Tense Squirrel moment!!!!!! Rottie and squirrel...nose to nose

Our friendly squirrel was playing with fire this morning!!!

You guys know that this little guy not only waits for me to give him food - he also comes right up to the back sliding door.

He comes up the steps as usual...hopping along ....and he sees me and I give him my usual hand signals - notioning him to hang on!!  I turn and run over to the fridge and get some bread that I save for him. Now usually when I give him food ..I put the dogs in the bathroom and shut the door. I forgot!

I open the sliding door slightly and the rottie Sadie comes running over and there they were....nose to nose! My husband is still home sick and he yells at her to get back..but it was the showdown of the noses....that squirrel wasn't leaving until he got his bread!

Sadie didn't do anything to hurt the little guy and little guy didn't act back....they just met nose to nose. Baxter our pitbull just stayed by my husband looking intently. I finally pushing Sades away and handed the squirrel his bread and off he ran! To be honest....this would have been a great photo op!

Hey maybe we all can live together peacefully! LOL...in reality...I was looking like the only person that was having a heart attack!

I know!!! that was the words I was thinking.....

I think I missed my calling in life at times!! at least my youngest is going into animal sciences.

Dogs are very smart. The dogs MUST have noticed you somehow interacting with the squirrel in a way that let them know he was a somebody.

just watch dog noses getting close to squirrels one bite in the right spot on the nose and the dog will bleed to death. That squirrel knew he could do some damage or he would have ran. Good thing the dog didn't act aggressive smart dog.

Cute! And you're right. It would have been a good photo op. I was thinking more along the lines of a picture of your face that showed the anxiety though. LOL I would have been the same way. Only I'm not sure who I would be more worried about...the dog or the squirrel. I've seen a squirrel take down a rather large cat before so they're not to be dismissed easily. On the other hand, the dog could probably have swallowed him whole as well.

Peter, I do believe they would have stood down. Last year one of the ferral cats got in their pen. Me not knowing..open the door to let them go out and they ran for the cat and cornered him. I yelled and actually pulled the pitbull back ..and they listened! Then my husband came and got the dogs back upstairs. Then I rescued "Peanut" and let that cat know I would never let him get hurt.

And we had a wounded squirrel trapped in our yard last summer. Neither the dogs nor Sage did much of anything but stare at it.

When she was a child, my mother hand-raised a little squirrel... It LOVED to tease her grandfather's hounds who were chained up by running up to one of them, flipping its tail in the dog's face and then running away. The hound would give chase but the squirrel KNEW EXACTLY how long the chain was and would stop just out of reach of the dog when it hit the end of the chain and chatter at him... Like it was teasing him.

Until ONE day when the CHAIN BROKE. I guess it got its little jollies just one too many times! The lesson, as my mother would say, was "don't push your luck".
