John McCain Picks Sarah Palin for VP

August 29, 2008 12:18 PM EDT (Updated: August 30, 2008 02:54 PM EDT)

Ah, all kinds of history in this election cycle. Seems that Senator John McCain knew how to steal a little bit of Barack Obama's thunder when he chose a woman to be his VP. Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska is young(44), not a Washington Insider, A staunch pro life, has a child with down's syndrome. She has been a mayor, city councilor, and defeated some incumbents to be Gov of AK.

The way I see this, it will bring some of the women, working class, etc to John McCain. One thing that should be noted is that the McCain camp did a better job of keeping his secret than the Obama camp. The only inkling that Palin was the choice was a private plan from Alaska landing 40 miles from Dayton.

Here's the funny thing, the Obama camp has been taking hits at all the other possible choices, so no one even thought of Sarah Palin. They admit that they were surprised.

Palin was born Feb. 11, 1964, in Idaho, but her parents moved to Alaska shortly after her birth to teach. She received a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

The Palins have five children: Track, 19; Bristol 17; Willow 14; Piper, 7, and Trig, who was born in April with Down syndrome.

And Sarah Palin's dad is younger than McCain. You can add that to the factoid. She was governor of a village of 9000 people and was elected governor when the race for 08 already started!

As far as the Obama camp managing Biden pick. It was top secret until they wanted to leak it during Olympics prime time. This pick was already announced here on Gather before the networks. Check the times of the posts.

McCain is Amazing!! He criticizes Obama for having little experience, then he picks a VP with NO experience.

She was the mayor of a small town and became Governor of a small state just last year.

She does have a lot of experience; however, as runner-up for Miss Alaska and as a TV sportscaster.

Great pick.

I think this was a stroke of genius. McCain has just lit this campaign on fire.
I just watched Sarah Palin on TV. I was very impressed. i can,t wait to learn more about her, but I know:
She is pro life-A+
Lifetime member of the NRA-A+
Former union member, so she understands working class people-A+
I think she will be very good for Americans.

Hmmm, wonder how she got that job? Just kidding. This is going to make it hard for Biden to debate in the VP arena, he will look like he is picking on a girl if he slams her and she will not be expected to know much. Biden will end up talking to the audience in the VP debate. Clever John McCain isn't he?

Private "plane", not private "plan".

I don't think McCain stole anything, not unless you think the image of an eloquent, responsible Obama contrasted with a laughing stock demonstrating yet another lapse in judgment is somehow productive.

I agree, don't think McCain really stole anything, as the people who will applaud this choice were most likely voting for McCain anyway.

Wow, such credentials! Any woman who would vote for McCain now doesn't have a clue seeing that this woman could possibly end up leading the United STates, if anything happens to McCain (if elected). Which is a good possibility. Who could possibly want such an inexperienced person leading this country....I don't care if she has 20 kids.

How actually sexist to think that a woman can't take a debate. If anything they can do it better. Real women know how to get their point across. For all of you who are thinking that because she was mayor of a small town that she should be excluded, how juvenile. She also owned her own business, and to show that she could take on the best man, she was a commercial fisherman. Hmm, don't think that Joe Biden's wife even buys her own fish. "Market, what's that?"

She's purty. What more do we need?

Absurd. Alaska was already a Red State and will remain so but to toss this inexperienced woman onto a ticket (with her corruption investigation after only a year in office) there's little doubt that the intention here is to lose the election.

Oh, and Obama picked Joe Biden because of the warm and fuzzies. Nope, he picked him for his own sake. Funny how he keeps forgetting to mention that Biden has been in office for 35 years compared to 26 years by McCain, so who is the real insider?

Doyle, Get the "corruption" charge right. She went after others for it. But then rumors are how Obama people do stuff., so I will start a rumor about Obama, he is just a power hungry man with the ego the size of the temple he had built for his speech. OH, and don't forget Obama may not do the crimes, but he seems to be friends with all the criminals.

Hysterical. First criticized for not having enough experience and now with Gov. Barbie Doll Whats-her-face on the GOP ticket with less experience than many mayors, it's too much experience. Wow. Olympic caliber flip flopping.

Sheryl O, I was being fair and pitting a woman against another woman, but then I think the same holds true VP to VP. So all have military ties except Obama. All Three have kids in the military. Oh, and as for experience, a Mom holds major cred. Ask any woman who is a mother. They have a skill to negotiate, manage, budget, etc, and wow, she actually raised her kids without a nanny and started a business and ran a town at the same time.

THIS woman can't take a debate on foreign policy when she has never dealt with foreign policy. We are not talking about mayor of New York here. She was mayor of a town of 9000 people. Smaller than a university. She had that job until the race for the white house 08 started.

Please, let's send her to Russia next week. Think about that. Can we send this woman overseas tomorrow? Answer the question honestly!

The only reason McCain has the guts to pick her is because Obama has no experience. As a conservative I like this woman but she is not ready. If you put country first like McCain claims, you don't pick someone who is not ready just because the democrats have a nominee who is not prepared.

At least Obama has had 19 months talking to foreign policy experts and answering the questions. In less than 3 months this woman can be VP with about 2 months preparation.

Let's be honest America. What if something happens to McCain in December? You are talking about a woman who was mayor in small town Alaska less than two years ago.

Cristos, do you recall that McCains mom is still alive (over 92), so long life is in his genes. Ok, so Obama is more experienced because he has TALKED about foreign policy. How absolutely stupid. At least she has a kid in the military, so she will be able to view it from a point that Obama will never know. Heck in fack all of the others have kids going to Iraq. So while Obama may be able to yap about it, they will be living with the results in their own family.

Sandy, If you think that everything I present is inaccurate, don't read it. But maybe you should learn the difference between opinion and news. But then again Obama supporters wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them in the face. You gave him his skatewalk so you wouldn't be thought of as racist, but go ahead and give Gov Palin a hard time for being a woman who even her enemies call impressive. No, Delores, what's absolutely stupid, even ludicrous, is that you would even think of comparing Obama's experience, alongside Joe Biden's, with this woman's. THAT's stupid. And please answer Christos' question - is this woman ready to be sent over to Russia, or Iran, or any country for that matter? Absolutely not. There is absolutely no comparison here.

Ok Christos' & Sheryl O to answer your question. Yes, I would send her because from everything I have read on her this morning, this is not a sheepish woman. She doesn not back down. She has brought down some people in her own party. But, she is a pretty woman, so she must be stupid too. I expect that thinking from some sexist men, but you women take the cake. Don't want to do anything yourself, but are jealous of women who can and do. Oh, and she didn't write her own bio someone else did. But to all the naysayers who put a p*nis over a p**sy, I think you will see that she is from the generation that does not play like she is a damsal in distress. I think it is an insult to women, and Hillary supporters in particular to think that we would vote for any woman regardless of her qualifications of the office she is seeking.

I can lay claim to having been the president of a company, but it would be a gross exageration to say that provided me with the executive experience to run a large company or even medium size company.

Alaska may be one of the largest states in area, but it is one of the smallest in population, Quite frankly there are probably at least a dozen or more cities in the United States that have more complex problems in providing the services its citizens need.

She is either dumb, masculine, or under qualified regardless of the position. Oh and Carol L. Just because you down play your skills does not mean she should. I didn't know much about her until today, but with all I've read, I'm becoming more and more impressed with McCains choice. I'm a woman and I STILL intend to vote for McCain, I don't care how 'clueless' some may think that is. I think she lives a life that reflects MY values. I've seen it said here on Gather today that she wants 'creationism' taught in schools, but said in a manner as if it's insane. Um, excuse me, but if EVOLUTION is but a theory, then why shouldn't the theory of CREATIONISM also be taught. Fair is fair since they are both theories.

Well said Katie. You have to have values to vote values, and far too many people just vote party over nothing. They go straight to attack instead of even finding anything out about the woman. Like you, I had not read much about her until today, but from what I have read, she is not a woman who is easily dismissed, and she fights for what she believes in. If Obama wants change, he has to change the hearts of the people who are void of values and substance. Her story is good and lets you see her strength.

Delores, again, you make no sense. It isn't about proving something to "the other side's" ( note the possessive apostrophe) satisfaction. The other side does not have to be satisfied if the proof is valid. In fact, the other side can hate the proof and it can still be valid.

Katie, you're being ingenuous about the technical meaning of a scientific theory. Creationism would be called a "conjecture" since there isn't a body of research to support it. No, counterexamples to evolutionary theory don't count. I'm talking about positive evidence of divine creation aside from the Bible.

Great Pick!

Happy Birthday Senator McCain you are 72 years old.

You have Melanoma and I am not sure how long you are going to be around.

But what the heck, Palin is cute. She was once named "Miss Congeniality" in a beauty contest and we know you never have been that cute.

How can we object about her foreign policy opinions. She doesn't have any. And you haven't met her but once prior to a week ago.

She is well liked in Alaska.

Reformer. That's great.

But the most important judgment decision Senator McCain needed to make today was to pick a Vice-President ready to take over.

Let's hope if McCain is elected she is a fast learner. No big deal, just putting a soccer mom up for Vice-President as opposed to Senator Biden shows you what kind of judgment Senator McCain exercises.

But hey she's not a celebrity is she?

I think this pick will turn the election- in Obama's favor big time. No experience and McCain go around saying experience is everything.

I think many of you people are going to hear the difference between a senator and a governor for the next 3 months. This is going to reflect badly on Obama if he does not start getting out there and being specific, like an executive.

"Heather, you are one dumb gal."

This is precisely why I no longer care about this election. The minute you criticize either candidate you're "dumb" or an "idiot" and those are just some of the nice terms.

I probably won't vote for McCain. I will never vote for Obama. I have my reasons, and I have listed them on here a while back, for which I was attacked and called every name but a human. There are FAR more important issues than abortion, I hate to burst your bubble. This is the problem with American politics, pick one issue and be damned if we look at anything else. Hating a candidate because of one issue is no better than single issue voting.

Heather, you're not a dumb gal. The world does not turn on the abortion issue, and as far as dumb I think the Democrats have taken a long time to figure out that holding abortion up as a positive is not something to inspire people with even if you believe it should be legal.

And immedialtely the Obamanoids begin to whine about Palin. Say what you want, she has a proven record as a "reformer" while all Obama has is a plan to "change". Change what, we don't know yet. Like the rest of the democrats, who've been in the congressional majority for a while now, and haven't done anything.

Obama hasn't voted on ANY actual bill that created ANY KIND of controversy. He always voted for whatever was politically expedient. Whatever suited his political ambitions, not what was best for his constituients. Typical chicago politician.

No it should be, "McCain is Amazing!! He criticizes Obama for having NO experience, then he picks a VP with little experience."

Some is better than none, and its easy to see she really is an agent for change, because she has a record, no matter how short, to prove it. The record was made prior to being in the mix for President or VP. So it wasnt just for show.

doing the math, her youngest son was conceived quite a while after she became governor. Does that make her a full time mom and a part time governor? I am struggling with that issue. A woman and her husband have the right to have children or not as they see fit, but it seems odd as regards judgement rather than personal rights.

Wow,have any of you actually taken the time to read her bio? She is an interesting well rounded person. She has run a town and a state, more than Obama or Mccain have done. She has fought against pork barrel spending and special interest corruption. And she is in the vp spot, not number 1.Mccain is younger than my father in law who still flies a plane and rides a motorcycle.Younger than my mom who is in great health, smart, well informed and still travels all over.I dont think we need to worry about Mccain dropping dead,he will have access to the best medical care.
She comes from middle class and knows what it is like to worry about the house payment and the grocery bill and raising a large family, more of a "normal" person.

Delores, McCain's pick for VP is the most absurd thing to happen this political season. It explicitedly points up the poor judgment of McCain in ways that Obama would have never been able to articulate in a million years. It will not be long until McCain's next mistep. Janet P. is correct. The race is on now. The American people can plainly see that McCain lacks the judgment to govern the nation and has placed the most inexperienced person within a heartbeat from the helm of power in the strongest nation on the planet. What will Mccain do next to bring separation between himself and Obama? I can't wait to get this contrast out in the open for all to see.

Don b: "Like the rest of the democrats, who've been in the congressional majority for a while now, and haven't done anything."

I'll take this opportunity to edumacate you about what's going on in the Senate...

There's a fairly simple reason why the Democrats have done so little in the Senate. You can see the reason why here: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/226/story/18218.html.

And before you respond with the RIDICULOUS example of the Senate declaring July 2007 NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH, please note: 1) it was initiated by a REPUBLICAN and, 2) EVERY Congress introduces legislation like this whether controlled by Republicans or Democrats, 3) I still think they were idiots for wasting the people's time on this.

Now, can you say it: Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss [R-GA] is an IDIOT for introducing this legislation and wasting the people's time.

There, now don't you feel better, cleaner, and like an American citizen, instead of a partison hack?

Would you like me to say Harry Reid is an IDIOT for allowing this legislation to be introduced and for wasting the people's time and money? I'll do that if you'd like. Just let me know.

You might want to look at Obama's ACTUAL voting record before making any more silly remarks like the above.

Seriously, Don b, if you don't learn how to look stuff like this up on the web before you graduate from high school, I'm going to have a talk with your parents about the quality of your local school system. Do what John McCain has suggested: look it up on factcheck.org, or for the REALLY NASTY STUFF politicians say about each other, try snopes.com.

And don't make me come over there and spank you with a URL detailing John McCain's voting record!

John McCain has said that rumors and claims can be investigated on factcheck.org. Your rumor can, no doubt, be verified there, with snopes.com. John McCain has not suggested this source yet--but I'm sure the Obama campaign will make, sooner or later, a false claim about John McCain, and he will suggest you visit this site to test the claim's truthiness.

Palin and Obama are both inexperienced. She at least has a record as a reformer. As a woman and mother, I will add that anyone that manages 5 kids and a demanding career impresses me. I was horrifed with a Democratic anaylist that called her "eye candy" yesterday and another so-called Democratc strategist on CNN who complemented her "beauty pagent poise" during the press conference. If that is how the Democrats intend to go after her, they are fools. Heaven forbid that people who oppose her are called sexists, in these 2 cases they really are!

Miss Havisham, in case you missed it, Sarah herself used the PTA. I don't think it is a bit sexist to comment on that, since males are also involved in PTA and I would make fun of them just the same if they mentioned that experience when being asked about being chosen to run as VP, ESPECIALLY after saying that they didn't know what the VP even does.

Linda G: "Palin and Obama are both inexperienced."

ANYBODY trying to step into the Presidency is inexperienced. On the other hand, Obama has nearly two years of creating and managing a national campaign. Did I mention that he won that NATIONAL, even INTERNATIONAL, enterprise? Does anyone here have any idea about what it takes to assemble and manage a staff of thousands of people all over the country? Did I mention that Obama has actually done that? Does anyone talking about Obama's so-called inexperience know about the size and complexity of creating, from zero, an Internet enterprise to manage millions of people, their efforts, and the HUNDREDS of millions of dollars in contributions? All this suggests to me that Obama will be ready to staff a government with the several thousands of employees needed to competently run our government. Some talk about Obama as though he were some sort of super-hero who is doing the whole thing by himself. Just like Bush doesn't run our government, Obama hasn't managed his entire campaign by himself. Thousands of dedicated, hard-working, efficient individuals have made the biggest part of his campaign completely invisible--exactly the sort of government that is of interest to me. I want government to work and do its work efficiently. I think Obama, and his staff, have demonstrated they can do that.

Miss Havisham, I was a Hillary Clinton supporter because of her and what I knew of her. Did I agree with all her views? No, but when she was out of the picture, I stepped back and considered my options. With Sarah Palin on the ticket, John McCain is my guy. She represents the change that obama only yaps about, but who then turns around and picks the guy who was is the most inside man he could find. Second, the abortion issue is not the most important issue except for people who don't value life at all. If pro-choice was so dandy then why don't they teach the women ALL their choices instead of the one that ends an innocent life. They don't promote adoption, and actually women should be insulted that that abortion is the biggest issue that Planned Parenthood and other organizations promote. Because women do have choices, but fail to take them all into consideration. I want a woman in office who promotes values, family, then women won't have to even consider an unwanted pregnancy because they will do what is necessary to prevent it.

Linda G. good point about Palin's accomplishments. The other different thing about Palin is that she is being sought out and asked, whereas I have always thought it the height of arrogance for Obama to run for President without even completing one Senate term, not even one. I used to ask myself what the hurry was for Obama, when it hit me that it is not a hurry, it is that a George W. Bush will only be around once, and this is the only time a backlask like this is going to take place ... hopefully. Obama would not be where he was if it was not for Bush to attack and disagree with. He went on for 22 anti-Bush minutes in his acceptance speech before the said anything different than Bush bad and change.

Delores, if you think that Palin represents change, what kind of change is it for the VP to wear a bra? That's about the only change we can count on, but then again, I have always thought the Cheney looks the type to step to the floor of the Senate in women's underwear, and a bra gives him a place to hide his pacemaker.

Richard, you are grasping at straws, Obama did not manage anything, the machinery is set up and rolling for a long time. I have serious questions about Obama's ability to manage anything since his management credentials are all soft hopefuls, like the campaign, and the Harvard Press, and stuff like that. When I have heard him talk about managing things he said he loses papers when his staff hands them to him. It was like he had no idea about this job at all or what management even is except looking pensive and serious while telling people what to do. And as far as judgement, what kind of a guy spends 22 minutes in his acceptance speech, the first part where people are actually listening to what he says, and he does it say change and attack Bush, then at the 22 minute mark he says he will get us off foreign oil in 10 years. To me that does not showcase intelligence. Start with some good ideas, and then wind up playing to the faithful who will still be listening, and rally with an anti-Bush theme.

For anyone trying to assert that Palin has more or equivalent experience:

Not to mention his campaigning for the presidency these past 11 months, Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 from the State of Illinois winning 70% of the vote - in the 109th Congress he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons, promoted greater public accountability in the use of federal funds - he made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa - in the 110th congress he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electrical fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism and care for returned u.s.military personnel - before the U.S. Senate he was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 - there he gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws, sponsoring a law increasing tax credits for low income workers - he negotiated welfare reform and promoted increased subsidies for children, among many other things - before this he had ample grass-roots experience as a community organizer, including developing a church-based community organization of 8 catholic parishes in greater Roseland in Chicago - Crain's Chicago business newspaper named Obama to its 1993 list of "under 40" powers to be - a Harvard law graduate cum laude, teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago law school for 12 years, keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and twice a best selling author.

To say that Palin, suddenly brought into the national limelight yesterday - who asked barely a month ago "what is it exactly that a vice-president does?" has the national and international know-how and expertise to be commander in chief if the situation arose, based on her 'executive' experience as two year governor of Alaska, is frankly, ludicrous.

I'm very curious, she defeated some incumbents for the governors job. Just how many incumbent governors do they have in Alaska? Her selection will not necessarily be significant with anyone except the far right religious group that McCain is desperate to convert to him.

And in selecting her, McCain acknowledged that his lack of experience argument against Obama was a totally spurious argument!

Well, the race goes on and now it can get to the real issues since the experience one has been conceded by McCain!

Yeah. Right. And Dick Cheney is not President. GWB is not the Decider. Nobody in any position of power has any power or ability. Its all done by puppets in outer space with strings coming down to earth. And by the way, that is a LOVELY tinfoil hat you are wearing!

Really, seriously, you have got to be smoking something. The Clinton's have been in control of the Democratic party machinery for some time. Obama is more like the leader of an internal rebellion who managed to bring a lot of people over to his side. He didn't saddle up any horse. He created the posse he rides with--against a lot of odds.
