Two books, “Catskill Village” and “Great River of the Mountains: The Hudson” offer hundreds of black and white photos of Hudson River History with informative captions and text. Together they represent an historian’s view of life in the Hudson Valley over the last 150 years.
Catskill Village
By Richard Philp. Catskill Village has deep roots in the long human history of the Hudson River Valley, from its native population who greeted Henry Hudson on his voyage upriver in 1609 to its early settlers. Today’s village is located on the commercially advantageous landing on the Hudson River. In 1802, the Susquehanna Turnpike opened the village to the expanding western frontier, and Catskill Village became one of the most prominent commercial ports on the Hudson River. Local trades such as shipbuilding, tanning, farming, brickmaking, fishing, and tourism flourished. By the mid-20th century, the long era of prosperity had faded, only to rise phoenixlike in the past decade with an infusion of young professionals, artists, craftsmen, merchants, and those determined to save and restore the village’s exceptionally rich architectural heritage. The author is both the village historian and the town historian. In CATSKILL VILLAGE he has gathered photographs spanning the years 1860 to the present from his own collection, as well as the collections of other local historians. Paper $21.99 ORDER THIS BOOK
Great River of the Mountains: The Hudson
By Croswell Bowen. Lucey Bowen has performed a splendid service for all who love history, love the Hudson Valley, and love matchless photography - the re-issuing of her father’s 1941 volume. From Summit Waters (Lake Tear of the Clouds) to the Atlantic Ocean, Croswell Bowen sailed the Hudson’s waters chronicling the history of the great river and the life of the people who settled along it. His enlightening text flows like the river through and around page after page of revealing photos, photos that depict the labor, architecture and industry of a bygone era. Roosevelt’s midnight ride into the presidency, Cruger Island’s Mayan ruins, and Natty Bumpo’s cave are just a small part of the flotsam and jetsam of history recounted to whet the appetites of interested readers, or leave others to just turn the page for new images and revelations. I found Bowen’s book to be a thoroughly engrossing springboard into the vast literature of the Hudson River Valley, one I am thrilled to find back in print. Paper $19.95 ORDER THIS BOOK

I'm sorry that I won't be able to make it. I'm having a new stove delivered. ;o)
Thanks Sophie, sorry you can't make it.
Ina - a solution - have them deliver your stove here and you can pick it up when you get your books! Wish you'd thought of that, heh?
It's instead of China, but it will be a great time anyway. (Latest wrinkle, because of the swine flu, the embassy isn't expediting visa applications. So - Even if I'd been accepted I couldn't have gotten a visa in time anyway. this was a smart move)
Then I copied it to my website and Craig's List!
I've featured this in Publishing outside of Gather.
My China contact emailed me last night - the trip is on and I'm invited!
I declined - regretfully - but the news came too late. I'd made other commitments. (shrug)
Thanks for the feature, Aniko! Congratulations are in order.
It will be fun. One of the authors is bringing wine. Why don't you shoot over, Kimberly. It's only a 4 hr drive.
