I think I ran over Pepé Le Pew of Warner Bros. Looney Tunes fame last night. It could have been Flower of Walt Disney's Bambi fame. Maybe it was only a distant relative. Nonetheless I ran over a stinky skunk last night.
Skunks are one of the hazards of country living and their smell isn't pleasant. I have often wondered why people run over skunks and why they don't just apply the brakes or swerve to miss them. Now I know.
Skunks are fast, very fast. I was only driving about 50 mph, not fast at all where highway driving is concerned. I was on my way home about 10:00 p.m. driving on a deserted county highway and the skunk darted in front of me so fast that I barely had time to react. My natural reflexes kicked in and I slammed on the brakes, to no avail he was like a streak of black and white lightening, there was no way to avoid him, maybe he was suicidal. I don't know why he chose that exact moment to run in front of me and he was running. Country driving can be hazardous.
I ran over a stinky skunk. I'm not happy about it and my car isn't happy about it either.

yikes, i hope your car does not smell too bad... I have had a few squirels do that to me too.. I often wonder the same thing as you are they suicidal???
New headline. "Dead Skunk Left In The Middle Of The Road" .... extra, extra. I don't think anyone is going to run out and move him, not me. I'm mad at him for running in front of me. LOL
LOL! I remember that song! =D
Yeah, they're scent sacks go pop when you do that. Oh well, Lee's Bad. Lol. However, I'd much rather run one over than have them live in my back yard like I had up North. I used to have to watch the dog very carefully until I found the perfect solution. I purchased over the internet "Fox Urine". Works like a charm. They went away and never came back. It's just was the name implies, concentrated in a little droper bottle. You place some drops around your property and they stay away, since a fox is it's natural predator.
One good thing about living in Florida. I know they're here somewhere, but i've never seen one. Used to see them all over when I lived in NY. The smell will stick to you car for a while i'm afraid.
Sorry about your run-in. I wonder about birds though...it seems like they just dive bomb your car on purpose :( I had a run in with a rabbit once, and I almost flipped my car to avoid it and it still ran into my tire
We have a skunk living somewhere nearby. Every once in awhile you can smell it as it walks by.
Annnnd I just love chocolate marshmallow ice cream.
I like chocolate marshmallow ice cream too. Woo Hoo.
We live in a little town within a huge city and we still smell skunks or their odor on a regular basis and you ran over one! YIKES!!
When I lived in Los Angeles, I often traveled on the Golden State Freeway. Every once and again I'd smell that distinctive odor as I drove by Griffith Park, a large multi acre park within the city. One night very late, the same thing happened to me that happened to Lee. The collision of skunk and mustang cobra left skunkatash all over two southbound lanes of the roadway and an odor that stuck to pavement and car for over a week. Ironic that the vehicle was nicknamed 'peppy'.
oh my
Ewwwww! Skunk stink is nasty! How are you going to get it off the car? I knew someone who hit a skunk and the spray somehow got up into her ventilation system! She had to take the car somewhere to have it professionally de-skunked! I road in the car a week after it had happened and it was nauseating! Urk.
I hit one a while back and I'll never do it again. I didn't drive my cars for a week!
Years ago a friend of mine hit one while listening to a certin song. How she can't stand to hear that song at all. LOL
The skunk song. LOL
that's awful for both of flower and pepe and your car
once you hit a skunk it's hard 2 get out the smell
Actually the smell wasn't too bad. I just washed the car the next day and it's okay.
i never smelled one
Wow, wish I could say I never smelled one.
I have never ran over a skunk in all the years I have been driving, Seems like going 50 miles an hour you would have be over it and gone before you got the spray.. They don't smell nice at all. Next door neighbor has a crawl space like, he has a window open. Just inviting a skunk to take and make himself a home under the house. Thanks for sharing
Encountering a skunk is bad, however, there is a cure for the smell. Tomato juice. Not the watered down concentrate but real tomato juice. Not sure why but it gets rid of the smell. My brother met a skunk once face to face and my mom made him bathe with tomato juice and it got rid of the smell. Good luck.
Wow, and I bet your car didn't get into the garage after that either!!
Ooops! Sometimes we just can't avoid the little critters. My hubby says it is really not a good idea to brake or try to avoid the little ones as it could cause you to lose control of your vehicle & serious injury to yourself & passengers in the vehicle. It is disturbing for me when it happens.
You have a wise husband, he is correct. It was a natural reaction to hit the brakes, I wonder just how many wrecks are caused by "natural reactions" setting in. That little critter was fast...LOL
That stinks, Lee. :))
