from Michael Moore
Friends,
Nothing like it has ever happened. The President of the United States, the elected representative of the people, has just told the head of General Motors -- a company that's spent more years at #1 on the Fortune 500 list than anyone else -- "You're fired!"
I simply can't believe it. This stunning, unprecedented action has left me speechless for the past two days. I keep saying, "Did Obama really fire the chairman of General Motors? The wealthiest and most powerful corporation of the 20th century? Can he do that? Really? Well, damn! What else can he do?!"
This bold move has sent the heads of corporate America spinning and spewing pea soup. Obama has issued this edict: The government of, by, and for the people is in charge here, not big business. John McCain got it. On the floor of the Senate he asked, "What does this signal send to other corporations and financial institutions about whether the federal government will fire them as well?" Senator Bob Corker said it "should send a chill through all Americans who believe in free enterprise." The stock market plunged as the masters of the universe asked themselves, "Am I next?" And they whispered to each other, "What are we going to do about this Obama?"
Not much, fellows. He has the massive will of the American people behind him -- and he has been granted permission by us to do what he sees fit. If you liked this week's all-net 3-pointer, stay tuned.
I write this letter to you in memory of the hundreds of thousands of workers over the past 25+ years who have been tossed into the trash heap by General Motors. Many saw their lives ruined for good. They turned to alcohol or drugs, their marriages fell apart, some took their own lives. Most moved on, moved out, moved over, moved away. They ended up working two jobs for half the pay they were getting at GM. And they cursed the CEO of GM for bringing ruin to their lives.
Not one of them ever thought that one day they would witness the CEO receive the same treatment. Of course Chairman Wagoner will not have to sign up for food stamps or be evicted from his home or tell his kids they'll be going to the community college, not the university. Instead, he will get a $23 million golden parachute. But the slip in his hands is still pink, just like the hundreds of thousands that others received -- except his was issued by us, via the Obama-man. Here's the door, buster. See ya. Don't wanna be ya.
I began my day today in Washington, D.C. I went to the U.S. Senate and got into their Finance Committee's hearing on the Wall Street bailout. The overseers wanted to know how the banks spent the money. And many of these banks won't tell them. They've taken trillions and nobody knows where the money went. It certainly didn't go to create jobs, relieve mortgage holders, or free up loans that people need. It was so shocking to listen to this, I had to leave before it was over. But it gave me an idea for the movie I was shooting.
Later, I stopped by the National Archives to stand in line to see the original copy of our Constitution. I thought about how twenty years ago this month I was just down the street finishing my first film, a personal plea to warn the nation about GM and the deadly economy it ruled. On that March day in 1989 I was broke, having collected the last of my unemployment checks, relying on help from my friends (Bob and Siri would take me out to dinner and always pick up the check, the assistant manager at the movie theater would sneak me in so I could watch an occasional movie, Laurie and Jack bought an old Steenbeck (editing) machine for me, John Richard would slip me an unused plane ticket so I could go home for Christmas, Rod would do anything for me and drive to Flint whenever I needed something for the film). My late mother (she would've turned 88 tomorrow if she were still with us) and my GM autoworker dad told me in the kitchen they wanted to help and handed me a check for an astounding thousand dollars. I didn't know they even had a thousand dollars. I refused it, they insisted I take it -- "No!" -- and then, in that parental voice, told me I was to cash it so I could finish my movie. I did. And I did.
So on that March day in 1989, as I was driving down Pennsylvania Avenue, my 9-year-old car just died. I coasted over to the curb, put my head down on the steering wheel and started to cry. I had no money to take it in to be repaired, and I certainly had nothing to pay the tow truck driver. So I got out, screwed the license plates off so I wouldn't be fined, turned my back and just left it there for good. I looked over at the building next to me. It said "National Archives." What better place to donate my dead car, I thought, as I walked the rest of the way home.
Though it wasn't easy for me, I still never had to suffer what so many of my friends and neighbors went through, thanks to General Motors and an economic system rigged against them. I wonder what they must have all thought when they woke up this Monday morning to read in the Detroit News or the Detroit Free Press the headlines that Obama had fired the CEO of GM. Oh -- wait a minute. They couldn't read that. There was no Free Press or News. Monday was the day that both papers ended home delivery. It was cancelled (as it will be for four days every week) because the daily newspapers, like General Motors, like Detroit, are broke.
I await the President's next superhero move.
Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. Please know that it has not been lost on any of us from the Rust Belt how our corporate bigwigs were treated (remember, the auto companies wanted a loan, not a handout) compared to how the titans of Wall Street got trillions of free cash, lunch at the White House and a photo op with the Prez. Trust me, we get it. And, if there is a God in heaven, the thieves of Wall Street will soon pay. Also... the sight of our president having to promise that he would back every GM warranty and give consumers a bonus if they trade in their old Grand Am for a hybrid, was alternately sad, hilarious, and just plain weird. This is what it's come to: the Commander in Chief of the Free World is now Mr. Goodwrench. Jeesh.

If the corporation didn't get any money from the government, then the CEOs can rest easy. I think that's why Ford decided not to accept any money. I can't wait to see if the heads of any of the finance companies that got government money get booted out. While GM may deserve what they are getting, the financial corporations deserve it much more. In fact, I question why the auto companies are getting such rough treatment while the financial companies have gotten very little of this treatment. The financial companies have gotten a whole lot more of the money.
Can I pre order a ticket?
I don't think, with the price of a car what you used to be able to get a house, a very good house, for they are increasing their revenue and to hell with the rest of us.
They (the car companies) should go for Chapter 11 and restructure.
The car companies got bail out money and aquandered, now they have to pay the piper!
Helping you reach your gather goals!
Obama bin ladens deposing a CEO of a company is one more step towards a dictatorship. Isn't that one of the reasons fought against Russia and we're in Iraq and Korea right now. Protecting people freedoms, keeping government in check.
Obama should be impeached for this.
I think Mr Moore does a pretty good job of calling our attention to problems. Don't think he has all the answers but don't think he claims to.
Don't think our president has all the answers, be he is not claiming to either. I am glad he is making efforts to help average citizens.
One question - was the GM guy really fired or just persuaded to quit. What would have happened if he had said, "I don't want to quit."
B) The people who foam at the mouth about Michael Moore usually have never SEEN one of his films. But, GOLLY...SHUCKS, they sure have heard about him on FAUX NOISE!
C)One day Michael Moore will be considered a great American Patriot!
The ignorance in many of the comments here is staggering!
He really over stepped some boundries here.
~ Point Fairies
But thank you for being so presumptuous in telling me what I have or have not watched.
One does NOT receive the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival with "very poor cut and paste" films. ROTFLMAO
Once again for Mr. "Wolverines" (btw...Red Dawn has to be one of stupidest films ever made) President Obama did NOT fire anybody! The CEO of GM RESIGNED, took his $23 Million dollar Golden Parachute and is giving every working stiff in this country the finger right about now!
Michael Moore's films expose nothing but truth, you can't edit every word to make it sound a certain way! Sicko and Fareinheidt 9/11 are great examples of the truth will out!
I never considered Bush was leagally president, you did?
Like Spartan said. No one got fired, they were given the ultimatum when they firts (the CEO's faced) that they had to follow certain guidelines -rules- in order to not have to pay ita ll back sooner than they thought.
These guys took bail out money, paid big bonuses, went on spa days and expensive holiday's, then when they ran out of $ again, they wanted more!
So, even if we accept your version of events and Waggoner resigned under pressure from Obama in exchange for money for his company, what you have just admitted to is the Obama was engaged in extortion. Which happens to be a felony and would be grounds for impeachment.
I know it comes as a surprise for those like you who need someone to tell them how to think. For Conservatives it's Rush Limabugh and Fox News and for liberals it's Obama, Gore, CNN, and MSNBC, but some of us actually think for ourselves. Once again your ignorant and erroneous assumptions are wrong (not unusual for a liberal though). I don't even have cable so it would be kind of hard for me to watch Fox news.
Humm, Michael Moore(on) is reliable and accurate because he won an award from a group that is very biased and not really recognized or cared about by the majority of the world. Interesting, using that criteria then we should take a Director named Joone because he's won awards for his films too, along with all the other award winning films in this link.

I will give you credit for getting something right. That about not being able to change a liberals mind despite inarguable facts.
What the hell are you talking about? You have to emesh yourself into the lies and bunk the Repubs spew? There IS NO REPUBLICAN PARTY!!! No viable candidates, no platform, nothing but greed.
Obama didn't do anything to coerce Waggoner, he was given the option of resigning or going down in flames as it is he has a $23 million golden parachute to ease him down. If someone cannot follow the precepts of descency and use the help congress has already given these companies, someone has to take over! Cut and dried! They were told the terms of the bail-out, they thought their Unions would cover for them whilst they workers and CEO's with money and sent the entire staff of very expensive holiday's, then they needed more money. like unruley college kids with daddy's credit cards they will not conform to the rules surrounding these loans and so must forfeit their paycheques and their dignity, which they did long ago!
I have no idea what the Republicans are saying, I don't pay much attention to them either. Both the Republicans and Democrats have caused this mess, one of the few bipartisan things they have done. If you remember from my posts during the election I advocated to voters to stop acting like cows lead to slaughter and at least consider political parties other than just Republican and Democrat. To make a REAL change.
Considering on Sunday night and Monday morning EVERY news outlet, including CBS, NBC, NPR and Reuters all had a story on Obama forcing Rick Waggoner out of GM. They further reported that Obama told GM they would get no more money unless he resigned as CEO. Even by your own admission, Obama told GM no more money unless Waggoner stepped down. This had nothing to do with a business plan, it was personal. At the very least it borders on extortion, a person or entity coercing another under threat. Though it could also be bribery.
Should Waggoner have stepped down as CEO, maybe. I have some friends who work for GM and they have seen vast improvement for the better under Waggoner. This time last year there was only praise for GM because they were selling cars (mostly SUVs) and turning profits. Then the $4 a gallon gas hit and the banks stopped giving out loans, this is what, in large part, has caused GMs problems.
It was the financial sector, AIG, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch that have been partying with the bail out money, not the auto industry. A sector which Obama has place NO restrictions or qualifications (until just recently and then under great public pressure) on.
I have two main problems with this whole bail out.
First, if GM doesn't have a viable plan then they shouldn't get any more money. If they do they should. Another way to phrase it is if GM meets the criteria, as they would have to with a private loan, they should get the money. Having a government official set themselves up as a dictator or super CEO or whatever term you want is questionable at best. I do wonder what the liberals would say if Bush had done something like this. BTW, if Bush had done this I would still be against it.
Second issue is the fact that Obama is putting these restrictions just on the auto industry and not the financial sector. Obama ran as a Democrat, as a friend of the unions and as a black man. He relied on these core constituencies to get elected to office. First chance he got he turned on his supporters. Demanding wage cuts, cuts in benefits and retirement and other conditions of employment. Concessions he is NOT asking from workers in the financial sector, a sector which has far more to do with causing this melt down than GM has.
Be warned, this is just the first shot across the bow. If/when Obama gets union members in the auto sector to make concessions other unions will be next and following that the rest of the American work force. The UAW is one of the most visible and powerful of the unions any concessions they make will effect the rest of the American workers
There is plenty of documentation of the banks and insurance industry doing this, with impunity though.
there were standards and guidelines put in place when the first of the bail-outs were given out to the auto industry. Unlike Bush who wanted to give the auto industy money with no reckoning at all as to where it was being used.
obama and his team have stated that GM and all the auto companies requesting funds must restructure and were given a time limit and they didn't comply. Forfeit!
If it starts with a "G," it's All Good! Thanks for your support!
Obama, his supporters and the media played the race card all during the primaries and the election. Remember all along there were several "historic" moments because a black man won something, not the most qualified, not the best suited for the job, but the black man. Now that he's slitting the throats of his supporters we're all supposed to be color blind and ignore the fact that he's favoring the rich white guys? The same rich white guys liberals condemned Bush for supporting?
Georgiana, give us a break, since ACORN got Obama elected, then from your thought (???) process I can choose to think Obama is NOT my president per your rules. Got it! Thanks for the tip! Oh by the way, speaking of "greed", have you looked at the list of big money given by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? You claim you want truth, so take the time to find out who benefited from the mortgage scams that ignited the economic mess.
Spartan, your naivete shows with your defense of "does NOT receive the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival with "very poor cut and paste" films." Anyone with common sense recognizes the Hollywood "good old boy" syndrome at play in all their various awards. NOT based on fact or talent, but the "good buddy" system.
Michael Moore is a slob, whose comments and films are FULL of prejudice and lies of elaborating partial truth out of context. By the way, how many of you commenters here own an American Car? Just curious.
Early in the primaries the DNC told the candidates they were not to run in Michigan and Florida, that those primary votes would not count because the citizens of those states actually chose to run their own states instead of letting the DNC do it. Obama said "yes masters" (as did Clinton, but I already knew I wasn't voting for her because of the past). This showed me he wasn't a leader, he was a follower.
Later in the campaign, Clinton and Obama were fighting over how to divide up those votes. Obama stated that he "wanted to run in Michigan but he couldn't fit it in his schedule". So, on top of being a follower he is now a liar and a wimp who won't even stand up for his decisions.
Do you remember the Rev. Jerimiah Wright? How Obama stated on national TV that he could no more disavow Mr. Wright than he could his own grandmother? Then a few short weeks later he was kicking Mr. Wright to the curb?
The list goes on, claiming to be for gun rights or against them depending on the group he was talking to, claiming to be whatever he thought he needed to be according to whom he was talking to.
I don't vote for people like that.
You want to go back to the Clinton administration? You want to go back to a cheating playboy who had his head and hands up the nearest skirt or receiving oral sex while the USS Cole was attacked, the Twin Towers were attacked, our troops were attacked in Mogadishu, all with impunity? Oh, yeah I forget he blew up an aspirin factory to deflect attention from press releases about his sexcapades.
You want to return to the Branch Dividians in Waco or Ruby Ridge where federal snipers killed a woman holding ONLY her newborn baby and shot a 13 year old boy, who was running away from them, in the back?
If it weren't for the Repubs these problems wouldn't exist? Clinton signed the first NAFTA bill into law starting the outpouring of good paying American jobs (yes, Bush did continue and expand it). Clintion ignored the mounting evidence of Osama bin Laden, allowing him to grow and improve his terrorist network and attack Americans across the globe with impunity.
The Democrats held the Majority in the Senate for 41 months of the Bush administration, including the last two years, years in which Obama was in the Senate and the Democrats also held a majority in the House. The year in which the first economic stimulus plan was passed and sent to Bush to sign. So the Democrats have HAD plenty to "do with this".
I'm not exonerating Bush or the Republicans either cuz they also had their hands in creating this mess.
Mostly I'm blaming the voter. We have the government we chose, the government we deserve because we keep voting these people in. And YES we do have a choice, other than Republican or Democrat.
You guys are just living in some dissatisfied world aren't you.
also, fine, lets go for alternative parties, it only takes votes away from the major parties and that is how the Republicans have gotten elected so many times.
I don't know how old any of you are. I am coming up to 60 and have seen more politicians come and go on both sides of the Atlantic than you have had hot dinners.
When I was young, and naieve, thinking my vote would make the difference, I voted for Jeremy Thorpe, in the U.K., the head of the Liberal party. They hadn't been able to beat the Tories or Labour since 1919 so i thought I should vote for him. It didn't count, I think that election is when Heath 9Conservative) was vvoted in and then Maggie Thatcher (Ronald Reagan in drag) and everything went to shit after that.
Until any of us are in those board rooms or the Oval office and privy to all the factors involved we can only surmise and so should let Obama get a few years in beofe he can even try to untangle this deceitful web the prior eight years has spun.
PLEASE tell me this is a hypothetical "question"!
FINALLY!
I write this letter to you in memory of the hundreds of thousands of workers over the past 25+ years who have been tossed into the trash heap by General Motors.
And how many retirees?
Instead, he will get a $23 million golden parachute
We need to find a way to stop this.
No kidding. We need to start requiring accountability in A LOT of areas. We also need to go after the liars and theives that got us here.
The car companies got a LOAN, if they file bankruptcy WE LOSE that money. The banks and financial industry got a bailout and now we have no idea what they did with it.
Right after Baby Bush and Darth Cheney and their minions.
I am surprised at you Elizabeth.
And what do you mean 'our' money. Don't know about you but I have never paid taxes! I file them, and I pay property and sales tax, otherwise it is someone elses money he is using. The auto industry has too many concessions because they have a strong union, remember Hoffa?! Talk about dishonesty and gangsters!
Obama is a decent man that has a tough job. He has to weed out the corrupt from the big business that has takena ll for themselves and trod upon the rest!
That depends on your definition of "American". Do you mean made in America, by Americans, or a brand made in another country that happens to be based in America?
I am surprised at you Elizabeth.-Georgina
I misunderstood what you wrote....
obama has such a lot to do, just cleaning up this former adminisstrations mess i think we should trust that he and his advisors will get it right eventually, just give peace a chance!
I'm dissatisfied with the Republicans too. These two parties working, sometimes in co-operation with each other, sometimes in opposition to each other, that have driven this country in the ground. Just before the November election Congress had an 18% approval rating from the American public. YES 18%. Yet 100% of Republicans or Democrats were voted into office.
Any vote legally cast is NOT wasted (unless your a Democrat living in Florida) and if more than 50% of the voting public voted for a Libertarian or an Independent it would take from BOTH parties and send a strong message for CHANGE.
FYI, Hoffa was the Teamsters Union not the UAW.
Obama is NOT calling all CEO's to task. The CEO's of the big banks and financial institutions are getting a free pass. While they were getting their bail out money, Merrill Lynch was giving out huge bonuses and Bank of America was buying up Merrill Lynch with money given to them to loan out to business and consumers to stimulate the economy. When asked by the government what they did with the money the banks told Congress that it was none of their business. And Congress let it drop.
AIG, hired Sheryl Crowe for a private concert at a party they threw. The only thing that happened to them was they got even more money. Yeah, after public pressure, the government made some noises about getting the money back (probably to be paid later when the furor dies down), and got most of it back.
But that brings up another Obamaism. Do you remember Obama, when trying to get the first stimulus bill passed after be became President? People were raising questions about the amount of earmarks, earmarks he *promised* to get rid of (another lie) and he publicly stated that we shouldn't let less than 10% of the total stimulus bill distract us from this important work? Well, the amount that AIG spent on bonus' was less than 1% (yes you read that right) of just the money AIG got and Obama was letting that distract both him and Congress from continuing this important work.
I can't see how anyone can take this man seriously.
And it IS my money, I DO pay taxes. Not only income tax, but other federal taxes, like the gas tax and the excise tax on tires, just for beginners.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/25/opinion/25dowd.html?_r=1&em
You are opinionated, I'll give you that!
Obama is a real person, perhaps you haven't had real contact with one such as he, but JFK, RFK and MLK are good former examples.
He is loved all over the world, except in your little disgruntled corner of it, and I find, people such as yourself are disgrunteled at any attempt and leadership by anyone but one of your own choosing.
Jusr where do you think an attitude like yours will get this country or the world? Live and let live, just don't do harm if you can help it, or if you have to do some harm, make sure it is to the least amount of eople possible.
AIG were on holiday at a resort here in Rancho marguerita I think it was, at the cost of $5000 per day. that is documented. I haven't even bothered to acquaint myself with all these companies names. I am happy with the state of things. I never pay taxes, but property and sales, and just signed my tax returns and will be getting back $326 so i never did under Bush. He was the snake oil salesman, he didn't even have any regulations in place when he gave out the original bailouts. no questions asked and he gave out $700 billion! He satrted this, Obama is just trying to sort it all out and do it fairly!
I never have rubbed elbows with a politician and somehow I think I'm not missing much. You do give me too much credit though. I get disgruntled at elected officials of my choosing too ( I can't say leaders since the US hasn't had a leader in the White House since, maybe, JFK). I voted for Clinton the first time and regretted after the first month or two. I voted for Bush II the first time and regretted it a few months after 9/11 (mostly due to his "you're either with us or against us" BS as well as his domestic spying and his Patriot Act).
Early on in the primaries I was even leaning towards Obama. Then he showed his true nature, petty lies, lack of leadership, he makes Machiavelli look like a neophyte. It takes more than a pretty face and a glib tongue to get my vote.
Bush was only half the equation in the first bailout bill. It took Congress, a Congress that had a Democratic majority in both houses, to pass the bill before Bush ever had a chance to sign it. So, in a rare display of bipartisanship, the previous administration and congress put us further on this path.
Live and let live, or at least do the least harm? I'm sure future generations will thank us for the amount of harm we haven't done as they pay off this huge debt we're saddling them with.
Those wishing to keep tabs on how Team Obama are raping and pillaging OUR TAX DOLLARS might want to google Glen Greenwald at Salon.com. What a liar and a fraud Obama is turning out to be. Letting Bush go freely about, lying about ending the Iraq occupation, sorry I did not vote for Nader or Cynthia McKinney. Oh well, it was mainly a No Macain vote, I saw through Obama some time ago, but wanted to keep some faith.
Be sure to read Antonia Juhasz's "The Bush Agenda", Amy and David Goodman's 'Static' and 'Exception to the Rulers', and be ready for the Peace Revolution FolkRockCountryJazz Concerts which will be coming into the Whirled, soon as I can get my guitar tuned up....
First, I can see that you think clearly, also that you do your research before making decisions and publishing your viewpoints. Sadly, there is substantial proof that Obama is complicit, or at least passive and enabling, of the biggest theft of taxpayer dollars in History. About two trillion dollars worth, by the time Larry Summers hands out all the money to his Wall Street masters. Of course this started long ago, back in '92, but it's on steroids now. The Elite weren't content just owning most of the wealth. Now they want ALL our working class resource. And as any elitist knows, the easiest population to control is the population that must spend all of its energies just to get by.
Regarding Obama, I really tried to see past his wavering from the most important of his campaign promises, getting out of Iraq and bringing real change with transparency. He has failed in keeping his word on both counts.
Worse, he just swore his allegiance to the Neoconartists who planned and delivered the illegal Iraq invasion and occupation [Nora, how cute you are, believing these global empire wannabes could give a damn about your safety, you are SUCH an adorable child] anyhoo, Obama stunned me by upholding the Bushco Patriot Act shredding of the Constitution.
This act of obediance to the war machine tells me that Barack has either:
1] Been told that if he dares to change the Neocon playbook by actually pulling substantial numbers of troops from Iraq, or in any way disrupts the permanent military presence that will be in Iraq FOR EV ER, that is FOR FRIGGEN EVER, meaning until the oil runs dry AND the war machine finds the next country easier to occupy, be that Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, [Iran being both hard to beat AND unnecessary, as our PERMANENT bases in Afghanistan cover the eastern Mideast well enough] then Obama, if he takes a stand against this Global Empire agenda, would find himself and possibly his family very tragically killed.
or 2], Obama has been told that it is too late to change course, and convinced by the neocon elitists that Sam Sportsection and Sally Shophappy - the U.S. citizenry - has been trained to keep quiet, watch TV, accept the scraps from our Masters' tables, and Obama can either play ball or join the drupelet class. Live like a king or survive like a former middle class tent dweller.
The Neocon Global Pax Americana cabal must be stopped and arrested soon; or we will have missed our chance to become a reasonably free people.
It really is that simple. I highly recommend that folks read Antonia Juhasz' "The Bush Agenda", Amy and David Goodman's "Stati'c and "Exception to the Rulers", Michael Parenti's "Democracy for the Few", and related works; also the recent Jan. 14 2009 John Conyers Judicial Committee 500 page report outlining the Bush Administrration's numerous crimes and subversion of the Constitution, the PNAC website that contains the original plans for preemptive wars, the DOD 'Reports on Strategic Communication" which means propaganda in Pentagonspeak, and numerous other reliable sources, to learn just how much these bastards control our poor, naive whirled.
It is true that a well constructed lie can travel around the whirled and infect millions, before the stalwart Truth even gets its running shoes on.
But eventually the Truth will become more widespread; and everyone knows that the Truth will stand the test of Time, while the lie-plague will pass, leaving its support base naked and pitiable; it will become an embarrassment, a rabid creature without true form, without any soul, whimpering for its masters, who slink off into the shadows trying to hide themselves.
Question is, will there be any of us left, to enjoy that day?
