If your dog, or other pet, should happen to tangle with a skunk, I have a sure fire remedy for you.
My mom's Boxer, Zoey, has encounted a skunk not once, but twice, in the last two months. Both times, I have been called in for emergency bathing. My magic potion is cheap, easy to make, and IT WORKS!

Skunk Potion
32 oz 3% hydrogen peroxide (the kind in drugstores)
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp Dawn dishwashing liquid
Make sure your peroxide and baking soda are fresh. Dawn detergent is the only kind I trust, to break up the oils in the skunk spray. Mix all 3 ingredients together in a plastic container. This may foam, that is normal. DO NOT attempt to store any of this mixture, it may explode!
Wet dog completely. Apply potion as you would soap. I use sponges to wash her down with. Scrub her up good, rinse her off, you may shampoo her if you wish.
Viola, no more smell!!!!!!
Keep in mind that a dog is prone to turning it's right side to an assailant. That means you want to pay special attention to the dog's right shoulder area, as that is probably the most heavily hit place. You may want to soak the collar in a bit of this solution as well, or you may just throw the collar out. They are really hard to de-stink.
After de-smelling the dog be sure to wash your hands in Dawn and baking soda or you will now smell of skunk.
I hope you never have to use this, but after using it twice, I knew I had to pass it along to all the animal lovers out there.

What adorable little creatures. Shame they are so smelly. A little fyi....skunks are also cousins to ferrets, otters, badgers, ermines, fishers, mink, wolverines. In the family called Mustlids. They ALL have the capability of spraying you with a funky 'bomb' (that's why ferrets are descented here in the US before you buy them). The skunk if far best the worst of them all.
And that's your National Geographic moment with Lee Ann. lol
Great informantion Lesli. Thank you for sharing.
