I am a bad birdie. No soup for me!

I am out of tolerance.

The only reason I'm still here ...and expect that I will still be here at ALL any more... is because I have made so many really good friends on Gather...and now I can't even catch up with them without a hassle.

This sucks. It just really, really sucks.

I am very sad.

Poor Flit.... I can't see much in the way of any articles right now either.

I know how you feel Flit. Those workaround links were my lifeline. I HATE using those stupid feeds. They are not always accurate and I end up missing stuff. Even though I didn't comment much, I looked at what all my connections posted and gave tens when I was able. Now, even when I do find my connections stuff, its such a pain in the ass to rate it.

I was willing to try using them tonight even though I DETEST the fact that there are no comment count indicators on them ...but when it cleared them for no good reason other than to PISS ME OFF ... last straw.

If you use firefox, this is what I do....I choose the posts from my feed. I go down to the bottom and right click on the word next to open in a new window. I do that for every page until I find where I left off the last time. Each page, I open the posts in a new tab. I do the same for pictures.

Oh, flit. I haven't had time to check out the latest upgrade. I 'm really sorry to hear that the work-around links no longer work.

I hope you are able to figure out a way to get around. Me, I have 660 email notifications in my non-Gather email. That's how I found this. I still miss stuff though. If an article is published privately I'm not notified. My spam filter eats some of them.

Gee, flit, at first this upgrade didn't seem so bad, but it gets worse all the time. I never knew about the links, I suffered with the feeds and they cut them every night at about 12:30 EDT.

Now one of their paid *(%$## has an article going, telling everyone that it's okay to take stuff from myspace and youtube cause the person holding the copyright will probably never find it here and if they do, what would they sue over?

No, we can't use our videos we've put on gather in our articles. We'd have to go over to youtube, put up a video to bring back here. Sounds to me like gather and youtube and myspace or in cahoots, gather getting a kickback.

I know what you mean about the friends here we don't want to leave. It's enough to make a person furious and cry at the same time.

I have accounts on both facebook and my space... don't use either much ...and can't see how they could really replace what we HAD here

It all started with me posting my Mandrill Butt. I was looking for a picture of something making a stink face, but instead found the Mandrill rear. . . I thought it was funny to upload for just a few hours. I have an unusual sense of humor I admit.
Then I remembered Patricia has an on going joke with Kevin about Cat butts (She'll have to elaborate, I don't know the whole story)
Then my mom thought it would be funny to hold a psudo contest of sorts for butt shots.
And it has sorta snowballed heh.

My general rule is to comment on articles by those who have commented on my articles. Sometimes this leads me to other articles. Because of my stroke it is difficult to reciprocate, but I do when I can. 3 hours tonight so far doing nothing but reciprocating. I've read some really interesting articles and some just so so.

Aside from the changed homepage *twitch* The disabling of the "for me content" is my biggest gripe with this update.

Everything else I can live with.
Flit, the only reason I've hung in with Gather, having suffered Gather downgrade after downgrade, is the genuine friendships I've made. But I don't know how much longer I can put up with the frustration of a site that is becoming more and more user-unfriendly.

Flit, Gather really don't give a rats any more. We're here, apparently, to give them their content and act as a market for the advertising revenue stream. It's win/win for them, but not for us. Like I've said elsewhere, we foreign Gatherers don't even see any benefit from the points system as they will not get honoured outside the US. The only reason we have for being here is to share our work with like-minded others. Now we are, apparently, here to social network.

I thought I'd give the front page a go and followed the recent groups list. The first new "group" I came across was nothing more than a link for one of those online pharmacies that are the bane of my inbox.
That pretty much says it all.

I'm unfamiliar with wordpress, but I think I'm gonna run it through Google.

Yep, the feed reset timeframe is still a leftover issue from the last upgrade. You basically have to spend some time each day here or content from connections is forever lost unless you want to go through each person's profile manually.

This place just keeps getting more screwed up by the day. I don't even look at many things now because they're just a waste of time. I don't use the 'feeds' at all along with a few other features added. They can tweak and fine tune them all they want and I wouldn't give a crap. I write and publish my articles...and Gather can't even get that right with all the glitches that come into play. I've found out I'm capable of writing and don't need Gather for that any longer. If it wasn't for the friends I've made here, Gather would be history. It's beginning to bore the hell out of me. I'm sure not in it for the money with the piddly less than 50 cents an hour I get for being on here when I can make $3.50 an hour being on another site. One of these days I'll just end up telling Gather to kiss my ass like so many have already done and not come here anymore. Gather truly doesn't give a shit about their members, as is obvious with all the crappy changes and garbage they let on the site. Let's name an on line site that begins with the letter "G" that is going to hell faster than any other. No repeat answers. Let me start...GATHER!

I don't think anything is going to change back...I am really sad about this 'upgrade'. Last one didn't bother me that much, but this time I just feel sad. I miss the old Gather. Now we are a social networking site instead of a site with real content and a home page.

From here on out, I will try to keep up with Gather as much as I can handle (the ads are so huge and obnoxious, that it is hard for me to sit here for long). I, too, have made great friends here and that is what keeps me coming back now.

I have made lots of great friends on gather too that is why is upsets me so badly I am missing out on so much of their stuff!! It is taking forever for some of my pages to load, - to me that is wasted time.....I could have viewed and commented numerous times in the time it is taking for it to load!!! I agree with Cyndi...I will try to keep up with Gather as much as I can and my friends are what keeps me coming back but I do have a 'real life' outside gather and every minute counts!

That's what I do in the morning to catch up with the posts I missed.

I'm not saying that it doesn't suck...
Seems like most of you must "gather" much differently from how I do it. Now, to be fair, I am pretty sure I only have about 300 connections, but they are separated into two groups... "friends" and "good friends." When I log on, I change my feeds to "good friends" and "posts" and peruse those... and then I look at "photos" and "videos" and when I've finished them, I change the feeds to "all friends in settings" and "posts." I may miss some here and there, but I never have a shortage of friends' posts to peruse.

I don't even know what everyone refers to as "workaround" links. This method has been pretty successful for me ever since the Hawthorne upgrade, though. I don't miss the "Articles for Me" link at all. It took a little getting used to, but I'm fine with all of it.

Still... I would absolutely hate to lose more friends here! So I'd be willing to go back to the old Gather if it just made everyone else happy! I'm flexible!

So far, I haven't found a "What I think of the Upgrade" article that this comment has fit for:

"Since Gather "Customer Service" over the last two "upgrades" (i.e. downshifts for the mentally challenged) has boiled down to "Bend over, we know you love it!" I'm definitely in the winding down phase here. In other words, my days of "submitting" are very limited."

I am actively looking for another place to be - this ain't it.

FLit, from what I have been able to see so far, it is as if articles, stories, poems are no longer particularly wanted. An article doesn't even look like an article anymore. I think all Gather wants out of us is to chat incessantly. The Gather heads may be making money, but they haven't made something of quality. The quality that was here is gone. They've also made it very difficult to read for some of us. I just get off because my eyes wear out and water and it's just too annoying. Sort of a bummer, isn't it, AGAIN.

Lynn, I've mentioned this to others before--- to help you with the reading and the font size, repeatedly hit your CTRL button and the + (plus) sign at the same time. This should increase your font size temporarily to make it easier to read on Gather. You can now slide your scroll bar so the ads are partly hidden on the right side, an additional advantage. To go back to original size, hit CTRL and the - (minus) sign.

I don't see any real changes in the type/readability on my screen, lynn.... I use both firefox and IE ... I wonder if the changes that are bothering you are something that could be fixed by modifying the font size or something?

I will not let you leave...it would be much too depressing for me. I have a group I set called my short list when Hawthorne hell happened. I need to set up another one now that will have a few more people that I don't want to miss. If I click on my short list-posts, I can see what they have written TODAY and at least follow them back to older things. It isn't nearly as pleasant as Article For Me...but, it does help weed through the things I don't want to read. I guess it might be wise to drop all the connections you really don't read often or care much about, maybe it would leave more room on the feed for those you do.

I don't recommend email notifications... Nick published something earlier. I got an email notification. Actually, I got EIGHT email notifications.

I always get EIGHT notifications when randomly chosen (by Gather,) friends publish something right after an update.

Because WHY?!

Because even though I have NOT requested to be notified via email, any time there is an update or "Site Maintenance" or whatever you want to call it, Gather scrambles ALL of m setting and starts to notify me... multiple times... to the point where my email almost explodes in a fiery ball visible from outer space...

So, I went back in this morning and unchecked everyone that had suddenly been checked through no fault of my own.

I swear, sometimes I feel like this place is Punking me...

Your frustration is widely felt among others here at Gather. I have not been able to use the links you all were talking about, and I am not sure if I can explain what I do. I end up clicking through a lot of email, and sometimes, when I get too far behind, deleting email I really wanted to read to catch up. I don't like it, but it is what I do. I will automatically go to certain ones that have always been there for me, and I try very hard to get to most of my regular must reads. I hope you find a way to keep this stuff straight! Good Luck.

I think the new "ice" upgrade is harder to navigate and I do not like it as much as the "hawthorne" one which was a challenge to get used to in itself!

as I indicated above, I think, I do not care to have any of my email accounts flooded with Gather notifications. Articles for Me allowed me to access a listing of articles all with one or two clicks. Email requires a page load for each article.

I am flit for a reason. I flit. I do not have the attention span for clunky and frustratingly inefficient ways of getting to where I want to be. And I resent Gather thinking that it is reasonable to expect it.

I made my font super big so I can't see the ads. That's one improvement. I was so thrilled after Hawthorne to be able to find the "Articles for Me" and "Images for Me" back door. That's how I always looked at everything here. Please someone who knows how to do this stuff, make another back door route. I can't stand the way it is now.

Good morning, Flit. I should have kept my mouth shut.

Do you think you can find a back door to Articles for Me, Flit? It sure would be nice. Yesterday going through the feeds was limiting, because I didn't see how to click to a next page, and the Posts, going through at the top just went on and on and on. I see Wilma is hoping for a back door too.

I haven't had any luck so far ...can only find a back door if something actually exists... not create one (unless I had access to their server, then I bloody well would)

Wilma's right. I enlarged the lettering like yesterday, and while it doesn't eliminate all of the blinking and jutting ads, it cuts the view of them back a lot. My eyes are already blurring on me from fatigue from waiting to do it. And even not being able to see them all, I still have to wait for the ads to do all their stuff for the page to go to the next one.

What are you up to today?

I just tried to redeem my points. I think I waited too long ... the link is broken. I hope points aren't all gone! I'm trying to get a new vacuum for the shelter. :)
