I feel like this topic is coming up everywhere. What's going on?
My boyfriend told me recently that he was going to get me a promise ring with the promise to never hurt me.
Now that's a pretty big statement, because its hard to control another's feelings.
I thought I knew what a promise ring was, but now I'm starting to get confused. What are they?
A promise to marry someone?
A promise to stay abstienent and wait for marriage?
A promise to stay loyal to your partner?
If it's for marriage, why not just buy the engagement ring? I mean, people get engaged and don't marry for years. That's a promise isn't it?
If it's a ring to promise to stay pure and not to have sex, isn't that what a purity ring is?
Staying loyal would be the only one to make sense, but I dont really know why anyone would need to buy a ring for that. Isn't that what a reationship is for? Being loyal to that person?
I think it was just created for more sales to be honest. I don't know, maybe I'm being cynical.
What do you think it's for?

I thought a promise ring was something kids did in Junior High or High School since they can't really get engaged. Kind of a "I promise to love you always' kind of thing, but for the younger crowd.
Yea. I had a promise ring with a guy in Jr. High. But it was more of a "I promise to be loyal to you." thing. We never said it was for marriage. Most do though.
A promise ring is what ever you want it to mean.. That was an awwww moment when your boyfriend promised never to hurt you.. Sounds like a keeper..
Hehe. He's pretty great. He's never had a girlfriend, so he messed up a bit in the beginning. He wants to make up for it. I don't need jewelry for it though, just his word.
i didnt even know they sold them as promise rings. i thought that was just a meaning you gave them yourself, oh well. i guess im out of the loop
Haha. Yep. They sell them as that. You can even see on the ads on the right by Google.
Maybe you should discuss it with your bf, especially since the gift is coming from him. You should also explain your concern about the thought behind it as well.
Yea, I have. He knows I'm not one to want materials. But he wants to give me a tangible item that shows his purpose. Something we both can look at and remind ourselves of what we have to keep.
You know that's exactly what reminds me of when I look at my wedding band on a daily basis. I think he just maybe a keeper.
I may not know you, but you seem like that type of guy girls claim only about 0.1% exist. You seem very in love. You enjoy your marriage, and it's obvious by your posts, and even your name. You mean a lot in my eyes. :]
And yes, he is definitely a keeper. He fits into that 0.1% too. :]
That is such a great compliment, thank you, and I'm glad your bf is in that 0.1% as well.
I like that. I'd rather it be something meaningful then a promise to marry them. Leave that for engagements. :P
A promise ring is not like Engagement ring but its just a promise for waiting someone........if he didnt changehis ind then he will comeback and give u engagment ring.
I suppose that's true too. I like that. :]
If he's promising not to hurt you, it shows his heart is in the right place. Its a promise he most likely won't be able to keep though, we all hurt each other, even unintentionally.
Yea. I completely understand. I told him that it's almost impossible to promise that. He said either way he'd try his best. That's all I need to hear. :]
Do they still have promise rings? When I was in HS, kids would buy those..it was to show that the relationship was beyond the "going steady" stage, yet not quite at the get engaged stage.
Congrats on being MOTD in the “Points A Holic” Group!

Yep. Still here. I never knew they were older than a few years. I thought they were pretty new. Apparently not. My mom talked of having them too, and she's 45. I was shocked. :P
