We had spaghetti for dinner, and of course, garlic bread goes well with that. I've noticed over the past couple of years that garlic bread isn't cheap anymore. I used to buy the frozen kind, either individual pieces or loaves, to put in the oven. A lot of the time, it wouldn't all get eaten, and it's not good reheated, so I ended up throwing some away. But now I've found a much cheaper way to make good garlic bread.
Take some bread (I use white because that's what my kids prefer) and pop it in the toaster. Spread it with cheap margarine spread (like Blue Bonnet). Sprinkle with garlic salt (more or less depending on each person's taste).
What I love about this is that I always have these ingredients around. And I can make exactly how much each person wants. I can make it "on demand" as we are eating. My kids really like it too. My daughter ate 4 pieces tonight, and her friend ate 3. No more throwing away garlic bread!
For the Frugal Pantry: perfect meal with things I always have on hand. Spaghetti noodles, sauce, hamburger, bread, butter, garlic salt, and a can of veggies or fruit.

I've done that many a time! I hardly ever buy the frozen already made garlic bread. And you're right, most people already have these items on hand. I also sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top of mine.
That's what I do, too! But instead of putting the bread in the toaster first, I put everything on it then put it under the broiler...
Sounds fun!!!!!
Sounds really good! We are going to have to try this because my kiddos are addicted to garlic bread right now...
That sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to save money
sounds good
I usually use whatever bread I have on hand, and spread it with margarine, and then sprinkle a garlic bread seasoning (I think it's McCormick) on it, and then cook it in the oven for about 5-10 minutes. We put cheese on it sometimes, too.
Good idea! In the future, if you do revert back to the larger pre-made loaves, you can keep from wasting it by drying it in the oven and then making bread crumbs in a food processor or blender. Store them in plastic containers in the freezer and use them when you need breading for fish, veggies or meat. You'll never need to throw away leftovers.
My MIL makes garlic bread on hot dog or hamburger buns.
I love garlic bread with my pasta, but you are right it is ridiculously expensive. I don't think I have bought garlic bread in over a year.
we always make our oqn. but we melt butter or margerine in a pan. add garlie salt , some chopped garlic and brush it on white bread or rolls then put it under the broiler. it is yummy!
I use garlic powder instead of garlic salt.
My mom always did that for us. Imagine my surprise when I had Garlic bread with real french bread!
I have used leftover hot dog and hamburger buns for garlic bread. Butter them and sprinkle w/garlic and cheese; wrap in foil and put in toaster oven or oven at 250 or 300 for about 5 to 10 minutes.
great idea
I always make my own. I keep a sealed container of butter mixed with garlic in the fridge cause my grands like it with soups and salads too.
We have made it this way before as well, but never with garlic salt...just garlic powder~
I love garlic bread. I'll have to remember to do this next time I make pasta.
I do that with leftover bread but I put it in the oven.
When I worked in a cafeteria for a big factory, we would take the leftover toast from breakfast and save it make it into garlic bread for lunch the same way! It's also good if you sprinkle on parmesan and shove it in the toaster or regular oven for 3-4 minutes! YUM.
Yummy. Thanks for sharing
Yup, we've done that many a time :)
My husband and I do this too.
You can even put the butter and garlic salt on the bread and pop it in the oven and make it crispy.
you should try the garlic powder over the garlic salt that stuff is not healthy.
this is funny we had lazanna for dinner tonite and I did the exact same, mu hubby loves butter toast for dinner and this puts a "BAM" on the taste...
I say this only because I want what is best for your children. Margarine is made from hydrogenated oils. These fats are very unhealthy to consume. Please do a little research on margarine and what hydrogenated oils do to human cell growth. Further, garlic salt is salt first, garlic second. If you switch to minced garlic in a (refrigerated) jar or garlic powder, that is a healthier choice. Best of luck to you.

My husband actually bought garlic bread from the grocery store not too long ago from the bread department and it wasn't more than $1.50 or so. We don't have garlic bread that often with spaghetti.
Absolutely. This is so much better than store bought. Thank you for posting this to

You're welcome!
I buy the texas toast garlic bread when its on sale, otherwise we use potato bread and a garlic butter spread that I bought just for this purpose.
i actually prefer garlic bread made this "frugal" way.... that is the only way I can control the garlic!! some pieces get it, some don't - those are for me because I do not like garlic!! comes from being raised as the child of a greek man who thought garlic should be ingested at every meal!! made me despise the smell of it for years
We have made our own on several occassions... We butter the bread, add garlic salt and sometimes cheese ( whatever cheese we have on hand at the time) put it in the overn and bake for about 5 mins. on 350 degrees... I dont like it real hard... Its sooooooooo good and yes, cheaper...
That is agood way to make garlic bread, also if you have a Dollar Tree in your area, that has a frozen food section they often have garlic bread for adollar. It is so much cheaper than the supermarket.
I always have homemade spread in the fridge. I use margarine and mix garlic powder in it to taste. That way I just have to spread it on bread and put in oven or toasteroven. I don't by garlic bread anymore. Thanks for posting to the cooks corner
I sometimes do like Marie W does her, I use the over though
Sounds really good
