If these don’t work… Hey – I’m a biologist. What do I know?
First, let’s make a poppy (clickable) link, so when you send your posts thru group mails, folks can just click ‘em, rather than copy-and-paste. I mean, really… what’s more annoying than that? No, don’t send me a list...
OK – here’s a copy-and-paste URL:
http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977614423&nav=MyGather
To make it clickable (color for emphasis only – not required):
1) add this to the front: <a href="
2) add this to the end: ">Article Title</a>
Giving us:
<a href="http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977614423&nav=MyGather">Your Article’s Title</a>
If you do this, voila! You have a clickable link WITH your article’s title as the only thing that shows.
Now, Let’s do Bold, and Italic.
To make a letter, word, sentence… bold, do the following:
1) in front of the item to be ‘bolded,’ put <b>
2) after the item, put </b>
3) Thusly, <b>BOLD</b>
To make a letter, word, sentence… italicized, do the following:
1) in front of the item to be italicized, put <i>
2) after the item, put </i>
3) Thusly, <i>italic</i>
Enjoy

Thanks, Chuck. I hope lots of folks will learn to make clickable links. It is so handy.

Sorry for the generic comment but my box is a bit overloaded so I am trying to catch up.
Make a cheat sheet in notepad, refer to it. And underline too, is and then just what Chuck showed you on the others.
You can also do multiples, such as bold, italics and underlined on the same words/phrases/links, but you need to close each one like Chuck has after you do exactly what he says at the beginning.
It also doesn't matter if you use a capital B or small, they're not case sensitive. Thanks for the tips, Chuck, I hope everyone starts using them, you link worked great :)

The heart? I don't know how to do that one either - anyone?
Would you mind explaining how to access "notepad" while on the internet. I am able to do it if I am in "Word," but not when I'm online. Of course, you probably know that I am able to do it, but I lack the knowledge. It really is true that knowledge is power.
Chuck,
Thank you for the article. I copied it. I've read these instructions so many times and always think that I will use it. This time, I actually made a commitment to having the instructions available when I need them. Another truth: Commitment is a powerful quality.
I will be sending out emails with clickables!
Gather should provide tools to help commenting, just like the "share a post" commands for linking, formatting, showing HTML, etc. This is about the 50th time I've whined about the comment boxes.
People who haven't written code can have a hard time understanding even simple instructions for a programming language, and they shouldn't have to learn this stuff IMHO. Not that it's bad to learn. The problem is that it is intimidating for many.
And hey, some of my best friends are biologists! :)
Couldn't you guys provide some REAL guidance, or allow formatting and/or correcting in the comment boxes?"
Charles Temm No, what got annoying was all the cut 'n paste i had to do to see posts. The BOLD and italic I just threw in for fun.
This comment is to let you know that this content has reached at least ten comments, and as such has been removed from Comment Speedway! Congratulations!
Of couse since the last update, this no longer works in comments. You have to click the HTML button at the bottom of the comment window and insert your clickable link address. :))
