During our vacation we decided to drive over to a place I have always loved going. As a child my parents would take us over to Assateauge Island to watch the wild horses. There is so much to do there, camping, clamming, biking, swimming etc... but my favorite part was always the horses.
We had not been in a while so we took the kids.
The horses roam the island and you can see them in some strange places. We joked that the mustang needed to work on his parking job.

My husband and Hunter with the horse. The horses do let you get close to them but you are not allowed to touch or feed them.

Here you can see them walking along the shore. They don't care that humans are there.

Hanging out on the beach

A few more horses

I really liked this one

My daughter Brooke and son Hunter posing. My son Spencer didn't want to come down and get his picture taken.

Richard- Yes there are many activities you can to there. They also have the annual swim.
"Annual Pony Swim (started in 1924). Approx. 150 wild horses are rounded up on Assateague the last Wednesday in July. The horses swim across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island where an auction takes place to reduce their numbers on Assateague. After many of the foals are sold, the remaining herd swims back to Assateague a couple days later. These management techniques reduce the impact the horses pose to their natural environment and help provide a sustainable resource for future generations."

5th photo down. Maybe you could blur that out? yikes!
Adelaide - That is cool. Were they expensive? What do you do with the horses?
There use to be a nice area nearby called Oyster Bay, I think it was and we'd rent there few years bak.
Nice pcitures.
We have an Island with wild horses here as well called Shackleford Island, if anyone is visiting the NC coast you might want to check it out.
Moggy - Assateague Island is in Maryland and in Virginia. Where I took the pictures was the Maryland section though.
Very lovely family photos, by the way.
I'm not sure if you know about Misty, a book by Marguerite Henry, but it tells the story of the pony of Assateague. I read it as a child. It was wonderful and when we same island we read about in that beautiful story.
It's a great read for those families who are thinking about going. Your kids will love it~
sorry again, didn't mean for it to come out like that...better shut up now....
As for you other son, teenage boys just don't want mom to take their photo...lol

A bit of trivia for you: I was in OCMD/Assateague when they filmed the movie "VIOLETS ARE BLUE" (1986) with Kevin Kline and Sissey Spacek. The movie features the island ponies as a subplot.
