As many know, Ashes passed yesterday morning. Last night Gideon asked if we could get a new pet tomorrow (today), well, it seemed a bit sooner than we were intending, in fact we hadn't even discussed getting another pet, though we typically do, as that's what makes Gideon happy.
So, we told him it was too cold today (high of 7 and it's still below 0 out now) and we needed time to clean the cage out as well. Since it was going to be a heat wave this weekend (high of 17 and 18) we agreed to take him then.
We are leery of buying from that store again after what happened to Ashes upon coming home, but we might have to do that since Gideon's not sure what pet he wants. He might want something other than another guinea pig, so we have to let him go where the variety is. That means that store or an hour's drive to PetSmart (stressful on any animal.) The shelter here only carries cats and dogs (Gideon and I are allergic to both, it seems) so that's not a choice.
So, possibly (and likely) tomorrow so that Gideon can be with it before going back to school on Monday, we will have a new friend. Wonder what species it'll be? LOL. Within reason, we are allowing any animal, so long as:
- It's not too big
- It's not too expensive
- It does not require costly things we don't have (IE: heat lamps for reptiles)
- It can fit into a 50 gallon tank
- A 50 gallon tank is a suitable home for it.
That's the only criteria! Other than that, it's Gideon's pick. :)
So, want to take bets on what species he'll pick? (Yes, I'll take photos and post an essay on the choosing process, LOL)

Good luck on chosing a pet. I had gerbils growing up. They were cool but don't play to much. My daughter had a hamster. He was awesome .. she taught him little 'tricks' he used to play with her. My best friend growing up had a rabbit. It was a little floppy ear one. That was a fun little bugger! It was playful...
Hope he is able to find one he is going to love and have loads of fun with!
I know, it's so pathetic to think of 17 as a heat wave, isn't it? LOL
I had bunnies years ago and they are WONDERFUL Pets. BUT... they need a different kind of cage with the mesh flooring rather than a tank that will cause them to sit in urine and get sore hocks. :( Plus they need a lot of cleaning and can be stinky. But I adore, adore, adore bunnies!
Angela, we had a hammy, but he wasn't much that Gideon could hold or pet, sadly.
As for the ferrets, the family that had the two ferrets told me nothing alleviated the odor of the ferrets - bathing included. That was what turned us off from them. Now, we can't afford them since the cages and such are out of the question price wise. We would have had everything for possibly free at that time. There's a lot in Madison way in shelters, too. Adorable little fellas.
Maybe they were mistaken, but I did read online that they always have an odor it's their skin or something that causes it and while bathing reduces it it doesn't remove it. Perhaps I had wrong info.
