Tablescapes can be fun, easy, cheap—and can make your holidays one to remember. Here are some simple ideas that can take your holiday table from drab to fab in a matter of minutes—and for little to no cost at all!
Step 1: Create a tablecloth. If you’re like me, you aren’t equipped with an arsenal of tablecloths for every occasion—and certainly nothing that screams Happy Holidays! Here is a great idea to get the look you want for less: Pull out a tablecloth you already own and take it to your local fabric store. (This will make it much easier when trying to decide the amount of fabric you’ll need for your impromptu tablecloth.) Pick an inexpensive fabric that suits your décor and theme, along with some stitch witchery (fabric tape, which can be also be found at most drugstores). Take the material home, iron the edges to create a clean line, and then follow the direction on the stitch witchery to hold your hem in place. This simple touch will personalize your table, and you’ll feel so much better when the red wine spills—just throw the tablecloth away when you’re finished. You’ll simultaneously save money and become the most laid-back host ever!
Step 2: Create a focal point. Perhaps when you think “tablescape,” you think of all of the different details on the table. But the reality is that there is always one piece that draws the eye more than anything else. To that end, why not use that trifle bowl that you never seem to have a use for? Fill it with seasonal fruit, vegetables, and perhaps a little evergreen, creating a natural centerpiece that says, “Winter.”
Step 3: Pay attention to details. An elegantly folded napkin and place card create all the difference in the world when it comes to a tablescape. For ideas on folding napkins, go to www.napkinfolding.net. They have great examples to help you create the perfect fold. Place cards can be just as easy and—with the selection you can get at your local office supply store—they can be done in a snap: Just type each guest’s first name and print! This extra little detail will make everyone feel special at your holiday table.
