Interesting that he's Catholic. I wonder how his religion will pay into it. I know, from working in a Catholic college, that it did it help John Kerry with the religious right. May have, in fact, hurt him because he wasn't "Catholic enough." And many of them are one-issue voters. Kill all the prisoners and foreigners you want, but abortion is a deal breaker.

Obama is going to need some one who has some experience .But Biden has been around Washing D C for as long as McCain .He is all most as old as McCain. So Why hasn't he been more active in keeping us out of the mess we are in now

Fred - I'm not sure Biden being Catholic matters much one way or the other. I was raised Catholic and I've never heard anyone in my family mention anything about a candidate's religion deciding their vote. It certainly isn't high on my decision criteria.

Perhaps more importantly, however, is Biden's blue collar upbringing. While obviously not all Catholics are blue collar, there is quite a bit of overlap between the two demographics. Biden is still considered to have a "working class work ethic" because of his daily commutes out of DC (i.e., he hasn't bought into the whole "I'm a Senator and I'm privileged" deal that most politicians buy into). So if anything he might help more average Americans become comfortable with voting for Obama. Certainly in light of McCain's recent "how many houses" shtick, it will be more difficult to paint Obama as an elitist in comparison. So in this regard Biden may help get more working class voters into the fold.

Having said that, I don't think this particular potential was very high on Obama's criteria list either. I think he was looking for someone with the foreign policy background and integrity to give him honest feedback. Biden will definitely do that for him.

Biden is a wise choice. He adds experience(s) in areas Obama could use help, isn't going to be trying to outshine Obama with an aspiration toward elections 8 years from now, knows the political landscape Obama wants to change (and, though he has been in it for a long time, is not the "consuming insider" others are), and demonstrates that this choice is not pandering to a constituency or "necessary" state. It shows Obama can think outside the "standard" box.

He's certainly not hated by many.... so it's a safe choice, but it sure muddles the 'change' message. I predict the Obama camp, in concert with the MSM will redefine what 'change' means. Watch.

"I predict the Obama camp, in concert with the MSM will redefine what 'change' means."

You just don't get it, do you?

The problem isn't that the Obama camp needs to redefine what "change" means, the problem is that the McCain camp has been unable to understand what "change" means. To this day they seem content to think it means "throw all the old guys out." No, the only "old guy" in question here is John McCain. And no one has suggested that he be "thrown out." On the contrary, we suggest that he remain in the Senate where he can do something of value. But he has no place in the White House.

The White House needs someone with new IDEAS. Change has NEVER been about age, nor number of years in a particular job. Change has ALWAYS been about THINKING.

As John McCain and his camp have consistently shown, they just do not get it. Everything is defined in some infantile yes/no, black/white, good/evil, patriotic/unpatriotic distillation of reality. If your not with us/your against us. If you want change/you must not like people with experience.

They just don't get it. And that's why John McCain is wrong for the White House. Not because of his age or his time in Washington, but because he doesn't think...he doesn't see the future...he doesn't understand the world as it is today.

Fred,

Being a Catholic, I can tell you that most, not all, Catholics try to think things through and vote on something other than the church to which the candidate goes. This means that some are going to vote Democratic and some are going to vote Republican, just like any cross section of the people.

As far as Joe being "good Catholic," I don't believe it is up to you to judge that quality in anyone! Kerry was evidently, from all accounts I've seen, a "good" Catholic, as is Biden.

All in all, I think Biden is the best choice outside of Hillary and I understand Obama's not wanting her at this point.

David K, "just don't get it." Tell me what the "it" is. Obama kept harping on being the "one" on bringing "change" to Washington. Then of course, when Americans weren't buying it, he had to run to an established politico to help boost the experience quotient.

I had to chuckle at your "working class work ethic" statement. I am sure you saw the compound Biden lives on--Mom has a million dollar home of her own on the compound. Yes, I am sure "Joe Sixpack" would identify.

I think the best part of what I saw yesterday, was the wonderful ad showing Biden speaking in glowing terms of John McCain, saying he would be proud to have McCain lead our country. David, you wouldn't argue with your VP candidate now would you?

" will never understand these fools who think America is doing great with the Bush leadership and want no change from his failed policies. Drugs are sooo evil!!!! "

Rude, apparently whatever drugs you are taking must be affecting your memory. The truth is that after the financial devastation of 9/11, it was the Bush economic policies that brought back this country's financial system to the point where 9/11 was a mere hic-up in our economy. We saw the most growth in seven years with the lowest unemployment rate; a record 4.5 percent last February. It is unfortunate that high energy costs have begun to take its toll, a process being encouraged by a democrat congress, to further weaken our economy to help their presidential candidate.

What conservatives don't get is that no matter who he picked, or what he does, he isn't another four years of incompetent conservative policy. The fact is, you all had eight years to prove the wisdom of conservative ideology, and it brought this country, literally, to it's economic, military, and foreign policy knees. The "change" Liberals want, and will stick with Obama for, isn't some promise of some expansive new agenda, it's the sweeping the old, bad one, out of office. Biden is a perfect ten, in that respect, an old war horse, with the needed experience to add a strong broom to the ticket.

Say what? It's not unfortunate, Kay, it's the direct result of Bush (or should I say Cheney and a bunch of oil CEOs) energy policy, combined with his refusal to rein in the speculation his administration unleashed upon us, for his leetle friend Enron president Ken Lay. As for Democrats in congress not buying into the ridiculous drill now charade, if you mean that, well, yeah, and more power to them. Congress not buying into McSame and Newt's lies doesn't bother me in the least.

You can't solve an oil shortage that doesn't exist. That's the most dishonest representation of the problem they could have come up with, and naturally, being who they were, they did. New oil leases won't be drilled on, either. They have tons of areas they already hold rights to, and haven't even explored yet. Know why? Because it's cheaper a nd a lot less trouble to gouge us with imported oil.

I believe there is an energy bill Democrats are pushing. It's the use it or lose it oil lease bill, where the oil companies would either have to drill on the leases they already hold, or forfeit their leases. That should get some oil drilling done, if that's what you're really after, but it isn't, now, is it?

Since there is no oil shortage, once again, this is pretty much huff. Republicans haven't solved any problems, just made a lot of them, for all but the very richest Americans, in my recent (and actually long term) memory, why should we expect things would change now?

McSame's deterioration has become glaringly evident IN this election cycle, and mostly since Joltin' Joe made that statement, as you likely already know.

Kay, how is drilling offshore, that the government's own estimates (Bush Administration) say wouldn't provide a drop for many years, and, incidentally, will provide less oil than keeping our tires properly inflated would save, as Republicans ridiculed without cause, going to help anything right now? McSame, by the way, has missed so many votes he has a lot of nerve trying to say congress should stay in session and "Get to work". When they were at work, he wasn't there, now was he? Does it matter, either, whether the oil comes from offshore drilling, or the thousands of leases big oil already holds? No, not unless you are merely trying to make a false issue out of nothing, which, of course, Republicans are. The public is starting to see through this issue, as well, and I think it's going to backfire, in the long run. Other than the campaign issue side of it, it's just more Republicans in big oil's pocket, helping big oil piggy bank leases for when they figure they can gouge enough out of us to make it worth their while to actually drill somewhere. I'm with Obama on this, approve the leases, they won't be drilling anywhere for a long long time, anyway, lol.

Yes, Kay. They are finally having to admit that Obama's "new-ness" is a more detrimental liability than they had originally thought.

A bit slow on the uptake, if you ask me...

Well Ron, actual drilling will do absolutely nothing for oil supply, you are correct. Passing aggressive off-shore drilling will have a direct and immediate effect on speculators, and thus the price of oil. We need to buy time so that we can get off our oil addiction, not be done in by it.

So do I, but not senility. No way do I want an angry old man that can't control his temper, and can't even remember who we're fighting, to have his finger on the nuclear button, not to mention everything else.

Angry old man Ron? Have you checked out some Old Joe's classic rants and gaffes?

You never answered my question, why would Biden be so supportive of McCain as president this year, if McCain were senile? Takes one to know one Ron?

Well, if, as you say, it will, shouldn't the Republican party be talking to Bush, who can solve the speculation problem by a few words with his appointed regulators, in total, instead? It's a total lie for political purpose, and always has been. Pathetic.

When it's a device being used to gouge the American people, for no real other reason than rampant greed, and it's pulling our economy into the toilet, I think a regulated market is in order.

Next president opposed to next vice president is a slip of mind, I'll grant you, but not of the magnitude of not knowing borders of nations we have vital interests in, that countries no longer exist, numerous times, who we're fighting, apparently anything about a subject he should know loads about, Viagra, or how many houses he owns. That's the extremely short list. I am aware Biden has made gaffs, usually because he can't keep his trap shut, but not, again, of the fundamentally senile old man types that McCain has been showing a plethora of, of late. You know his staff has sharply curtailed McCain's phone privileges, and why, don't you?

I wasn't surprsed by the choice of Sen Biden, but it is a choice. Sen. McCain has had his partys nomination "sewed up " a lot longer than Sen. Obama so why do the talking heads go on and on about how long this decision took Sen Obama? Why aren't they jumping on Sen McCain? Oh that's right the media favors the Democrats. Mule Muffins!

Bill B., I read your comment and almost fell off my chair I was laughing so hard:

"It's quite comical that the messiah...the man who has such a mastry of all the issues, the man who's goign to usher in a new era of positive, uplifting politics, the man who is going to bring fundamental change to washington............picks a crusty old white guy that's been in washington for the past 30 years to help him seal the deal."

"CRUSTY OLD WHITE GUY"??? so you're talking about McCain, right????

Do you have any idea what you are talking about??? Probably not, conservatives lack the irony gene.

The more I read about Biden, the more I am sure he is an excellent pick. Family values? He's got it in spades over the slimy bunch of sexual predators, divorceés, closeted gays who preach virulent macho policies, etc...etc... Foreign Affairs experience, he's got a 20+ congressional history to draw on and the fact that his son is headed off to Iraq says it all - compared to the bush/Cheney team of cowards who are all hat and no cattle, and he lives modestly, in one house and he can find it on a map as opposed to Mr. 10 houses McCain who isn't really sure where he lives and has a problem finding his way "home".

I take it Ron, you hold a dim view of the Senator from Arizona.

I'm not aware of McCain's phone privileges being curtailed, however the Obama folks tried to hustle Biden off quickly without giving access to a microphone. He did manage to let loose this gem: "Barack America" no doubt a play on "Black America"--oh, this will be a fun race!

Kay, you must really love the sight of your own icon. Every few minutes another inane crack. I like Biden's comments, even if they are off-kilter sometimes. They are not nasty or mean spirited, the guy just speaks his mind. if Republicans want to try to make a big deal out of everything he says let them. No one cares, Biden's sincerity and realness shines through just as John McCain's seems blocked, perhaps by arterial plaque.

So to re-cap, the "hope and change" candidate needs an established Washington hack to get elected. What a shame for Biden, he could have used some of this liberal "love" in the primary; I believe he managed just 9,500 votes---as opposed to Hillary's oh, 18 million. Yeah, sometimes you just need an old white guy on the ticket, how bold!

GREAT POINT! Many "republicans" are breathing a heavy sigh of relief with regard to the Biden selection. The rest of us merely chuckle at the "boldness" of the "old white guy" choice. Such a fearless daredevil, that Obama.

Mark-John, my take is that Obama is a typical pol. Nothing new here. His handlers came up with the winning primary theme of "hope and change" that won the contest. If Hillary had originated that same theme, she would be the winner. The dumbing down of America has resulted in glibness and cleverness winning over substance and soundness. And as I have said on many occasions, we will get the government we deserve, sadly.

I hope McCain really tries to get his own unity ticket of McCain and Clinton. Can you imagine how incredible that combo would be? Hope and change, yes I think that phrase would apply. I think McCain could make that sale if he approached Hillary.
