I don't know if all my friends here at Gather know how I ended up at this wonderful site. But here is the story.
I used to spend just as much time at a similar social networking site called myLot.com. My articles used to be just as controversial. However, there was one big difference. myLot easily caved in to my many trolls whom used every loophole in the myLot guidelines to have my posts removed time and time again.
myLot didn't have the capability to check on every article that was flagged, so if they received enough flags they just automatically deleted the post and all your built up earnings were taken away.
The straw that broke the camel's back was when my article describing my experience at Barack Obama's Inauguration was deleted. I couldn't believe it. My post and everyone who replied to my post had their earnings taken away. That is when I said ENOUGH is ENOUGH!
I started asking other members if there was a site similar to myLot with more tolerance for opposing points of views. I can't remember if it was Lisa Frost, Marilyn M. or the both of them who introduced me to Gather, but I'd like to take this moment to say thanks.
Now back to what I'm really enjoying about the evolution of Gather.com. As many of you know, I am a frequent listening and contributor to NPR (National Public Radio). I have it on in my bathroom, bedroom and in my car most of the times.
The other day I was listening and I heard something that floored me. It went something like this. "This program was bought to you by supporters of NPR like you and the folks at Gather.com." I couldn't believe what I heard. A big smile opened up and I said to myself, "Damn, Gather is big time now". Yes Gather, you have arrived.
I've also noticed an improvement in the quality of companies who've decided to advertise here at Gather. I see ads for Ritz Crackers, Dell Computers, MagicJack, EUKANUBA, the show EXTRA, Pedigree and other companies. Have you noticed it? What this means is that the marketers feel that they've found a group of people whom they like demographically. In other words, more revenue should be coming in and hopefully it will be passed on to those of you who've made this site more attractive to the advertisers.
I can tell you that the many positive updates we've seen here over the last year have made Gather the most efficient, easy to navigate social network site on the web. Just do a Google search of any article here and you'll see that Gather leads the pack.
In conclusion, I just want to wish everyone a wonderful weekend. I hope everything is going well. It's been very rainy here on the east coast. A perfect day to just stay indoors. Just ordered a Pepperoni Pizza and some Hot Wings. Got my beer frosted. Life is great.
Take care.
Your friend or foe.

Take care.
I go to my Gather email notifications before anything else. That includes banking alerts, credit report alerts and all others. First place I go to in the morning and the last place at night. I guess I like it too.
I know hundreds of folk who do listen exclusively to NPR and I am relegated to C-SPAN which is great because it is from the horse’s mouth with no interpreters.
Hopefully you will soon be able to tune into NPR. It's such a refreshing change of pace.

Just think, I would have never met such an interesting person as you without Gather. Glad to have you as friend here. I really enjoy your unique take on the many issues discussed here.
The delete comment feature I was always against.
I am glad you are here Lloyd.
I'm glad to have you as a friend here. The delete function is one that has it's purpose, but many times it's used to censor opposing points of views. In that case it's being used inappropriately.
One thing I tell you is that no post or comment is ever deleted from our group, Barack Obama's Presidential Appointments, Bills and Policies.
http://obamasupporters.gather.com/
Opposing points of views are welcomed, encouraged and even FEATURED. That will never change.
A warm welcome to Gather. Glad to have you here and glad for your contributions. Gather has always been a first class organization, however they've become even better. Take my word on that.
Like you, some days, Gather is my only social interaction. And I'm glad for that. If you are ever feeling lonely, all by yourself, feel free to contact me. It doesn't always have to be about politics.
Take care.
Lloyd
Same here Leo. Sometimes I choose Gather as opposed to those nearby. Much more interesting and diverse conversation.
Thanks for your contributions.
Keep up the good work.
I've been solicited by many similar social networking groups like Gather, and I've yet to find one that is of the "Gold Standard" like Gather. It's the best, plain and simply.
If someone knows of a better site, I've yet to see it.
It's so nice to know that myLot have changed it's policies in regards to the trolling that was prevalent. It really left a bad taste in my mouth and I no longer have any interest in supporting them.
I'm not surprised that you find yourself on Gather more and more. It's easy to navigate and the level of debate is educational and very civil.
You will soon understand how to increase your points, thus increase your earnings. Just take a look at those members with hundreds of views and comments. Find your niche and follow through on it.
For the life of me, I don't understand why they chose Lady to be the sacrificial lamb.
Fortunately, Gather didn't cave in to the trolls and restored her account.
I never knew that Gather was started by NPR. I listen to them everyday and never heard mention of that fact. Even I continue to learn on a daily basis. Being on the opposite sides of the political spectrum doesn't mean that we can't agree to disagree in a civil manner.
Your kind Welcome proves me right.
Thanks.
Lloyd
I have mixed feelings about Gather. But one thing I am clearly positive on is the professionalism of the men and women who make Gather work. There is a level of attention and caring to the needs of the people who post on Gather.
Anyway, regardless of Gather's affiliations, I've haven't seen any evidence that they are biased in any form or fashion.
There must be a lot of hard working dedicated people working behind the scenes making Gather work for all of us.
Most of their programing has little to do with politics. I like the Car Talk program and the Grow Your Garden Program. I also won't go a day without listening to the BBC report.
I've really never understood the Gather political correspondents. Do they work for Gather or have they just taken on that title?
Yes the conservative bashing has reached new lengths, but they have no one to blame but themselves.
Just look at the amount of political missteps the Right have made over the last several months? If the Left had our Governor Sanford or called the President a liar on National television, you better believe that there would be an increased level of liberal bashing here at Gather.
Gather so far, is fulfilling these needs and I am glad of it. I am not impressed with teh stingy point system and its secrecy, considering how much they depend on getting our content for income. If I ever find a more openly managed system I will probably go there, because it takes the same effort no matter where you go and it certainly makes it possible to spend more time on here if you earn a little from it. I don’t know what they would have without the right mix of readers and commentors.
Your are one of the best assets gather has! Your post are thoughtful and full of substance. This is really needed on a site where it could be run over with "what I did today" and recipes and bored housewives, librarians and wanna be poets.
BTW, are you working for them now? :)
Hello Dexter.
I can just imagine the odds you face in presenting an opposing point of view in the State of Texas.
Some of the characters that have negatively impacted our country came out of the Lone Star State, most noticeably Former President George Bush. I'm glad that Gather gives you a forum to express your views without negative personal repercussions.
As far as the point system is concerned, no paying site is going to openly expose the inner working of it's system. That only opens them up to abuse.
I'm sure Gather is a work in progress, adjusting to the posting, viewing and replying habits of it's members.
I find them to be generous at times and less generous at other times. But it has a way of balancing out. I'm just glad that they keep their word and pay when one reaches a certain level of points. I've never had a problem with them in that regard.
Thanks for the kind words. I try to be an asset to any endeavor that I'm a part of. It's the only way to be rewarded for your efforts.
Let's not minimize the people whom post recipes and poems. They have a place here as can be seen by the amount of views and responses they receive.
Although we might feel that politics in America is of the greatest concern, to many it's a pain in the neck. They'd rather leave it up to us to debate the issues and make a decision after reading the pros and cons.
Thanks for being a friend and contributor to my articles. I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future.
Your friend.
Lloyd
PS. I only wish that I was working for them. My goal is to work for a online website such as Huffington Post. I need to get a couple hundred more posts under my belt.
Thanks Dexter.
You are a great friend.
Lloyd
I would like to see more people who dish it out learn to take it here instead of crying to the department of whiny butts. If you're going to serve it, you're going to get served back.
In the olden days we called them Spanish Fly and they were only seen on the back pages of porno magazines. Today we call them Viagra and Cealis and the commercials interrupt our breakfast, lunch and dinner on a daily basis.
Gather better not go there. Sometimes one has to say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH".
What in the hell happened?
I happened to see an ad for an event that is going to take place at my workplace, so I'm thinking they're targeting people based on gender and location too.
We haven't really crossed paths that much even though you are on my friends list. Hopefully that will change.
I'm glad you liked this article. The evolution of Gather may have gone over your head because many of the changes have been subtle ones. But overall they amount to significant change for those of us who come here on a daily basis.
We all have our reasons for posting here. Some post for points, some post for support and others post to get things off their chests.
In all honesty, I post for all the reasons above. Why not get some things off my chest and at the same time be rewarded for it?
Anyway, I'm glad you've found a receptive audience and wouldn't dream of leaving. That alone makes Gather a special place.
Stay in touch.
Your friend.
Lloyd
Thanks for being such a good friend.
I am glad you found Gather
Have a wonderful weekend.
Became a point gathering club,
Is returning to being a writing site. HURRAH!
I hope some of our writers who left during the point posters reign, return.
I think I joined in 2005, then was gone beginning some time in late 2006.
I am like Dexter, I live in a community, where I dare not speak of my beliefs.
but I am not in danger of anything but exclusion.
My favorite thing about gather. the very ordinary people writing and posting their ideas.
I do appreciate the more experienced and knowledgeable writers like your self.
But. . . . I love the honest directness of my gather friends.
This is where I can argue and pitch my ideas and have
Isn't it amazing that many still live in fear of expressing their beliefs? I guess that's the political climate in which we live.
In my opinion, everyone at Gather are just ordinary people just wanting to share something with others.
Thank you for compliment and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Take care.
Lloyd
I don't often leave comments at your posts, as I don't consider that I have much to share of import on the political side (just a lot of pondering to do), but I read quite a few of them......as I do the comments they promote. I'm glad you've found your home here.
The fact that I've never had to contact Gather support or customer service speaks volumes of them. All of my experiences here has been nothing less than positive.
I understand your feelings towards political discussions. They are most always controversial and take a lot of effort and energy to deal with. Not everyone has the patience for such hot debate.
I'm glad I've found Gather too.
Thanks.
Lloyd
Even though Gather is liberal tilted and overwhelmingly populated by far left kooks, I have to admit that it's been fair. I have had a two things deleted and lots of flags but they have allowed my "offensive" stuff to stand.
I will admit, I never liked NPR because I heard about what was aired on there and there were always examples by talk radio about how liberal biased they are. I started to listen because I thought it was hypocritical of me to complain about all the Fox News and Rush Limbaugh fearers when I was doing the same thing. I realise the people who trash Fox News and Limbaugh are just trying to keep people away in fear that they might actually like it. It's cheap but effective. I really like NPR. Their politics tilts to the left but their overall programing is very interesting.
Although we rarely agree, I look forward to your comments. You make my blood boil at times and I want to reach through the computer and shake you up once in a while. LOL
But as I mentioned, I would never delete any of your replies to my posts and your opposing points of views are always welcomed.
As far as NPR is concerned, I do agree with you. Their politics has a "slight" tilt to the left but their overall programing is very interesting.
I've learn so much from NPR. That is why I have it programmed in my bathroom, bedroom and car.
Thanks for the kind words. We'll soon get back to our political debates as soon as someone on the Right pisses me off once again. LOL

I'd like to thank you for FEATURING this post. Your group Sentient Majority has 69 members, 13 posts and 108 new comments in just one day. I must say that it is off to a great start. Great idea and great work.
http://sentientmajority.gather.com/
Thanks.
Lloyd
Why is There Peace?
Violence is declining, argues psychologist Steven Pinker. What are we doing right?
War is not the answer.
I rather like the idea of being able to express my ideas and feelings without fear of repurcussion. I get slammed quite a bit but that's OK. I can hold my own and I have no problem with other people expressing opposing viewpoints. When they start the name-calling and other nasty retorts, I just consider the source and let it go. The best part is that I don't have to answer to them at all.
I have really enjoyed your posts and viewpoints, Lloyd. Hope your garden has been fun, too. It's been a long time since I've had good fresh veggies. Keep up the good work.
I treasure your contributions to any article I post. You have a way with words that get straight to the heart of any issue.
Being part of any social network and engaging in political debate means you have to be thick skinned. Being slammed is part of the process. You handle yourself well.
As far as my garden goes, this was my best one ever. I can't wait until next spring. I'm already making preparations for a bigger and better one.
Thanks.
Your friend.
Lloyd
Thank you so much for the friend invite....
God Bless You too.
Your new friend.
Lloyd
I always enjoy reading your posts or viewing your lovely flower pictures. i don't always comment on the posts, but I view them.
I enjoy Gather a lot. I got frustrated here early last Spring. Between the trolls and the changes going on, it seemed like a mess. but I believe things are ironed out and Gather has made this a much more enjoyable site for all.
Nice article! Thanks!
I remember when you tried to shut down Squirrelbait and couldn't do it. Aren't you glad now? Squirrelbait was the first group I joined as a member of Gather. I've never posted an article without posting it your group.
I'm glad that you are enjoying your Gather experience a little more these days. Never let the trolls get you down.
Thanks for FEATURING this article. I can't believe that it's be FEATURED twice in one day at the following groups. I urge everyone to join these 2 groups and support these active members.

We all need to thank Lisa and Marilyn for bringing you here. You have sensible comments.
I'm glad you liked the story. Your first experience is a good one. Trust me. I've seen the bad side of many social networks.
Thanks for being a friend and part of the "Checks and Balances" that our Founding Fathers spoke so fondly of.
Lloyd
Gather has changed a lot during the year that I've been on here. I'm hoping that it is on the path leading back towards being more of a writer's site.
Thanks for the kind words. I have your group on email alert so I will be notified of all new posts.
Take care.

I've been here longer than most, and mioght not completely agree, but applaud the spirit of your post.
I know we are going to have a pretty lively debate when you stop by. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Glad to be a friend of one of Gather's senior members.
This we CAN agree on. It almost seems as if they cater to the lowest common denominator. "What do you like better, Coke or Pepsi"?
I didn't even wait to reach payout. I truly lost all interest in myLot. Once again we agree. Gather is SO MUCH BETTER.
Thanks for stopping by.
Your friend.
Lloyd
I am on Newsvine also, went there to debate against some evolutionists. Great debating site, but Gather is much more. We all genuinely care for each other.
Just look at all those messages of support, comfort and condolences we send to each other.
Where's Jen D.? I miss her HUUUGS.
