My Incredible student is my daughter Shannah Tighe! Up to last year at the end of the year she stopped taking medicine for Bipolar disorder and guess what she is fine, better than fine, she is doing great!
Shannah was diagnosed several years ago with Bipolar disorder and had gone through several Doctors and Counselors and medications and the only one the doctors liked was Seroquil. I kept asking the doctors to take her off of it because she was gaining weight so much. The Doctor made a statement that not giving her her medicine would be tantamount to child abuse so I kept giving it to her.
She begged to be taken off it. She started getting pains in her liver. We took her to the hospital and they said it was the Seroquil and to talk to her Psychiatrist. He said "she needs it". Well Shannah asked me if she could stop and I said yes but you have to come off that by downsizing your dose.
So I cut the pills in half then quarters and then off! She was doing amazing real fast! I started cleaning her room one day and I found pill after pill everywhere. I blew up. She said," Ma I couldnt take it anymore after I went to the hospital, it scared me."
So she hadnt taken it in a while and pretty soon she was getting good grades,(from f's and falling asleep in class) to A's B's and C's !!!!!!!
She still has her weight problem and she is working on it. But I am so glad to have her back in the land of the living!
She wants to be a photographer and I hope she gets her dream.
Norene Tighe Proud Mom!

I would not make her take it either, good for you.
There are many other different kinds of medication that can treat bipolar disorder. It makes me suspicious of why they were so insistent on seroquel being the only one she could possible take.
well she had tried several. This is the one the doctor who sees her for 15 minutes every 3 months wanted her on.
You know Beth after thinking about your post I wonder if the Doctors dont have a share in the pharmacuetical companies?
Thanks for your input!
I think that's is a possibility in this case. I wouldn't be surprised if he had stock in the company and was pushing it. It's been known to happen.
I didn't realize seroquel made you gain weight. Hmmm. Its great that she is doing well without the meds, I hope it continues on forever. Better living without the science.
I'm glad she is doing well ;)
I'm glad she is doing so well, just goes to show you that docs don't know it all!
What an incredible student!
Thank you Priscilla and I like all you had to say today in the gather chat with Tom!
I worked with a student in his home about 10 years ago. He was bi-polar and school phobic, so I was sent to work with him.
By the time he was in his late teens, he weaned himself off all medications.
He has a website discussing being a bi-polar teen. You'd have to google it, "Meitar" and "ups and downs".
Just wonderful!
Glad she is doing so well
Thank you Renee!
she's a cutesie, yea those drugs are not good for anyone at all, I would go alternative herbal before I would put those chemicals in my body, I heard it can mess people up worse (the meds)
Seroquil is NOT a good theraputic drug. So many issues with it, the weight gain is uncontrollable. Please let her know how proud her Auntie Donna is of her, and give both the girls my love.
Thank you everyone for all your support! SHe has just put in an application for a plus size model and I hope she gets it. THe prize is 4 $250 gift cards to Torrid.(plus size clothes) one each quarter for a year. Oh My GOd THis would help with teen age clothes!
Thank you Auntie Donna
Good for her! she's beautiful!
Congratulations to her! It is wonderful that she is doing well.
Wow That poor child. I know what it is like to have all those side affects from medication. There are so many to choose from I wonder why they would not just change it. She is an incredible girl.
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you Connie
Oh sweetie! I take Seroquel for insomnia and uncontrolable anxiety. I take 75mg per night, I think, used to be 100mg, but I was able to start cutting it back. I believe it caused my type II diabetes, but I have been able to reverse that. Your poor daughter, this is a very serious drug and personally I think it may have been child abuse (from her doctor) to KEEP her on something that serious. So glad she is able to get off this drug and her life is improving!
I always thought that children were unable to be really well diagnosed for Bi Polar because their brains were still developing. I will have to look more into that. {{{HUGS}} to both of you!

That is so great!
I'm sure you know my history with Seroquel.I actually think I wrote a story about it on here awhile back...Anywho-I REFUSE to be put back on it.A couple of different doctors have suggested it but I said uh-uh,no way jose, not a chance.I feel that way about several different bipolar/anxiety meds(of course,Klonopin being a main one now after what happened with me).I'm very happy with my Depakote,Celexa, and Trazadone.
Hopefully one day,I'll be able to stop taking some of those meds and be only on Depakote for the Bipolar.
Oh crap-forgot to add-Torrid has some awesome clothes.I really hope she gets the cards!
