My home Town!

I don't know why but statistics have always fascinated me!

I think I would have been happy being an actuary if I hadn't chosen to be a lay-about!

I ran across some population and statistical charts this morning and started listing the biggest cities in the United States and Canada and came up with some interesting figures.

I looked at the actual population of the city proper, the population of the Statistical Market Area and a host of other factors including regional influence and cultural importance.

With all this mixed together we came up with a list of the top cities in North America:

Note, this does not include Mexico, since there is a wall going up there and they don't even speak English!

We can divide the cities into three groups!

First is the "Big Three Mega Cities!" (Of course)

City Population

1. Greater New York/New Jersey 20 million

2. Greater Los Angeles and San Bernadino 20 million

3. Chicagoland 10 million

Then we have the second tier Major Cities, and they are as follows.

4. Toronto/Hamilton/Golden Horseshoe 6.5 million

5. Washington/Baltimore/Arlington 6.0 million

6. San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland 5.5 million

7. Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington 5.5 million

8. Philadelphia/Camden/Wilmington 5 million

9. Boston/Cambridge 5 million

10. Atlanta/Marietta 5 million

Then we get the third tier Big Cities with a regional influence..........!

11. Houston/Baytown 4.8 million
12. Miami/Ft. Lauderdale 4.5 million
13. Detroit/Warren 4.4 million
14. Phoenix/Scottsdale 4.2 million
15. Montreal 4.0 million
16. Greater St. Louis 3.8 million
17. Seattle/Tacoma 3.7 million
18. Minneapolis/St Paul 3.5 million
19. San Diego/Carlsbad 3.2 million
20. Greater Cleveland and Akron 3.0 million
21. Tampa/St. Petersburg 2.7 million

Here is a quick breakdown of where you live!

About 15% of the population lives in the Mega Cities!

About 15% of us live in the Major Cities.

About 15% of us live in the Big cities.

The other 55% of us are out hiding in the bushes!
