I'm just curious, does anyone else feel like they've seen every idiot doctor in their state?? First I have to start by saying that in CT, it is 100% legal for your doctor to deny you medical attention if you owe them money. Which means, if you're on medication that can cause really serious results if you stop taking it cold-turkey, your doctor has the right to not give you a new prescription because you owe him $100. Sounds logical, right?
This has happened to me. I was taking meds, for my heart (I find it necessary to tell you that I'm 26 years old), and my doctor refused to see me over $100. I had 1 week left until my prescription ran out. Talk about trying to find change in other people's couches.
Well, I did end up getting my 'script refilled but let me tell you about the year to follow that. My doctor, of course, had been watching my progress throughout the course of me taking this medication. I have to tell you, on average, when I'm sitting watching TV, my heart rate is 170 bpm. Yeah, it's ridiculously high. And my BP is 92 over 63, on average. So, they put me on this med. to help lower my heart rate (keep in mind, one of the side effects is a drop in blood pressure). Well, my BP can't really go any lower without hospitalization or death. So, I started on a very small dose and every few weeks my doctor raised the milligrams. After about a year of taking it, my heart rate was still around 150. At that point, I was taking enough of this med. for a 250lb MAN!!!!! I was 108lbs. :( So, my doctor doubled my dosage. I felt fine for a little while, until I went to get some food. I wanted Taco Bell so I drove out to get it. Driving through the parking lot, my vision went black. I'm not talking about it getting a little dark or dimming or looking like shadows, I mean BLACK!!!!! The darkest night doesn't even compare. So, it took my body a few seconds to figure out what was going on, but I must have jumped when I realized that I was "blinded" and I jerked the wheel of the car and ran head-on into a fire hydrant. (I know a few of you are chuckling right now and I don't blame you) It is funny now that I look back. How many people can say they own a fire hydrant? That's right, I had to pay for it......all $1300 worth. That's not counting the numerous court visits, doctor visits (4 specialists in all) to get medical clearance to get my license back, and having to pay to get my car out of the impound and paying to renew my license. Oh, right, and car insurance after that, well, there goes my annual salary!!!!
Now, lets think abou this.....108lbs on enough meds. for a 500lb man. Side effects lowering BP with someone who practically walking dead to begin with. I was by myself, in an empty parking lot, with the exception of a fire hydrant. What if I was on the highway????? I could have killed someone!!!!!
Stay tuned......I have many more articles like this one to share.......
