Yes, here we are on the 6th and final installment of my Pantry Primer. Herbs are a basic staple in my home and they are so easy to grow and use. Whether you have a garden, window box or just a few potted plants, do not pass up the opportunity to grow your own herbs and reap the flavor they bring to your food, plus all the extra health benefits they offer.
Let us finish up this series with one of my favorites
CILANTRO
Also known as fresh coriander, cilantro leaves and stems pair well with piquant foods, such as in the cuisines of the US Southwest, Latin America, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and in parts of northern Africa. . The leaves of this herb are generally referred to as cilantro and the seeds are known as coriander.
Its main aroma component, decenal, offers antibacterial effects, while cilantro's phytochemicals, including phthalides and terpenoids, provide anticancer properties. Cilantro's blood-sugar-lowering effects may help stave off or manage diabetes. Cilantro is considered an aid to the digestive system. It is an appetite stimulant and aids in the secretion of gastric juices.
Add to guacamole (one of my fav foods) or stir chopped cilantro into plain yogurt for a vegaetable dip.

I hope you have enjoyed this 6 part mini-series on the nutritional benefits of using herbs. Give your cooking-not to mention your family's health-a boost with these 6 culinary herbs.
Also, here is a tip to remember:
To preserve the flavor of fresh herbs in cooked dishes, add them near the end of the cooking time or after cooking is complete.

I enjoyed your Herb series.
A couple of them I have never tried (this is one of them)so now I will.
Thanks Nancy
Wonderful. I just love cilantro and use it often. Wonderful series. Thank you.
I enjoyed this series. I grow cilantro in my herb garden and its always a good producer. Unfortunately hubby isn't fond of cilantro, so I don't to get use it as often as I would like.
Cilantro is also great in a salad. I even like it on potato salad. I've enjoyed your herb series.
I absolutely love cilantro and cook with it often. Unfortunately, as a hypoglycemic, I have to limit my intake of this or I risk my blood sugar going through the floor. You can always tell an authentic salsa in a restaurant because it will be loaded with cilantro. The stuff in jars will have very little.
I have enjoyed all the info. I am going to keep referring back to them and make sure I didn't miss anything. Good job!
I love cilantro, so far I have not tried to grow it yet though.
I didn't know anything about adding fresh herbs near the end of cooking. Thank you for that tip!
thanks :)
I've enjoyed all your spotlights on herbs. I haven't used this particular one before
mmm I love guacamole!!!
I love the smell of cilantro. I think nirvana would be making some sort of shower gel or body splash scented like cilantro! It's like catnip! HA HA!!
Nancy, thanks for the Herbal Education Series, I enjoyed the info!
