Killing some truths

the last will and testament

A renewal clause, pen's cap opened,

spectacles rest on a document

of life, of seasons, of autumn, of snows.

Autumn twits on; the hidden clauses

fall brown; fall gold; fall red; death can be

aromatic, colored, beautiful.

Ask what he is studying in those papers

and he will smile and sigh. “My last will.”

The last testament of autumn has

the life’s renewal clauses hidden.

killing some truths

A headache digs through my brother's head;

digs a canal down which slips his heart.

It is a useless question to ask

whether he is hurt. I complain

about his food; too much oil to be good.

I complain about little killers

of pain, of soul, of reality, of ….

A dull headache travels down the dale;

an owl hoots and I pick up the phone

as if it is the shrapnel; tell him

what I think I would do if I had

his life, his nights. But it never is mine.

Silence follows for my brother slips

into a forced sleep, where pain is a mare.

Wow, death made to seem so beautiful, like a sleep you slip into, that's how I wish to go when its my time. Some of my favorite poems of all time by famous authors in history including Edgar Allen Poe, who of course was very morbid, and Dylan Thomas are very much about this subject.
Kushal Poddar Oct 11, 2009, 10:07pm EDT
You just named two of my best poets.
Kushal Poddar Oct 11, 2009, 10:08pm EDT

Well, I just read your mind then haha! I could see that in your work for some reason. Isn't it funny how those kinds of things work.

I didn't even notice you had written best, I know what you meant lol. My friend's daughter when she was smaller would say everything that was her favorite was her best. It was really cute. Stuff like that is funny.

Death can be the only thing that brings peace--freedom from pain. It can also be terrible, the stuff of nightmares, leaving those behind that love and miss you.

OK, you two- tomorrow's my MWE day--save some for me! :)

Last Will and Testament......it is looked upon differently by people of different ages. Dawn tells that she needs no last will but love IS the last Testament and because we want our love (testament) to be directed correctly one is needed. One does not have a true knowledge of our numbered days. That is the hidden clause.
Killer of Truths, we worry and suggest and it is all we can do.
I so enjoy all your poetry.

the last will and testament

When one thing ends another phase begins. Preparing our wills ensures the future for those we leave behind.

killing some truths

We may sympathize with the emotions our friends and loved ones are dealing with but we can not make decisions for them nor should we try. We may see mistakes they make and know our path would be different yet we must respect that they have to make their own mistakes and live life the way they deem best for them.

Ku, have you ever noticed how an endorsement by K-E-O increases readership? A lot of people on Gather perceive her (correctly so) to be one of our most knowledgeable friend and asset when it comes to the art of writing. I have noticed over my time here that a compliment by K-E-O is often followed by a rush of other comments.

That's one of my secrets to scoring 12000 points every six months: Keep K-E-O happy and entertained. Awwww now the cat's out of the bag.

The second poem is a truly inspired work. I would have been proud to have written something with such powerful imagery. Lines like "A headache digs through my brother's head" is jarring and fresh. Uniquely your own. "an owl hoots and I pick up the phone/As if it is the shrapnel" is another line that captured my attention. Sometimes the phone has felt like a piece of shrapnel in my hands after a brutal conversation. Each of us brings our own personal connections to evocative imagery like this.

The first poem did not leave such an impact on me, but I admire its sincerity and the insight it takes to observe the beauty of death in a way that isn't morbid, grim, or even disturbed. I appreciate you sharing both poems with us.
Kushal Poddar Oct 12, 2009, 1:38pm EDT

Poem 1: I like the narrator's calm acceptance of the end of the cycle of life.

Poem 2: You've captured perfectly the feeling of watching, helplessly, as someone you love damages themself.

Thank you for posting to The Surreal Circus.

Hmmm... the dictionary says "themself" is not a word!

I love both of these, Poddar. The first one is a beautiful reflection of life. The second one is filled with a despair that I have felt before.

For those in pain, death is a friend who comes to set them free. My mother was one of them.

wonderful work! really made me look at death in a new light...............a forced sleep, where pain is a mare...we often only think of how it effects us not those who have moved on.

Both of these poetic pieces are very good Master Poet Poddar. It is also good to see a real discourse going on. It is wonderful to SEE the Authors (or Poets in your case) of posts responding to the people who take the time to read their content. Very nice to SEE this!

TEN on ALL levels.

Your Friend,
Rene
