author: Bill Bryson
For a while, I've thought I'd like to tackle the Appalachian Trail. I, who do mostly city walking on flat surfaces... I even avoid hills.
UH, NO! Not after reading this book!
It is well written, humorous and since he wrote his own memoir, we know he survived the experience. There's NO WAY I want to do this any more.
The ups and downs, heat and cold, comfort...no not much of that, but lots of discomfort.
I'll be an armchair hiker!
I like this writer a lot - I am going to try to read through his oevre - this is the third book so far.

Armchair hiker? Umm, Yep, me too :)
I enjoy his "voice". I am sorry you didn't.
also suggest you read his book "Shakespeare: the world as stage". You would not think that it would be fascinating, but it is.
though, yes, that was a really mean thing to do.
But I do LOVE reading about his antics
I've given this book as a gift to others, as well, all of whom claimed to enjoy it. I really keep meaning to read more of his books and I even have "In a Sunburnt Country," which a friend passed along to me. Now I want to read the Shakespeare book, after Chris's recommendation!
