I find that now that I am alone, not lonely, but just devoid of family and in-laws, I no longer am required to march to the step of the holidays.
I can use the 'entertaining' season to gather my friends together for certain events, but no longer have to stress out over the traditional mandatory observations. It is very liberating and it hurts no one, and makes the holidays more enjoyable.
Foreinstance, I have not had my Thanksgiving Day yet. I was invited to a few homes, two were washed out due to our rain, a big thing here in Southern California, also it is hard to fry a turkeyin a rainstorm! The other was just too far to bother to drive to. I really enjoyed my day alone.
"nothing to do, no promises to keep.I'm dappled and drowsy and ready for sleep, let the morning time shed all its sunshine on me... feeling groovy!"
I am on my own most of every day, but holidays are special as everyone is so wrapped up with their dinner plans and family responsibilities, I get no phone calls, no postmen, no visitors. It is truely wonderful to me!
So I cleaned a floor that really needed it, due to the 6 birdcages out there and the dogs space.
Today I shall embark on straitening up other parts of the house that will be seen and some that might not, but the point I am making is that, by the time my friends arrive at 6pm on Sunday, I will be relaxed and ready to enjoy my turkey day with those I wish to be around, not those I used to be forced to be around.
The inevitable relatives that bickered all through a meal, or as in my case, small family, just mum and dad and my aunt, but it was always a problem with my dad and my aunt and then my mum would get into it, I would usually just take my plate to my room and eat there, or at later events, just leave and drive around.
I suppose I just hate forced joviality. Holidays to me are just that.
Having to buy gifts just because it is Christmas. Why not just get the gifts that are needed or that suit throughout the year?
This is my Humbug frame of mind due to having my birthday two days after Christmas, or the day after Boxing Day, for the British and Canadian's and other Colonies of the Raj!
To me it always seemed like a forced event. not looked forward to as it upset my regular routine, and as a Capricorn I am all in favour of a loose routine!
So, now that I have alienated some of you holiday mad people, please enjoy yourselves this holiday season, but until about one hour during Xmas Eve, don't expect much of any timely celebrating by me!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Actually it was when people had servants, Upstairs, Downstairs kind of thing. And the tradespeople. They served the aristocracy at Xmas and then the following day was their Xmas, where they would receive their Xmas Boxes (gifts). All very feudal.
I thought this year would be a slim holiday for everyone, but we just came from doing our laundry, and as we passed the Mall, the parking lot was as full as full. Fuller than I have seen it all year. Guess Montana is not hurting all that bad financially.
Rose, I like having turkey leftovers. But Sunday I am having about 20 to diner so that turkey will disappear quickly I think.
Funny, I was driving around today, well, to the store, and thought that these lean times aren't affecting the neighbourhood any either,. Except for a few more For Sale signs in front of big houses, people are buying Porsche's and all that nonsense!
I am glad that you have discovered a way to be at peace by yourself. One of my fears is that should I find myself away from family I am not sure I can find contentment by myself. I hope you enjoy your get together on Sunday.
I had my Thanksgiving last night, after three days of cleaning I worked all day on a 25 lb bird and all the fixin's and had 14 here for sit down! If the other 9 hadn't bailed I don't know where we all would have sat! It was a fun night and I got to bed at 3:30AM!
Just commenting you back, thanking you for a comment you made on one of my Christmas Questions! I always pay back the comments!!!!

Holidays are way too stressful anymore
Years ago, my husband and I decided that we were not going to buy each other gifts any more...for any holiday. I mean birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc. We figured that we get what we need or want throughout the year. Boy, what a relief. No more "Geesh, what should I get him? He has everything he needs."
Holidays are now spent with the kids and grandkids (yeah, we still buy for them) and much more relaxing.
LOL! I wish I could do what you do on the holidays!
It is such a stress reliever!
