I’ve thought about how the things that people often say they have no interest in but really, those things are so important that we all have an opinion and experiences that led to those opinions. The same would be true for the characters we create; they must have some reason for their involvement or apathy toward everything that is important to society.
This week, I would like to have our characters look into one of those topics – SPORTS.
Does your character play sports?
Watch sports?
Enjoy playing or watching but not the other?
What types of sports?
How did previous experiences bring your character to this point of interest or dislike?
Whether or not we plan to write sports into our stories, knowing this about our characters will help us develop their personalities. How do you think this might alter the way your characters thinks, acts, chooses friends, etc?
If you do not have a character in the Tuesday Writing Essential project, I invite you to create a character and join us, or write a story (fiction) involving sports.

(My first post since things changed to "start a conversation" - at least that I've noticed. I was sad enough when we started posting instead of publishing. This breaks my heart.)

I think my characters have called characters protective services on me for neglect.
That would make an interesting story. Adult protective services?
I didn't even notice we weren't posting anymore.
How are you?
As my character is a teenager, she shall play a sport.
I am happy to see you. I hope all is well, and yes, we do care.
I'm okay. I think. Maybe even better than okay.
I missed you guys and apologize to those who sent email and received no response. I have 12,000 pending and will probably have to delete them. Please forgive me.
I'm glad you are perhaps even better than okay. Take care and again I am glad to see you.
That sounds good.
You are forgiven but I worried about you and send good vibes in your direction. I don't know what's going on in your life, but I'm glad to hear that all is okay.
Well, to be honest, Dixie has been doing a little wrestling and a bit of power walking, but thats the extent of it. If you feel up to it, you might want to read the 10 part collaboration that Barb Carlson and I did with our characters during your absence.
Hope you're better....and back for a spell.
I talked to Barb the other night and can't wait to see what you've done. I hope to catch up soon, and to stick around. I really do think I'm back for good this time.
You're BACK! WOOHOO! I hope you can find the time to read.
I never thought of it, but my characters never do sports. In my youth I was too small and frail. As an adult I never played in team sports. Oh well.
Unless our story involves sports, I suspect this is one area where, without giving it any thought, many of us give our characters our own feelings toward sports. I also suspect I might be projecting my guilt on to everyone else ;-)
I suspect Brian hates sports. He probably never got picked for any team and a collective groan went up everytime he ended up on one, being the last person left.
I can relate to Brian ... I was that kid.
I can relate. I enjoyed playing sports at home, with the neighborhood kids, but I didn't want to be on teams. I was one of the last chosen at school because I showed no interest.
This is one thing I really hadn't considered. I'll have to think about it.
Sandy! I've missed you desperately, and it's wonderful to see something new from you tonight.
Thank you, Dannielle. I've missed you, too. I know - you wouldn't know by the number of times I've called (sigh). I'm terrible at phoning friends, answering email, and returning calls. That doesn't mean I don't love you.
I could not write about a character who did sports because one I couldn't write about sports without research, and two, doing research for sports would put me to sleep.
Thanks, Lisa. You could write about a character who knows nothing about sports. I'll bet you could make us laugh with that character. She might even boycott sports, or make up stories about sports, or at least date athletes.
Yet, I do appreciate your efforts for the writing group. I'm just thinking about balls being thrown at my head and not being able to duck in time.
Well, helloooo stranger! Good to see you. I've been in and out of here, mostly out, but it's a pleasant and happy surprise to see you here!
Thank you, Donna. It's good to be here.
Hello Sandy, I have been following Barb and Donna's stories, which I have really, really enjoyed, I have tried a couple of your exercises, and would like to participate in your group if I am not too late? If I am, I would like to just try your suggestions, on my character, as I have no real writing skills, I just love to write and I love to read, so, I am going to try this, as long as you dont mind.
I tried a take on your carriage house, and I did the 100 things about the character, which was pretty enlightening (sorry spell check), but, I am unsure if I could always meet your weekly deadlines.
I dont know what has been going on with you in your personal life, but, judging from the previous comments, I am glad to see that you are doing better~~~
So, Hi, I am Barb N. nice to meet you, and again, I hope you dont mind me following you all around and trying to be a "writer" one day, thanks, smile!!!!
It's never too late, Barb. I'm happy to meet you and welcome you to the group. Hopefully, I'll get caught up soon and find your contributions. I hope you posted them to WeeWE. Jump in and have fun. This was a fun group when I was here last and I'm sure they haven't changed.
Thank you so much!!!!! I am thrilled to meet you and I had allready started or lets say, I tried to start a story... I am going to join now, and work on your exercises, and see where they take my character... thanks again, and looking forward to finding out if I can do what I love so much, writing, and reading, and do something worthwhile with it, Have a great day!!!!!
I did a giant junkola on my character, Leona. She was just too much my "bad grandma." I'd grit my teeth writing about her. So I made a whole new person. I hope I can like writing this one.

Nicki Parker.
As you can see, the upgrade's html in comments is beyond me :(
I just learned (I think) how to use html in comments without going to the html page (extra clicks on that?). I haven't tried links yet and I couldn't get my photo in the article.
Well, HELLO, SANDY!!!... Nice to see you back here again!!!
Hi, Duckie! I'm happy to be here again !

Ahh, Duckie but what about clickable links? Even with my pop up blockers disabled my Firefox won't co operate and thus I am no longer able to do "links" !
I did not know non-IE users were having troubles with the Orange Bubbles. Tells you how observant I've been. I've really enjoyed using the built in link pop-up window.
I tried using just the regular HTML code on my Test page but it won't let me do it. Have you tried asking Kevin for help, Kathleen?
I use Firefox and I have no trouble with the pop-up windows. It must be something else.
Thanks, Duckie.
I keep getting a message telling me I need to disable my Pop-up blocker... I did that at the start but somehow gather's HTML thingy doesn't get that!
Welcome Back, Sandy!
I am sorry you've been gone so long and hope you are doing much better. I'm chiming in to recommend you read Barb C and Donna's collaborative effort. They did a smashing job with it. Expanding their characters and keeping us all (well, me at least) entertained over the past weeks.
Thanks, Kathleen. The encouragement really kept me going. I was very, very sad when Sandy's health issues made her disappear. When I say I live for feedback, I really mean it, and if you and some other people hadn't been so encouraging, that collaboration most likely would not have happened.
Kathleen: Regarding links in comments using Firefox, they seem to be working fine for me. You might check into permanently allowing popups from Gather. If you click "allow this popup" sometimes it doesn't work and when you try again, it's reset itself to "no popups". However I have my Firefox set up, it's working just fine. Here is a circuitous link back to this article.
Sandy! Good to see you, girl! And oddly synchronous, since my mental calendar said "call Sandy" today. Now that I know you're still among the living, I may put it off, since I'm sure the rest of your gatherbuddies will be tying up your line. In any case, I'm delighted that you're well enough to be back online. Whew! I was really beginning to worry.
Thank you, Ruth. I'm almost sorry I posted if it means I didn't get a call from you. I'll call you soon (warning, so you won't be too shocked when it happens).
I noticed you weren't posting articles and missed you. Since I'm not involved in this fiction project - I will continue to miss you. BUT - Know I'm thinking of you - good thoughts . . .
Thank you, Richard. I don't want you to miss me so I am going to make sure I get out to do some things other than this project.
Welcome back, Sandy, you're good for this group. I'm, as you know, not participating, but it's great to see you back here.
Marilyn
Oh, dumb question? Why are people green? Just wondering...
