Thanks for the review ( I dont' want to do it either! LOL), I do, however after reading this, want to read some of this authors' work, which is why I keep paper, or an index card next to me on here, as it's how I make my reading list!

I won a couple of books by Bill Bryson, including WALK IN THE WOODS. I was bored to death by both of them.

I've read Mother Tongue, Thunderbolt Kid and now Walk in the Woods.
I enjoy his "voice". I am sorry you didn't.

I notice my original comment had a typo. "won" should be "own." The other one I own is IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY, which was about, as I recall, hiking in Australia.

Leslie, you delivered on your promise!! I am glad that you agree that this is a fun true story. I think the character of Katz adds so much- the image of a very overweight guy leaving a trail of twinkies down the Appalachian Trail, ha ha ha!

also suggest you read his book "Shakespeare: the world as stage". You would not think that it would be fascinating, but it is.

and I love the scene where they run into a bunch of snotty yuppies at a shelter and katz steals the shoelaces of one of them.

though, yes, that was a really mean thing to do.

Although there are many authors I'd like to know after reading their books, somehow Bryson is not one of them.
But I do LOVE reading about his antics

I loved this book and indeed picked it as one of my "top 50." I guess I could just relate to the two of them wanting to hike the trail and being in no shape to do it, but doing it anyway. I love his honesty (how they snuck off the trail to stay in a hotel and get supplies). I love the story of his pal smoking and then leaving a trail of cigarette pack papers for Bryson to find.

I've given this book as a gift to others, as well, all of whom claimed to enjoy it. I really keep meaning to read more of his books and I even have "In a Sunburnt Country," which a friend passed along to me. Now I want to read the Shakespeare book, after Chris's recommendation!
